Book Synopsis A Systemic Functional Grammar of Chinese Nominal Groups by : Jing Fang
Download or read book A Systemic Functional Grammar of Chinese Nominal Groups written by Jing Fang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the grammar of Chinese nominal groups for the purpose of text analysis, drawing upon Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics (SFL) model. Exploring the metafunctional grammatical resources in nominal groups, the book provides a new perspective on conducting text analysis by focusing on the metafunctions performed by various elements in the nominal group. The observations on nominal groups presented here are based on both a working corpus of 180 texts of various types and a large referential corpus of over 16 billion tokens. With clear descriptions of the terminology used, the book presents a case study at the end of each major chapter, which demonstrates how the grammatical resources discussed can be applied to the delicate analysis of authentic texts. This monograph is more than a grammar book, for it offers a new way to engage with a text microscopically and enables readers to approach and analyse a text by focusing on grammatical units below the clause level. The book provides an accessible and valuable resource for readers who are interested in SFL-based typological description, text analysis, translation studies between English and Chinese, English–Chinese comparative linguistic studies, and Chinese language teaching and learning.

Book Synopsis A New Approach to Teaching Arabic Grammar by : Abdallah Nacereddine
Download or read book A New Approach to Teaching Arabic Grammar written by Abdallah Nacereddine and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abdallah Nacereddine first taught Arabic in the United States before moving to Switzerland, where he led Arabic language courses at the League of Arab States and in conjunction with the Arab-Swiss Chamber of Commerce. He directed his own Institute for Arabic Language Teaching in Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, and Zurich, and taught Arabic at the United Nations in Geneva for over twenty-two years. At present, he is teaching at the International Labour Office. His teaching materials are the result of this experience and have been thoroughly tested in class. One of the first Arabic grammar books was published in the 13th century, under the title al-Alfia (didactic treatise in one thousand lines) by Ibn Malek (600-673 A. H. / 1203-1274 A. D) Since that time, Arabic grammar has not changed at all. In 1636, Thomas Erpenius published his definitive work, Grammatica Arabica, in Latin at Leiden. He followed a methodology which suited the European mind and adopted a specific terminology, which had to be applied by every non Arabic-speaking grammarian. Following this, several Arabic grammar books were published in different languages. Contrary to the grammar of other languages which have continued to evolve, Arabic grammar has remained unchanged. There are already a certain number of Arabic grammar books. What then is the point of publishing yet another? From his childhood, the author studied Arabic grammar, mainly from the al-Alfia treatise. He started to teach it in exactly the same archaic manner that he had learnt it. It was when he began to teach Arabic at the United Nations in Geneva to non-Arabic speakers in a multicultural context that he had to learn a new teaching method and its terminology. He therefore started to follow the European methodology for teaching Arabic grammar and to use its terminology.

Book excerpt: Chinese Medical Chinese is a highly useful work for the student or practitioner of Chinese Medicine who is acquiring the original medical language of their profession. Just as a medical student of Western medicine needs to have a grasp of Latin, it is important that the TCM student has a basic understanding of Chinese. To help with this, Chinese Medical Chinese provides invaluable information to help the student understand how the language fits in to the overall theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. This title assumes that the student has already acquired a knowledge of how Chinese characters are composed, how they are written by hand and how they are pronounced. While the text itself can be navigated entirely in Pinyin, students should know how to use Chinese language dictionaries. The book is presented in two parts. The first describes the basic features of the literary language of Chinese medicne and its relationship to the language of the classical period and to the modern vernacular of northern China (Mandarin). The second part presents the vocabulary and terminology of Chinese Medicine as its component characters. The discussions that are organised in categories that cover Basic Theories, Diseases, Pathomechanisms and Pattern Identification, Principles and Methods of Treatmetn, Chinese Pharmaceutics and Acupuncture. This section has self-testing items to help the reader digest this esoteric information.
Book Synopsis The Language of Ramesses by : Francois Nevue
Download or read book The Language of Ramesses written by Francois Nevue and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: François Neveu’s seminal work, here available in English for the first time, enables the reader to explore the Ramesside age through an understanding of Late Egyptian. This phase corresponds to the language spoken from the 17th to the 24th dynasty, which became a written language – used for private letters, administrative, legal and literary texts, as well as some official inscriptions – during the Amarna period (circa 1364 BC). The first part of the book covers the basics of the grammar and morphology, while the second part is devoted to the syntax, covering first the verbal system and then the nominal forms. In addition there are two appendices, one devoted to interrogative constructions and another to syllabic writing. The book incorporates the most recent work on the subject and the clarity with which Neveu presents linguistic and grammatical points, and the hundreds of examples used to illustrate the grammatical presentation, makes this the ideal tool for anyone interested in learning Late Egyptian grammar in order to read and understand texts from this period. The texts also introduce the reader to the daily life of the Deir el-Medina workers, the social movements that shook the community, the conspiracies at court, the embezzlement of some priests and other prominent community figures, major historical events, as well as the stories and novels studied and read by the society of the time.
