Book excerpt: 'Next level revelatory' Sarah Knight, internationally-bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck What happens when the cure becomes as bad as the disease? Women are pursuing their health like never before. Whether it's juicing, biohacking, clutching crystals, or sipping collagen, today there is something for everyone, as the wellness industry has grown from modest roots into a $4.4 trillion movement, promising health and vitality in the most fashionable package. So why are we suddenly all feeling so unwell? Vividly told and deeply reported, The Gospel of Wellness reveals how this obsession is a direct result of gender inequalities and structural sexism within medicine and society. And while wellness may have sprung from good intentions, we are now relentlessly bombarded with exploitative offerings, questionable ideas, and a mounting pressure to maintain an illusion of control. Balancing the good with the bad, wellness industry journalist Rina Raphael offers a clear-eyed exploration of what wellness can actually offer us, knocking down the false idols that have taken hold and ultimately showing how we might shape a better future for the movement - and for our well-being.

Book excerpt: A sparklingly strange odyssey through the kaleidoscope of America's new spirituality: the cults, practices, high priests and prophets of our supposedly post-religion age. Fifty-five years have passed since the cover of Time magazine proclaimed the death of God and while participation in mainstream religion has indeed plummeted, Americans have never been more spiritually busy. While rejecting traditional worship in unprecedented numbers, today's Americans are embracing a kaleidoscopic panoply of spiritual traditions, rituals, and subcultures -- from astrology and witchcraft to SoulCycle and the alt-right.As the Internet makes it ever-easier to find new "tribes," and consumer capitalism forever threatens to turn spirituality into a lifestyle brand, remarkably modern American religious culture is undergoing a revival comparable with the Great Awakenings of centuries past. Faith is experiencing not a decline but a Renaissance. Disillusioned with organized religion and political establishments alike, more and more Americans are seeking out spiritual paths driven by intuition, not institutions. In Strange Rites, religious scholar and commentator Tara Isabella Burton visits with the techno-utopians of Silicon Valley; Satanists and polyamorous communities, witches from Bushwick, wellness junkies and social justice activists and devotees of Jordan Peterson, proving Americans are not abandoning religion but remixing it. In search of the deep and the real, they are finding meaning, purpose, ritual, and communities in ever-newer, ever-stranger ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of John as a Soul's Journey is a commentary on the Gospel of the Beloved Disciple from a psychological standpoint. It is a continuation of ideas of the Episcopal minister and psychiatrist, John A Sanford, who wrote "Mystical Christianity". This book sees John's Gospel not as history, but as most scholars see it, as a symbolic story. It goes farther from the conventional view, however, in that it sees the sequence of events in the Gospel as a guide for everyone in their journey in life. This commentary goes beyond the concept which John Sanford developed, that the Jews in the Gospel represents the human ego. It also sees Jesus, whose name means, "Savior" not as the historical figure, but as the force in everyone's life which wants to save them to a higher form of existence. William Fairbanks is a retired computer programmer who has taken up writing. He was brought up in the Methodist tradition and was named after a grandfather who was a superintendent of Sunday Schools for many years. His mother was active in her church, teaching Sunday School for many years. He himself wasn't active in religious activities until the age of forty when he had a mystical experience. He was saw in the sky what is known as the Cross of Constantine, as the Emperor Constantine saw the same thing at a decisive time in his life. Since that time he has devoted much time and effort in the study of the Bible and participation in group study. He has written one other book on the Bible "Personal Wellness through the Old Testament".

