Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the People of the State of Illinois IT has seemed to the author that the wisdom of the fathers, in separating the functions of government into three departments, and entrusting them to different groups of persons, was not sufficiently appreciated. The changes which are suggested by the discontented of to-day' would practically destroy this' safeguard of our liberties. If this little volume shall assist in impressing upon the youth of our State, not only the excellence of the dis tinction between the Legislative, Executive and Judicial powers, but also the fact that safety lies in keeping them distinct, the object of the writer will be attained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Civil Government of Illinois: With a Brief Outline of the Political History of the State to the Adoption of the Constitution The time evidently is at hand for a forward movement of the educational forces Of this State in the line Of a more formal endeavor to make a good citizen. Hitherto it seems to have been assumed that no distinctive instruction in citizenship was necessary, but that there was a potency in the spelling book and 'the other branches commonly taught which was sufficient, although it is a matter Of everyday Observation that a man may be even highly educated and still a very poor citizen. TO this lack Of familiarity with the spirit and form Of our govern ment can doubtless be traced no small part Of the political indifference Of our day. To win this battle for good citizenship many forces may be called into action, but none are more prominently before the teachers than what may be called the tactics Of good citizen ship namely, Civil Government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our State and Nation, or Civics Made Interesting, Practical and Comprehensible for Children: A Text Book on Civil Government for the Common Schools of Illinois The national government is in Washington District of Columbia, for its Chief officials are there, but its minor officials are scattered all over this, country and over other countries where they are needed. The state government is in Springfield, and minor state officials are scattered over the state where they are needed. The county government is at the county seat, and the town government meets at the Town House. The city government meets at the City Hall. The City or village government is made up of the officials that are elected by the people who live in the village or city. Its laws, called ordinances, are made by these officials, and provide rules for doing what needs to be done in the city or village that is not already taken care of by state laws, such as paving the Streets. Download or read book Federal and State Government written by Donald Littlefield Morrill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federal and State Government: An Elementary Treatise on the Civil Government of the United States and the State of Illinois In the opinion of competent critics, writers of these books have gone to extremes in their efforts to observe the pedagogic precept of commencing instruction upon any subject with those features which are nearest to the pupil. Under this theory, in many text-books the study of civics is commenced with chapters upon domestic and social topics, which have no place in a work devoted to the study of civil government. This book is designed for use by students who are sufficiently advanced to take up the study of United States history. It should be used in the higher grades of the elementary schools, or the first year of the high school, or both, according to the course of study pursued. It is divided into two parts: the first is devoted to a study of the Federal government and political system; the second to the State government and local institutions of Illinois. In the first part of the book, it has been the authors aim to furnish aid to students commencing the study of our national political institutions. Therefore, definite and specific information is given as to the essential features of the Federal system, derived from sources not readily accessible to either teacher or pupil. No attempt has been made to analyze the provisions of the Federal Constitution, or to present controversies as to its construction, but there has been an endeavor to show the actual working of our national government, and to describe the same in a manner which can be comprehended by beginners. The second part of the book is intended as a practical guide to the student upon important matters which are regulated by the local and State government. Book Synopsis Illinois and the Nation by : Oliver R. Trowbridge
Download or read book Illinois and the Nation written by Oliver R. Trowbridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois and the Nation: A Practical Treatise on State and National Civics The State of Illinois expends many millions of dollars annually for educational purposes in order that her schools may prepare their pupils for good citizenship. In these days it 'is not enough that our youths become honest, industrious, and law-abiding citizens. They must be educated in the elementary principles and practical workings of our republican form of government. Igno rance in regard to these matters is far too prevalent among our people. New questions, such as concern the civil service, direct legislation, proportional representa tion, and kindred subjects constantly rise and must be met in a practical way. Unless the people understand the present machinery of our government, they can judge neither of its merits and demerits, nor of those of any proposed alteration. This book was written in the hope of promoting the study of the governments of Illinois and the nation, and of hastening the time when Civil Government, or Civics, should be added to the list of required studies for our common schools. This hope, first expressed by the author in 1887, has been realized in the amendment to our school laws in 1905 making Civics and the History of Illinois common school studies. Book Synopsis The Government Class Book by : Andrew White Young
Download or read book The Government Class Book written by Andrew White Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government Class Book: A Manual of Instruction in the Principles of Constitutional Government and Law; Part I, Principles of Government; Part II, the Government of Illinois The study of the principles of political science is a necessary part of a liberal education. In a country where the people govern themselves the science of gov ermnent is a necessary part of a common-school educa tion. In the United States the people elect their own law-makers and rulers, establish their own constitu: tions, and determine even the fundamental principles upon which men Shall be governed. The danger of entrusting such power to the ignorant has not failed of illustration in our States and cities. Having universal suffrage, the people must learn to govern themselves for the sake of their own preservation and welfare. Nor is a knowledge of the principles of legal science less necessary to every citizen. The laws of man know as little of mercy as the laws of nature, in that law never admits ignorance as an excuse for wrong. It is a proof of the essential justice of our system of juris prudence, 'that so many citizens pass safely through life, totally ignorant of the law, and relying merely upon their own sense of what should be. And yet every day gives proof that ignorance is always dan gercus. The study of such a work as this will not make a youth a lawyer, but it will fix in his mind a system of broad principles, which cannot fail to be useful practically. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Illinois and Her People, Vol. 2 of 6 The new state had started well under Governor Bond. The first session of the Legislature had been diligent in enacting such laws as their needs seemed to require. Courts had been' organized, county officers appointed, and the machinery of civil government was fairly well adjusted. The governor was able to report a healthy financial condition of the state's new treasury department. At the meeting of the second Legislature, which convened in December, 1820, and held over into the year 1821, there were quite a few laws passed and some subjects considered which were taken up at later sessions.
