Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of public expenditure has proved to be one of the perennial problems for British Governments. Given forecasts of low growth and record levels of unemployment, the present Government could be faced with dilemmas of greater magnititude than ever. This new edition of Maurice Mullard's book has been carefully revised to provide students with an accessible text. It is principally concerned with explaining the political contexts in which public expenditure decisions have had to be made over the last twenty years. It examines the way in which Governments make choices according to public pressure and the fact that bargains and compromises have to be made in order to maintain political credibility. Maurice Mullard provides examples of the way in which Government policy and individual expenditure programmes have been shaped according to the political climate. The text combines theoretical framworks with policy analysis. This edition contains new chapters on Conservative and Labour politics and a section on John Major's government.

Book Synopsis Countryside Planning by : Andrew Gilg
Download or read book Countryside Planning written by Andrew Gilg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should rural Britain be preserved from urban development, or should people be allowed to live and shop where they want? In the face of continued urban expansion the countryside has become a major issue, its future development uncertain. Countryside Planning addresses these concerns and provides an in-depth study of the rural debate. Beginning with the key concepts and issues, the author sets out the context in which planning operates and how society has constructed its own images of the countryside. Using three theoretical perspectives the book decsribes the evolution of the current planning system and provides a basis for further discussion about the possible future for the countryside. In the wake of the recent Rural White Paper, the book includes the major issues that affect contemporary rural Britain including the current reforms of the CAP, the role of farmers as land managers, and the hypocrisy of sustainable and green tourism. Using boxed policy summaries throughout the text, as well as key question and answer sections in every chapter, the author treats policy and trends across the whole spectrum of countryside planning. Countryside Planning is an in-depth and authoritative analysis of rural policy and makes an important contribution to the countryside planning debate and the future of rural Britain.
Book Synopsis Social Policy Towards 2000 by : Prof Vic George
Download or read book Social Policy Towards 2000 written by Prof Vic George and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments in all advanced industrial societies are involved in an endless struggle of how to 'square the welfare circle', as demand for public services rises due to demographic, social and labour market foctors. Government ability to finance this rising tide of public service demand is constrained by economic and, at times, ideological factors but failure to make welfare provision has adverse electoral consequeces. This is not an issue which is likely to go away. Social Policy Towards 2000 examines the issues and factors affecting the welfare state and by comparing the proposals of the three main UK political parties for the welfare system for the remaining part of the decade, offers a prospective analysis of the future of welfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, policy for inner city regeneration underwent a transformation from a reliance on central and local government activity and the use of public funds, to a much heavier dependence on private sector activities and private investment. In The Enterprise Culture and the Inner City, the authors offer a vigorous and critical investigation of government policy and, in response to the result of the 1992 general election and the implications of the Olympia and York Canary Wharf project, present a credible prediction for the future (or lack of future) of the inner city.

Book excerpt: The technologies of information and communications and their application are becoming central issues for all governments trying to achieve long-run growth and international competitiveness. This country study provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of informatics in economic development and examines Turkey's efforts to develop its capacity in those areas. During the 1980s, Turkey laid the foundation for its transition to an information-based economy by liberalizing finance and investment regulations and by reducing barriers to competition. Tariffs on computer equipment were slashed, and the government embarked on a program of investment in the communications system. Investors responded, particularly in the finance and travel sectors and in select operations of large corporations. But the largest consumer of these technologies is still the Turkish government. And gains in productivity expected from modernization have not yet been widely evident. This study says that the most effective policy to promote an information-based economy is a commitment to open competitive markets. The major factor in that commitment is building up an educated workforce. Although Turkey's performance in this area is better than most developing countries', this report contends it needs to do more to meet its goal of full participation in the new era of informatics. The study contains cross-country comparative data throughout the book and in annexes.
