Book excerpt: From the Preface In commenting on the journey of the children of Israel from Egypt to Canaan, the Apostle Paul said in I Cor 10:11, "All these things happened unto them by way of example and are written for our admonition." Here Paul teaches us that we can learn from this account of the history of Israel in two basic ways: (1) by looking at the example they set, and (2) by examining the fundamental principles and admonitions derived from their experiences. In these studies, we hope to accomplish two things: see their example and discover "the Gospel of the Canaan journey." It has often been said that there is no gospel in the Old Testament. The writer does not agree with this position and believes that there is just as much gospel in the Old Testament as in the New. It is there in type and symbol, in object lessons. The people looked forward to the cross in Old Testament times, but today people look back to the cross. The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed; the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. Beautifully pictured in the Pentateuch is the Gospel of the Canaan Journey. These lessons have been prepared to make available practical material suitable for the pulpit, devotionals, Sunday school lessons, and prayer meeting discussions. The method of chronological development reveals the way the gospel is seen today. By making application, the reader is enabled to apply gospel truth and the saving power of Jesus Christ to his own soul and to those to whom he might minister. Herbert W. Byrne

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Numbers tells a story with two main characters—God and Israel. The way the story is told sounds odd and often harsh to readers today. The main point of the book is nevertheless of immense importance for God’s people in any age: exact obedience to God is crucial. This comprehensive and erudite commentary presents a thorough explication of this significant Hebrew text. Timothy Ashley’s introduction discusses such questions as structure, authorship, and theological themes, and it features an extended bibliography of major works on the book of Numbers. Then, dividing the text of Numbers into five major sections, Ashley elucidates the theological themes of obedience and disobedience, which run throughout. His detailed verse-by-verse comments primarily explain the Hebrew text of Numbers as it stands rather than speculate on how the book came to be in its present form. This second edition includes revisions that reflect Ashley’s decades of experience with the book of Numbers, as well as updates to the footnotes and bibliography, which add many important works published in the last thirty years. With these new features, Ashley’s commentary solidifies its place as the church’s most faithful and definitive reference on the book of Numbers.

This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is so much confusion and deception in the Church today. Just switch on the telly and you will see that Satan has largely succeeded in making a complete circus of the Church. There are so many false gospels, false doctrines, false teachers and false Christians. Even the true Bride has lost its way. Many are truly born again and trying hard to hold on, but they cannot understand why the Holy Spirit has been largely aloof in their lives, even for years. God knows those who are His, the true Bride, the good fish in the dragnet, the wheat, and this book is for them. This book is written for the beleaguered Bride to provide clear direction for her to find her way out of deception and back onto the narrow path that leads to Life. It is, in essence, an extended analogy which follows the trajectory of the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan, to unpack what experiences a Christian should expect as they progress on their own journey to eternal life. This is that journey which can only be made on the narrow path to life which Jesus spoke of, and of which He solemnly warned that few Christians would find. The book projects the Christian life as the protracted journey that it is, not a single life-changing incident somewhere in one’s past. Focusing on areas of deep confusion and deception in the Church, it takes a candid and profound, but practical look at those doctrines which are so fundamental to the Christian life, and which form practical landmark pillars along that journey - salvation, justification, the new birth, sanctification, perfection and glorification. It is the passionate will of Jesus Christ, through this book, to bring to His besieged true Bride, truth and clarity of understanding of these areas, so that she may regain the narrow road and begin to steadily move forward towards the goal of the crown of salvation, that coveted prize of the Christian journey, which the Apostle Paul diligently laboured for, spoke so passionately of and finally attained himself, as we all should and can. This first part of the book takes a very close look at exactly how God works in His children profoundly to transform them and get them into heaven. Laying out very clearly what God’s expectations of us are, it also looks at our part in this work that He does, both in us and through us, with a focus on how to practically overcome our flesh, our first enemy. Mark 6:34 "And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things."