In So You Want to Sing Gospel, Trineice Robinson-Martin offers the first resource to help individual gospel singers at all levels make the most of their primary instrument—their voice. Robinson-Martin gathers together key information on gospel music history, vocal pedagogy, musical style and performance, and its place in music ministry. So You Want to Sing Gospel covers such vital matters as historical, cultural and spiritual perspectives on the gospel music tradition, training one's voice, understanding the dynamic of sound production, grasping gospel style, and bringing together vocal performance with ministerial imperatives. She also includes in her discussion such matters as voice type, repertoire selection, and gospel sub-genres. Additional chapters by Scott McCoy and Wendy LeBorgne, and Matthew Edwards address universal questions of voice science and pedagogy, vocal health, and audio enhancement technology. The So You Want to Sing series is produced in partnership with the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Like all books in the series, So You Want to Sing Gospel features online supplemental material on the NATS website. Book excerpt: Conspirituality takes a deep dive into the troubling phenomenon of influencers who have curdled New Age spirituality and wellness with the politics of paranoia—peddling vaccine misinformation, tales of child trafficking, and wild conspiracy theories. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a disturbing social media trend emerged: a large number of yoga instructors and alt-health influencers were posting stories about a secretive global cabal bent on controlling the world’s population with a genocidal vaccine. Instagram feeds that had been serving up green smoothie recipes and Mary Oliver poems became firehoses of Fox News links, memes from 4chan, and prophecies of global transformation. Since May 2020, Derek Beres, Matthew Remski and Julian Walker have used their Conspirituality podcast to expose countless facets of the intersection of alt-health practitioners with far-right conspiracy trolls. Now this expansive and revelatory book unpacks the follies, frauds, cons and cults that dominate the New Age and wellness spheres and betray the trust of people who seek genuine relief in this uncertain age. With analytical rigor and irreverent humor, Conspirituality offers an antidote to our times, helping readers recognize wellness grifts, engage with loved ones who've fallen under the influence, and counter lies and distortions with insight and empathy.

True wellness implies more than just being disease-free; it implies dimensions of the social, occupational, spiritual, physical, intellectual, and emotional realms. Every parable, in its own way, reflects some measure of wellness towards experiencing abundant life on earth and in the hereafter. Author Trevor Moorley presents this collection of poems to whet the wellness appetite, along with insightful prose readings that will provide endurance on your wellness journey. Authorities on wellness consider it an active process through which we can become aware of and engage in choices that will accentuate a more successful existence. Wellness in the Parables through Meditative Poems and Prose provides the motivation for this development. From cover to cover, it offers a veritable dialog that will ignite a renewed appreciation for the reason for living. The stimulating, thought-provoking, and sometimes revolutionary approaches unearthed in the parables only serve to inspire us to embrace life with a passion not to glorify self, but to serve others wholeheartedly for the glory of God. The teachings of Christ in the parables are as relevant to twenty-first century folk as they were to the people who heard them in person. Explore the deep revelations contained within them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the phenomenon of ‘digital guru media’ (DGM), the self-styled online influencers, life coaches, experts and entrepreneurs who post on the themes of wellness, health and fitness. It opens up new perspectives on digital leisure and internet celebrity culture, and asks important questions about the social, cultural and psychological implications of our contemporary relationship with digital media. Drawing on cutting-edge social theory, the book explores a wide range of contexts in which DGM intersects with digital leisure, from the health-related learning of young people to the ‘clean eating’ movement, to the online lives of fitness professionals. It asks if digital and social media are problematic per se and explores the problems a turn to the Internet could be revealing about the lack of real-world or analogue support, as well as potential solutions, for our wellness, health and fitness needs and wants. Bringing together innovative, multi-disciplinary perspectives, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in leisure studies, media studies, cultural studies, sociology, or health and society.

Book excerpt: Sensing early that a destiny of immense importance must lie in store for him, Louis Koenig rejects the small and silly life of his so-called peers in a satisfied town in the Rockies, and dedicates himself to bringing out his genius. But his failure to convert seething impulse into art threatens to crush him, and an enigmatic figure arrives with an offer that a desperate Louis cannot refuse. His meteoric rise begins with his production of a book revealing the return of Jesus Christ: a lowlife radical whose voice of new scripture lashes America’s prosperous and powerful in their pursuit of profit and empire. This portrait inspires the formation of a camp of lowlifes around Louis, who proceeds to enjoy the benefits of playing sun to lost planets. When he leads this fan club to a wild and secluded patch of Africa—where the interests behind him can reign freely over his captive audience—a thousand pioneers blaze past the frontiers of human experience into realms foreseen by prophets, poets, and crackpots.
