And the Abbé Loisy's epoch making book, The Gospel and the Church, serve to mark on opposite sides the progress of modern theo logical thought. Both in their similarities and by their contrasts these two books may help an in quirer find his way amid the confusions of new biblical investigations to clearer appreciations of the origins and values Of Christian institutions and be liefs. The two conceptions of Christianity which are presented in these volumes confront each other like separate cliffs; if one takes his stand at the top Of either of them he will find no bridge across to the other; but if he follows the way which runs between them at the bottom, he will be led out to a larger conception of Christianity in which their separation disappears. Fundamentally, the revolt of Hamack from received Protestant dogmatism, and the protest of Loisy against Official Romanism, have, more than at first may appear, a common ground in historical. Indeed, these chapters are essentially the story of the restoration of divine authority and correct organization. With these things restored, it be came necessary toset the world right in its knowl edge of God, and in its conception of the duties of man, and his relationship to the kingdom of God. But these questions concern another phase of the story of the restoration and must be left to a later book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel History and Its Transmission The ten Lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the spring of this year at the Passmore Edwards Settlement in London as the Jowett Lectures for 1906. I repeated them with very little change for my inaugural course at Cambridge as Norrisian Professor of Divinity, so that it seemed advisable to keep them in lecture form when they came to be printed. It is sometimes supposed that the result of modern historical criticism is to diminish the historical value of the Gospels. My own researches have made me believe that there is a much larger element of genuine history in the Canonical Gospels, than a general view of the tendencies which influenced Christendom during the first century and a half of its existence might have led one to anticipate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods in Church Work: The Gospel Renaissance This book is timely. It speaks to an opportunity. An intelligent discussion of the best methods Of church work is one Of the strongest needs of the times. It is Often said that What the Church needs, to secure her purity and progress, is to get back to Christ. There is a truth in this, although it is some times over-stated. We have some inheritance Of mis takes in the theology of the fathers, and it would doubtless advance the Simplicity of theological state ment and conduce to the unity and harmony of the Church, if we would be content to express truth in the divine Simplicity which marked his words. But we have departed from the Simplicity of the early Church quite as much in the principles and methods of church work as in the forms Of theological statement. The simple ways Of apostolic times have very much been lost Sight of in the modern administration of church affairs: Both in the principles of Christian life and in our ways of expressing them, we have gone a long way from the early Church, and without any Sharp sense of our departure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. Today, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Gospel and the New Era The social function of the Christian Church is to bring God more consciously into human relationships with a view to have the Christian life flourish at its best. The reconstruction period has brought an enlarging conception of the kingdom ideal which is leading the modern Church to recast some of its notions and to re adjust its methods, in order to broaden and intensify the personal religious life of the individual and to open up a larger field for social service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World and the Gospel As the months of war have passed, the conviction has grown in my mind that if the missionary move ment is to maintain its place among the many urgent tasks which will claim our attention on the restoration of peace, and to accomplish its work in the new world into which we are being brought, it is necessary for us to go back to first principles and take a fresh hold of the fundamental truths on which the whole undertaking rests. I believe that if we do this we shall find in the missionary idea, truly apprehended and heartily embraced, the liberation and inspiration that we need if we are to succeed in the difficult tasks before us in days to come. To meet the moral and spiritual needs, which in the light of the war are so patent and real, the Church requires a more passionate, exultant, venturesome faith in the Gospel entrusted to it, and the one sure way in which we can learn anew what the Gospel means is boldly to assert its right to rule the whole life of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Taylor Foundation before the Annual Convocation of the Yale School of Religion. These lectures are herewith presented in elaborated form. The Taylor Lectures are expected to deal with some theme in Doctrinal Theology, but the Faculty in their invitation indicated that a discussion of some phase of the social problem would be welcome. I have tried to obey this suggestion and still to remain well within the original purpose of the Foundation by taking as my subject, "A Theology for the Social Gospel." Of my qualifications for this subject I have reason to think modestly, for I am not a doctrinal theologian either by professional training or by personal habits of mind. Professional duty and intellectual liking have made me a teacher of Church History, and the events of my life, interpreted by my religious experiences, have laid the social problems on my mind. On the other hand, it may be that the necessity of approaching systematic theology from the outside may be of real advantage. 'Theology has often received its most fruitful impulses when secular life and movements have set it new problems.' Of the subject itself I have no cause to speak modestly. Its consideration is of the highest importance for the future of theology and religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
