Book excerpt: We have quickly but methodically and with historical references, discussed The War of AD 70 and its relationship to the Great Tribulation and The Book of Revelation. Jesus spoke specifically about the land of Philistia and even more how Jerusalem and the Jewish temple would be laid barren and made desolate. Jesus also said this would happen to His generation, the generation to which He physically came and spoke. Jesus laid the great tribulation out in specifics. He told His disciples exactly what they should expect, how to know it was time, and when it was over, and Jesus was ruling from heaven. What Jesus told them about the desolation and great tribulation was to be repeated to all known nations as a witness proving when it happened, Jesus, the Son of man, was indeed seated in heaven. As the witness of the apostles and disciples progressed across the known world, the relationship between the Jewish nation and Rome deteriorated. Taxes, oppression, poor governing, the demand of Rome for the Jews to worship Caesar, etc. eventually brought rebellion and war. Jesus told his disciples seven issues would happen prior to the abomination of desolation and destruction of the nation. These are known as the beginning of sorrows: many would say they were the Christ; wars and rumors of wars; famines, pestilences, and earthquakes; the apostles would be arrested, beaten, hated, and killed; false preachers would deceive many; people would hate one another; and the gospel of the kingdom would be preached to the known world as a witness to the fact Jesus said the destruction of Philistia would happen. This would show it was of God and not of Rome. Every one of these seven beginnings of sorrows happened. At the exact time, the Roman armies invaded the land. Three Roman generals methodically took apart Philistia plundering every city exactly as Jesus said it would happen. The city of Jerusalem was sieged for around two years. Jerusalem fell. It was burned, and the Jewish temple of sacrificial worship was destroyed and dismantled exactly as Jesus said it would happen. Nearly 100,000 Jewish people died. Those not killed, were taken into slavery by Rome. No wonder Jesus wept over the nation. To this day, two thousand years later, the temple and Jewish worship system has not been restored and will never be. The war of AD 70 was the Great Tribulation Jesus warned of in Matthew 24:21. It was the end of the age (Mat 24:3). It is what The Book of Revelation is concerned with in Chapters 4-16.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "“I want these talks to be evangelical. That means they are proclamations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” These words are from Fr. Robert Barron’s first Word on Fire broadcast for WGN in Chicago in 2000, which inaugurated over twenty years of regular sermon recordings from one of the leading preachers of the digital age. Today, his weekly Sunday Sermon podcast now reaches over a hundred thousand people every week, and Word on Fire has made Christocentrism the first principle and pillar of its growing movement. Proclaiming the Power of Christ: Classic Sermons is a collection of some of Bishop Robert Barron’s greatest homilies. Exploring both Old and New Testament texts, Bishop Barron brings his characteristic blend of erudition and relatability to a variety of subjects: the mystery of God, Jesus the Christ, life in the Spirit, holy men and women, liturgy and prayer, and faith and culture. From its humble beginnings in Chicago to its worldwide reach to millions today, Word on Fire emerged out of Bishop Barron’s masterful preaching. But that preaching―as these classic sermons demonstrate―emerged out of a mission: to proclaim Christ in the culture and to draw people into his Church."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preached at Enfield, Connecticut on July 8, 1741, this is perhaps the greatest sermon ever preached in America—and is certainly among the most well known. Owing to its forthright dealing with God’s wrath and His intense hatred of sin and the sinner, it is also one of the most controversial. Indeed, for more than three-quarters of the sermon Edwards lays down a relentless stream of the most vivid and horrifying descriptions of the danger facing unregenerate men. While it is difficult to read such graphic language, there is abundant hope in the sermon’s conclusion. Edwards puts it this way, “And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open and stands calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners.” While those who would rather ignore God’s justice in favor of His mercy condemn Edwards and his sermon, those who were present and actually heard him preach that day reacted in a decidedly different manner. According to the diary of Reverend Stephen Williams who attended the sermon, “Before the sermon was done there was a great moaning and crying through the whole House, ‘what shall I do to be saved; oh, I am going to hell, etc.’” The diary goes on to indicate that Edwards had to interrupt his sermon and come down to minister to those who were under such awful conviction. And so, in spite of what the scoffers might think or say, “the amazing and astonishing power of God” was manifested among the people that day—with many falling not into the hands of an angry God, but into the arms of a mighty Savior.

Improbable characters... turn up all over the place: a nursing home resident abandoning her walker to dance the polka... cows listlessly chewing their cuds beneath a Jesus-is-coming sign along the highway. This volume is an attic full of eccentric treasures ready for a rainy day's exploring... Enjoy their humor, their joyful interplay of the biblical and the contemporary, their delightful poetic cadences. Thomas G.