Book excerpt: From Egypt to Canaan examines the fascinating record of the journey of the children of Israel across hundreds of miles of barren desert to reach at last their promised land. This book shows that their journey is our journey too, our Christian lives leading onward from the time of our salvation, "redeemed by the precious blood of Christ", to fulfilment of God's purposes for us in Christ, with many trials and problems on the way. These things "written aforetime were written for our learning", and it is profitable to read about them to learn again of the power and grace of God, the love and sacrifice of our Saviour, and the never-failing resources available for us as we travel through the wilderness of this world.

Book excerpt: The Great Apostasy Considered in the Light of Scriptural and Secular History is a 1909 book by James E. Talmage that summarizes the Great Apostasy, Mormon doctrine, from the viewpoint of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Talmage wrote his book with the intention that it be used as a teaching tool within the LDS Church's Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association and the Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association. The book is "in many ways quite derivative" of B. H. Roberts's 1893 Outlines of Ecclesiastical History. Both writers borrowed heavily from the writings of Protestant scholars who argued that Roman Catholicism had apostatized from true Christianity. Talmage's book has been described as "the most recognizable and noted work on the topic" of Latter-day Saint views of the Great Apostasy.

Book excerpt: What if the key to changing your life--and yourself--is already in your hand? So many women struggle with what to do with their daily lives. They feel trapped in everyday drudgery and disappointment, in dull domestic duties, and in mundane jobs they despise. Where is the abundant, purposeful life they were promised? Kari Patterson shows readers the truth: in each unremarkable life lies an opportunity to see, know, love, and be utterly transformed by a God who meets everyone right where they are. Instead of stepping away from real life to find God, Patterson equips women with a six-step practice to move further in and meet Him in the humdrum moments of everyday existence. And when a woman's inner being is truly changed by the sacred, everything in her world changes too--right down to tackling the dirty dishes. Through entertaining narrative, candid real-life stories, Bible study, and practical instruction, Sacred Mundane guides individuals or small groups to discover the beautiful sacredness in the lives they already lead. Women who long to grow in God and make a real difference in the world--no matter how small--will reach eagerly for this book and the radical transformation it offers. "Our daily routine, with its mundane tasks and mindless repetition, is ultimately an offering of worship to God. What a great truth from a great God!" --Ann Byle, author of The Making of a Christian Bestseller and coauthor of Devotions for the Soul Surfer

Book excerpt: The experience that Israel encountered in their journey from Egyptian bondage to freedom in the Promised Land -- Canaan's Land -- were lessons to help them grow spiritually from the relationship of a Son in Egypt, to the relationship of an Espoused-Bride in the wilderness, to being the LORD Jesus Christ's Spiritual Wife in Canaan's Land. All the stops they made in Egypt, in the wilderness, and in Canaan's Land present types and shadows of the lessons we need to learn in our pilgrim journey from Earth to the Heavenly Canaan's Land -- the New City or New Jerusalem -- which will be the eternal abode of the Bride of Jesus Christ, the Prize at the end of our way. Not many Israelites learned the lessons God had planned for them, so they missed their chance to live in the land of milk and honey. The Lessons in this book will help you to avoid their mistakes.

Book excerpt: Before us lies one of the most intriguing stories ever recorded for mankind-the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, and their journey to the land of Canaan. As we commence this sacred history of Israel, the question naturally arises, why so much attention in the divine writings of this historical event? The answer is simple-it all originated as a result of a covenant that God made with a man called Abraham. God made this promise to Abraham when He called him to leave his family and home in Ur of the Chaldees. It was exactly 430 years later, even in the selfsame day, that the nation of Israel marched out of Egypt to commence their journey to the land of Canaan (Ex. 12:41). Reading the account recorded in the scriptures we will be reminded that God has a plan for His people, and a timetable to fulfill His purposes for the blessing of His people who choose to obey His commands and instructions, by listening to His Word. This story of history is given to encourage all His people to trust a Holy God, who is our Heavenly Father. This book will outline the promises and instructions of the Lord to His people, their times of testing, and their challenge during their years of wandering through the wilderness. It reminds us that we too must rely on the promises of God, as we wander through the wilderness of this present world, waiting for our deliverance that was promised.
