Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables: Read in the Light of the Present Day While parables differ from fables, also a very ancient form of speech and instruction, in this, among other things, that fables use the fanciful machinery of beasts and birds and trees, they are allied to proverbs and allegories. They are stories of events that may or may not have happened, but told for the purpose of conveying important truths in a lively and striking manner. They need not be in words, they may be acted; and sometimes men inspired of God, have, in stead of telling, acted them with dramatic power. Go, said the Lord to Jeremiah, and get a potter's earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests; and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee. To his summons they assemble, and the preacher appears - nor book, nor Speech in hand, but an earthen vessel. He addresses them. Pointing across the valley to Jerusalem, with busy thousands in its streets, its massive towers and noble temple glorious and beautiful beneath a southern sky, he says, speaking as an ambassador of God, I will make this city desolate and an hissing: every one that pass eth thereby shall be astonished and hiss I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seven Parables of the Kingdom The thirteenth chapter of the gospel of Matthew 1s not only a very interesting, but also a very important chapter, containing as it does the unfolding of the mysteries of the Kingdom of the heavens: even the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God - Eph. 3: 9. This chapter contains seven parables which according to verse 53 were all delivered by the Savior up on one and the same occasion, and in these seven parables the Lord Jesus clearly sets forth the Truth concerning the establishment and the growth of the Kingdom of the Heavens in this age. In verses 1 3 we see that Jesus leaves the house In which He had been stay ing with His disciples and goes down to the seaside where He spake many things to the multitudes in parables and without a par able spake He not unto them. (v. 34. Then in v. 10 immediately after He had finished the first parable, the disciples asked Him why speakest thou unto them in parables? We. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Parables for Children: Illustrated by Pictures From the Masters and Original Stories These Lessons on the new-testament Parables are prepared in the belief that historic information about the Bible is of little value to young children, but that, at their impressible age, strong moral influ ences are of the very first importance. In the Author's experience with children, pictures and stories have been found to make far deeper impressions on the minds and hearts of little ones than any other means of teaching. This Manual is designed to aid parents and Sunday-school teachers of young children in using a series of cards, which are duplicates of its illustrated pages. Each Parable may serve for two lessons: the first will naturally centre in the picture the second, in the original story. In the first lesson, let the teacher examine the picture thoroughly with the children, even in its minutest details. The text of Scripture and the verse of poetry may be recited by the children separately or in concert. Then let the story of the Parable be told by the children the teacher may lead them on, if necessary, by questions and hints, but Should have them feel that they tell it. The Parable well in the minds of the children, let a talk follow, for which the ques tions in the Manual are intended only as suggestions and helps. These questions have not dealt with the larger, and what may be called national, interpretation of the Parables, but have taken up only a simple and practical one, the larger one not being profitable or even possible to children. At the second lesson, recall briefly the story Of the Parable, especially the truth taught in it. Then, as an illustration of this truth, read or tell the story in the Manual. Encourage the children to talk freely about it, and to tell you how it teaches the same lesson that is taught in the Parable, the verse of poetry, and the text of Scripture. For any satisfactory measure of success in the use of these cards, it is absolutely essential that each child should have to himself a card of the lesson taught, that he may take it home, learn the Scripture text and poetry, and become familiar with the story of the Parable before coming to the class. It is also exceedingly important that he have the card in his hand for constant reference during the entire lesson or les sons. Procure, therefore, as many sets of cards as there are pupils in the class. It is pleasant and profitable to give the child the card for his own when the study of it is finished; but if economy must be considered, the use of the envelope will preserve the cards so that they may be used by several classes in succession. Take up the envelopes at the beginning of the lesson, to be given out again at the close of it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Jesus In the New Testament, the term parable (greek parabole, a placing beside or Opposite, comparison) is likewise used in different senses. Sometimes it stands for type or symbol (ag Heb. Ix. But it is most extensively used to denote a real or fictitious history related more or less in detail, and intended as the vehicle of some moral or religious truth. Sometimes, instead of a history, a similitude in the form of a simple natural phenomenon the budding of the fig-tree, Matt. Xxiv. Or some image from everyday life the man allotting to his servants their various duties before he sets out for another country, Mark xiii. 34) serves the same purpose and receives the name of parable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of Whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Our Lord Explained and Applied The words the kingdom of heaven is like, or similar words, are found at the beginning of a large number of the parables; and if this work were to be read through continuously, it might have been enough to explain, once for all, what those words mean. But as each chapter is meant to be read by itself, and independently of the rest, it has been thought necessary to give a short explanation of these words almost as often as they occur. Occasional repe titions will therefore be noticed, for which allowance is asked on the ground just stated. As a general rule, the parables have been arranged in the order in which they may be believed to have been spoken; not however without exception, when there seemed any good reason for departing from this plan. Indeed, strict accuracy in this respect is not attainable. Nor is it of anv great moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Gospel: An Exegetical and Practical Explanation So said the poet, wisely, of the symbolic teachings of the Gospel; and assuredly nowhere has divine Truth assumed a more win ning air, nowhere worn a more condescending yet conquering guise than in those tales told by a divine Teacher. And yet can it be said that their true and full meaning is easily seized? Have not their details and their general drift alike been from the beginning disputed and misunderstood? Has not human falli bility found herein room to stray and heretical obstinacy means for self-blinding? Nay, has not there hung round the parables from the beginning a peculiar and mysterious dispensation of obscurity? That seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand?1 In them, truly, are set forth the divine lore of the kingdom of Heaven, of God's fatherhood, of the Redemption, of the service of God, of man's duties on earth and destinies hereafter, in the most appealing and vivid form. Yet it is clear that Christ intended many things to be necessary ere all this become, for any one of us, actually the Word of Life. Qui potest capere, capiat. There must be docility of spirit, the beginnings (at least) of Faith, the desire for more light, and humility, - unless ye become as little children, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. There must be, normally, finding and acceptance of the enlightened and authorized ex pounder. To teach men through these means to lead to sal vation by external ministries of grace this is the strangely constant method of Providence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables in Our Saviour: Expounded and Illustrated The parables of our Lord have always had a special attraction for students of the Gospels, and there are probably more works devoted to their exposition than to that of any other portion of the Saviour's teach ings. In adding another to the number, I can claim only such originality as may be fairly accounted for by what astronomers have called the personal equation; and the result may be a further illustration of the many sidedness of these exquisite stories. To Arch bishop Trench, who more than any other English writer has brought Patristic lore to bear upon the illustration of the parables, every later author musc express his peculiar obligations; but the recent works of Professor Bruce and Siegfried Goebel have broken new ground in this department, and my aim has been to turn their fruitful suggestions to good homiletical account. The little volumes of Dr. Bods - only the first of which was in my hands when these discourses were prepared - are full of golden nuggets; and the Expositions Of William Arnot are characterized by the masculine.
