Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theo logy is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theo logian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of' everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'the Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newberry Gospels The material dealing with the third gospel is introduced by a preface to that gospel, in twenty-five lines. The list of chapter titles for Luke, eighty-three in all, follows. Then appears the gospel of Luke, com plete, in 342 sections. Luke is followed by a short introduction of four lines to the gospel of John; the list of chapter titles for John, eighteen in all, is next given; and, after a second introduction of thirty-six lines, the fourth gospel appears, complete, in 232 sections. With this the manuscript seems to have closed, for the dated subscription, unfor tunately undecipherable, scrawled across the foot of this last page, is certainly not by the scribe of the manuscript, and is probably due to a very much later hand. A coarse fly-leaf, added perhaps still later, is covered with characters illegible even under the glass. The whole manuscript is now protected by a handsome red morocco binding, done by F. Bedford, London, not later than 1868. Of the source and history of the manuscript little can be said. It is briefly described in Quaritch's Catalogue of where it is num bered 9630. It was bought soon after by Mr. Henryprobasco, of Cincinnati, and in the catalogue of his collection3 substantially the same description of the little codex is presented. The book came into the possession of the Newberry Library, with much more of Mr. Pro basco's collection, on December 1, 1890, and is now in the museum of the library. In working there on the manuscript the writer has been put under many obligations to the librarians for their courtesy and helpfulness. Since its removal to Chicago, the manuscript has been collated by Mr. Edward A. Guy, his collation, which has not been pub lished, being designed, he informs me, to form a part of a larger work, on which he has long been engaged. A brief notice of the manu script, from the hand of Mr. C. E. Woodruff, of the University of Chicago, appears in the last edition (1896) of Dr. E. C. Mitchell's Critical Handbook of t/ze Greek New Testament (new York), p. 244. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Perhaps, however, we may be permitted to observe that to arrive at proper opinions concerning any doctrine or denomination it is but fair that we reserve our verdict until it is heard in its own behalf. Rendering a decision previous to this would result in deprivation to self of the information sought, and do injustice to the subject considered. We are aware that time is valuable and that the sundry essential labors of life, engaging nearly all the attention, make it necessary that Whatever time there be to spare should be devoted to the most important questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction to the Gospels The chapter on The Relation of the Synoptic Gos pels to One Another is of a somewhat different character from the others. It is intended to be no more than an introduction to the subject with which it deals. To have presented the evidence on this subject with even that degree of fulness and detail with which the chief topics of the other chapters have been presented would have expanded the book beyond the moderate limits within which it was desired to keep it, and would have made it less adapted to the use which it is intended to serve, viz., as an introduction to the gospels for the use of students in college or in the first year of a theological course. It is the hope of the author at a later time to deal more adequately with this important subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Three Gospels: Their Origin and Relations This little book is an attempt to set before the ordinary English reader some of the results of recent study of the First Three Gospels. A few years ago I endeavoured to draw up a brief account of the general social and religious conditions amid which Jesus lived and taught. It was my hope then that se in Palestine might be speedily followed by a short and simple Commentary on the Gospel according to S. Luke. But the preparation of a series of Notes on that Gospel for the use of parents and teachers, l convinced me that no commentary could be really useful or intelligible until the way had been made ready by a previous exposition of the modes of thought and feeling which helped to Shape the Gospel narratives. The following pages are intended to set forth some of these ideas, and describe the growth of the documents in which they were finally embodied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to Christ: And Other Sermons "The Gospel according to Christ," is a good start for a fresh and helpful volume. Daniel Webster, in opening his most celebrated speech in reply to Hayne of South Carolina, January 26, 1830, passed into his argument agaist nullification through this most beautiful opening, viz.: "When the mariner has been tossed for many days in thick weather and on an unknown sea, he naturally avails himself of the first pause in the storm, the earliest glance of the sun, to take his latitude and ascertain how far the elements have driven him from his true course." In this volume we are enabled to imitate this prudence. In the storm and confused utterances of theological and humanitarian controversies and disquisitions that characize our time as an age of many gospels, it is most refreshing to have a glance at the Gospel according to Christ. This glance at the Sun of Righteousness may help us to determine how far we have drifted. One beauty of this book is found in the fact that Mr. Albertson does not keep the apostles forever on trial for perjury, but sends them about doing good everywhere. This is not a volume of apologetics. It is rather a new and gentle