In the East, John or Damascus (t 754) carefully reproduced the teaching of the earlier Greek Fathers: "If we say that the Father is the origin of the Son and greater, we do not indicate that He is before the Son (irportpvutw) in time or nature, nor in any other point, except as being the cause (koto, To amov); that is that the Son was begotten of the Father, and not the Father of the Son, and that the Father is the cause of the Son naturally (alnos tpvcrucuii), as we say that the fire does not come from the light, but rather the light from the fire. When, therefore, we hear that the Father is the origin of and greater than the Son, we must understand it in regard of the cause (t3 airiu) voiJo-tDfiev)" (De Fide, i. 8). The summary of opinions given by Photius (t c. 891) may complete this review of ancient interpretations. "Our fathers," he writes, "have variously understood the phrase of the Gospel, My Father is greater tfian J, without injury to the truth.
