Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Lion of Granpere And indeed an observant traveller will be led to think that a great deal of what may most truly be called civilisation has found its way in among the Ballons, whether it travelled thither by the new fangled railways and im perial routes, or found its passage along the valley streams before imperial favours had been showered upon the district. We are told that when Pastor Oberlin was appointed to his cure as Protestant clergyman in the Ban de la Roche a little more than one hundred years ago, that was, in 1767, - this region was densely dark and far behind in the world's running as regards all progress. The people were ignor ant, poor, half-starved, almost savage, destitute. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: The Golden Lion of Granpere Anthony Trollope Set in a village in the Vosges mountains in north-eastern France, The Golden Lion of Granpere (1867) was written when Trollope was at the height of his popularity. The novel concerns the events in the lives of an innkeeper's family; the relationship between George Voss, the landlord's son, and his beloved Marie, the rivalry between Voss and another suitor for Marie's hand in marriage, and the results of a betrothal based on mutual misunderstandings. A small-scale work, precise and detailed, it demonstrated a skill and level of social analysis peculiarly Trollope's own. This is a romance devoid of political dimension, yet acutely attentive to what a contemporary critic called 'the characteristic dress in which the small diplomacies of all kinds of social life clothe themselves'. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. I'm coming to live with you for a little time. I have read about you and your friends over there. It is a hazard of new fortunes with me, your Majesty, so be kind to me, and if I win, I will put a new coat of paint on your shield and gild you all over again. Prentiss smiled obsequiously at the American's pleasantry, but the new lodger only stared at him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
