'The Golden Calf' is one of Braddon's novels in the sensation literature genre. Mary Elizabeth Braddon was born in Soho, London, England in 1835. She was educated privately in England and France, and at the age of just nineteen was offered a commission by a local printer to produce a serial novel "combining the humour of Dickens with the plot and construction of G. P. R. Reynolds" What emerged was Three Times dead, or The Secret of the Heath, which was published five years later under the title The Trail of the Serpent (1861). For the rest of her life, Braddon was an extremely prolific writer, producing more than eighty novels, while also finding time to write and act in a number of stage plays.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Calf, Vol. 1 of 3: Or, Prodigality and Speculation in the Nineteenth Century On the seventh of last month (September, 1849) a leading article appeared in the Times journal, recommending a work to be written, which was to be "of eminent advantage to the public," and for which "a very rapid sale" was predicted. The writer went on to say - "we would take any young author in hand who is burning with a noble thirst for literary distinction, and give him the plan of a work, which, if well executed, would carry his name into every gentleman's library and every merchant's counting-house in the three kingdoms. The subject should be 'Railway Frauds.'" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing on in the final book on his mammoth work on theology, Hodge finishes his thoughts on the work of Christ, Salvation and the Holy Spirit. He lines out the thinking and fallacies of many evangelical and Roman Catholic schools of thought while clearly explaining the Reformed way of thinking. He concludes this tome with the Calvinist teachings on the final days of both the earth and humanity when they die. Again laying bold arguments for the Reformed way of thinking, Hodge is able to articulate clearly and Biblically this way of theological thought while giving credence to the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Philosophy of Forgiveness, Volume III: Forgiveness in World Religions' is a collection of essays that explores the philosophy of forgiveness in different religions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Each chapter scours one of these religions for insights on the concept of forgiveness, asking questions such as whether forgiveness is a virtue, whether it is conditional, whether God has standing to forgive, and whether it is permissible not to forgive some extreme wrongs. In some of the chapters, the concept of forgiveness in one religion is compared with that in another. In other chapters, the ideas of different traditions within a religion are compared and contrasted. Also, some chapters compare a religious concept to the views of a philosophical figure, such as Aristotle, Kant, or Derrida. The contributors to the volume come from various cultural and religious backgrounds and from different disciplines, such as philosophy, religious studies, and psychology. The collection is written for scholars, graduate students, and upper-division undergraduate students interested in forgiveness or comparative religious philosophy.
