Book excerpt: The Bible is a book dealing with the history of redemption. Therefore, the first thing we must know from the Bible is the doctrine of salvation. \"... and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation.\" (2 Timothy 3:15) Most people will think that they are well-acquainted with the gospel. But I wonder if that is actually true. Many years ago, the Holy Spirit spoke to Gary Whetstone when he was on a mission trip in Indonesia. While we were in that country, the Spirit of the Lord asked me, “What is your gospel?” I answered, “My gospel proclaims that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died for the world.” Even though my response was not wrong, I sensed that God wanted to communicate to me something beyond what I was currently perceiving. “The good news doesn’t just tell about something,” the Spirit of the Lord said to me. “The good news is something. The good news is the power of God. ... I’ve given you good news, and that good news is the power of God.” This is exactly what Paul also mentions in Romans 1:16. Now imagine that the Holy Spirit had asked you the same question. Would you have responded that the gospel is the power of God (Rom 1:16)? There are very few believers—and even pastors and theologians—who would have answered that the gospel is power. This is because most people have a superficial understanding of the gospel and have not fully pierced through it properly. When I came to deeply understand the gospel, I found that this power pervades throughout the entire gospel. Just as how the blood of Jesus pervades the entire Bible, the power of God pervades the entire gospel. It is crucial to know this, and this is what we will now dive into in more detail.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book excerpt: In a book titled The Holy Warning, the author stated the following words. \"The majority of Christians in this generation do not know what it means to be truly reborn. And there are far too many who claim to be reborn without actually being so. There are too many who still live in sin and the greed of this world yet think that they are born-again Christians. The responsibility for this lies largely on the false preachers. This is the great tragedy of this generation, a great danger.\" I can never forget the first time I preached the contents of this book, The Kingdom of Overcomers. Our church was very small at the time, but I was invited to speak at a rather large church led by the chairman of our presbytery. All those who heard the challenging message I gave were shocked, yet greatly blessed. A few days later, however, I received the following message from the presbytery chairman. “Pastor Byun, you have stolen the hearts of our church members with your one sermon. The members think very highly of you. What you have preached is right. It is the biblical truth. But who would keep coming out to church if you preach like that? Who would be left in our congregations?” I wasS shocked to see that a pastor could be so far from the truth. He was more concerned with how many members would attend his church than with the safety of the people’s souls. Sadly, there are more than a few of these pastors today. \"Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.\" (Matthew 9:36) This is how I honestly feel when I see the Church and Christians of this day and age. That is why I hurried to finish the manuscript for this book just a few hours after finishing another book,Christianity Alone is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.Christianity Alone was written to effectively evangelize to non-believers. This Kingdom of Overcomers, however, was written to awaken the nominal Christians in our churches and lead them to salvation. This current generation has darkened so much that it requires evangelism not only out in the world but also in the church. I thus hope that readers may utilize these two books to lead many souls to salvation. Lord, have mercy on the Church and Christians of this generation! Through this small book, would you awaken the nominal Christians that have become the majority in the Church! Save them Lord! I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise commentary on the Gospels and Acts, excerpted from the Fortress Commentary on the Bible: The New Testament, engages readers in the work of biblical interpretation. Contributors from a rich diversity of perspectives connect historical-critical analysis with sensitivity to current theological, cultural, and interpretive issues. Introductory articles describe the challenges of reading the New Testament in ancient and contemporary contexts, as well as exploring other themes ranging from the Jewish heritage of early Christianity to the legacy of the Apocalyptic. These are followed by the survey “Jesus and the Christian Gospels.” Each chapter (Matthew through Acts) includes an introduction and commentary on the text through the lenses of three critical questions: The Text in Its Ancient Context. What did the text probably mean in its original historical and cultural context? The Text in the Interpretive Tradition. How have centuries of reading and interpreting shaped our understanding of the text? The Text in Contemporary Discussion. What are the unique challenges and interpretive questions that arise for readers and hearers of the text today? The Gospels and Acts introduces fresh perspectives and draws students, as well as preachers and interested readers, into the challenging work of interpretation.

Intended to help preachers prepare sermons the commentary series is essentially biblical and evangelical catholic. This 19th century commentary has served as a standard reference for more than a century. Many early reviewers regarded Schaff's edition with his additional material as superior to the original. It has proven to be a complete and useful Commentary and continues to prove especially valuable to ministers. It contains critical annotations of the text and its translation, and a threefold commentary, exegetical, doctrinal, and homiletical. Under these three heads the text is viewed from every aspect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages the Gospel of Matthew in full awareness of its inherently political character. Weaver situates Matthew's version of the "good news of the kingdom" squarely within the "real world" of first-century Palestine and its occupying power, the Roman Empire. The essays here focus prominently and collectively on the issues of power and violence that not only pervade the historically occupied Jewish community of first-century Palestine, but also are clearly visible throughout Matthew's narrative account. A "lower-level" reading of the Matthean text offers a bleak portrait of the overwhelming power and violence exerted by the Roman occupying authorities and their upper-echelon Jewish collaborators against the wider Jewish community of first-century Palestine. But an "upper-level"/"God's-eye" reading of Matthew's narrative consistently reveals the fundamental irony at the heart of the New Testament as a whole, of the Jesus story broadly conceived, and of Matthew's narrative account in specific. This irony overturns all humanly recognized definitions of "power" and demonstrates the astonishing "politics of God," which defeats evident power through apparent powerlessness and overcomes violence through nonviolent initiatives.

Book excerpt: Romans was written by Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles. As an apostle Paul spent his life traveling the Mediterranean area preaching the gospel and establishing churches. In the course of his missionary career, Paul wrote numerous letters to the churches he had established as a way to pastor them in his absence. Romans is the longest and most complex of Paul’s letters. John E. Toews explores why Paul writes to remind the Roman churches of God’s purpose for both Jew and Gentile and to reconcile Jewish-Christian and Jewish-Gentile church relationships.

But what is the theology behind evangelism? And why is it important for Christians to understand? The Heart of the Gospel offers a systematic theology of evangelism that will ground and inform our practice of spreading the Good News. Each chapter covers a major biblical doctrine, explains its various evangelical interpretations, treats misconceptions that adversely affect evangelism, and offers practical applications of the doctrine. Based on decades of classroom teaching, this comprehensive work is aimed at ministry readers interested in evangelism and outreach.