reincarnation of New Testament utterances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of St. John: Critical and Explanatory For the present Edition I have re - written and considerably enlarged the Introduction. Within recent years a great number of English and foreign works have appeared On the fourth Gospel, and I have freely made use of them to bring the treat ment of the various questions up to date. To the question of the Johannine authorship of the Gospel I have devoted special attention, both because of the assaults that have been made upon it, and on account of its own intrinsic importance. That importance cannot easily be exaggerated. If a man of the fourth Evangelist' s acknowledged mental calibre really belonged to the chosen Twelve, and thus had an opportunity during a lengthened period of hearing Christ's discourses and witnessing His works, then no amount of destructive criticism can shake the force of his explicit and repeated testimony to Christ's Divinity. Hence it is that, while anxious to be brief, I have devoted considerable space, more, perhaps, than some -might think necessary, to proving by external and internal evidence that the author Of the Gospel is no other than John the Apostle. In section vi. I have tried to establish the Gospel's historical character, and though the treatment of the question does not pretend to be exhaustive, I believe I have shown that, while the arguments for the traditional View are strong and convinc ing, the chief difficulties against it admit of at least a probable explanation. In the Commentary itself, the changes in the present Edition are few, and in no case of any serious importance. In some instances views have been slightly modified, and misprints, wherever noticed, have been corrected. It only remains for me to hope that the friendly reception accorded to its predecessors may be extended also to the present Edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to Mark Hence, in tracing the Gospel history, Mark seems to have viewed his subject mainly in the light of that prophecy of the patriarch Jacob: Judah is a young lion (gen. Xlix. 9) - a pre diction taken up once more by Hosea (xi. 10) and by Amos (i. And swelling into a note of triumph in the last pages of Scripture (rev. V. Accordingly, although the great adversary of that Lion, even Satan himself, goeth about like a roaring lion (1 Pet. V. He is not a lion in the genuine and spiritual sense. The simile applies only allegorically, in reference to his bold appearance in the open persecution of believers; in its higher symbolical meaning, that title belongs to the Lord Himself. In this respect, Peter has well described the agency of Christ (acts x. 38) as healing all that were oppressed of the devil. Mark delineates Christ as, from first to last, pro-eminently the victorious Conqueror of all Satanic powers. He has left us a record of the manifestation of Christ's power, when that great Lion seized upon the ancient world, and of His brief but decisive victory, after which only the ruins of the ancient world are left, which in turn furnish the materials for the new one. This Gospel of the intrinsic power and life of Christ, in its original freshness, as it is reflected in the kindred soul of the Evangelist, possesses a great variety of distinguishing characteristics, both of a negative and positive kind. It is on the ground that it Springs out into record from his own peculiar individual life, that we account for the conciseness of this the briefest of the Gospels, and not primarily on that of the historical occasion for its composition (mark, one of Peter's Evangelists, relating the events of evangelical history by way of explaining his preach ing). We can understand thus, why there is apparent in it no deliberate leisurely contem plation of things and events; why meditation gives place to rapid and picturesque description; why he omits the longer discourses of J csus, and, when he does record any of His discourses, selects those burning words of controversy, denunciation, judgment, or triumph; why, occasion ally, there is an indulgence in hasty, dashing expression (such as not to put on two coats, ch. Vi. And towards the close he even breaks off abruptly and begins again (ch. Xvi. And why the arrangement of his material, though distinct, is so often obscured by the rapid suc cession of the great events described, that Papias suggested that Mark had not written in the order of succession, such as be conceived it to have been (of) raga, Euseb. Iii. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. This is a mistake. I was ordained in 1859, and have ever since remained in the ministry of the Church of England, chiefly in the Bush, in Queensland, and New South Wales. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Old Testament The events of the past six years have served to bring into clearer relief the permanent religious value of much of the Old Testament teaching, and many of the sermons stand in relation to burning questions which were directly raised by the war, and form as it were landmarks of stages in the crisis through which we have passed. These have been allowed to remain as they were written, on the view that their applica tion to the special circumstances of the moment would illustrate the more clearly the abiding moral and spiritual importance of the Old Testament. Their grouping under this aspect may be gathered from the dates which are given in the Table of Contents. As arranged in the book they follow the natural Old Testament order; and it has happened, without special design, that they offer an outline of Old Testament history in relation to religious thought which is fairly continuous for a considerable period.1 Thus the writer hopes that the book may not be without value as a brief introduction to the historical study of Old Testament religion. The writer's thanks are due to the editor of the Interpreter for permission to reprint Sermons V. And VI.
