Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coralee Harper struggles for justice for her dead brother and her own sanity in Depression-era rural Arkansas. In 1926 in rural Green County, Arkansas, where cotton and poverty reign, young Coralee Harper hopes for a family and a place in her community, but when her brother Buddy is killed by a powerful sheriff, she can't recover from his death or the injustice of his loss. When she begins to spot her dead brother around town, she wonders--is she clairvoyant, mistaken, or is she losing her mind? What Coralee can't fathom is that there are forces at work that threaten her and the very fabric of the town: Leroy Harrison, a newly minted, ambitious lawyer who makes a horrible mistake, landing him a judgeship and a guilty conscience for life; an evangelical preacher and his flock of snake-handling parishioners; the women of the town who, along with Coralee's own mother, make up their own kind of jury for Coralee's behavior; Sheriff Wiley Slocum who rules the entire field, harboring dark secrets of his own; and finally, Coralee's husband Earl, who tries to balance his work at the cotton gin with his fight for family and Coralee's life. When Coralee ends up in a sanity hearing before Judge Leroy Harrison, the judge must decide both Coralee's fate and his own. The chain of events following his decision draws him more deeply into the sheriff's far-reaching sphere of influence, and reveals the destructive nature of power, even--and especially--his own.

Book excerpt: This scripture was revealed through spirit writing in 1181. It traces Wenchang's development through his many transformations culminating in his apotheosis as director of the Wenchang Palace and custodian of the Cinnamon Record that determines men's and women's fates. The god has since assumed a high position in the Taoist pantheon, has been introduced into the school system and Confucian temples, and now controls the all-important civil service examinations in China. The text translated here provides a unique window into the religious world of Traditional China. Numerous anecdotes of good- and evil-doers reveal the ethical dilemmas facing men and women of the time, from social questions like infanticide and discrimination against women to more purely religious issues such as how evil gods are punished and how China's divergent religious traditions can be reconciled.

The result of which is my book The Green Leaves of Winter a collection of short stories and poems. The stories and poems are mostly humorous, serious, horrific with a strong sexual element. The inclusion of the poems breaks up the stories making the book a more interesting read. The stories range from bare fist fighting, naughty Nuns, Black Shuck the devil s dog, even god trying to make prettier bums for his angels, and a dog on trial trying to stop them removing his nuts ! Truly a strange story collection.

Book excerpt: The Invasion of Marcia Lake purports to be a fable that is told to a Naturalist from the United Kingdom who, nearly at the same time, chances upon two life-altering discoveries. The first is finding the whereabouts of the definitive ancient Volume on Taxonomy, "The Taxonomic Compendium of Eighteen Thirty-five", a huge tome, illustrated with hundreds of line engravings, and containing the most complete listings of all known Science pertaining to Nature from that time period. The second is that he soon meets and is able to speak with a group representing Nature and its many dozens of different species. The T.C. of 1835 is in the hands of a Naturalist living on a houseboat in Florida, who has contacted our narrator-translator in the "Scilly Isles", a man who is himself a famous Scientist/ Naturalist/ Linguist named Dr. Carlton Lyme, of Cornwall, England. He is related to both Charles Darwin and Carl Linneaus, and he arrives in the States to review the authenticity of the T.C. of 1835. While there, he explores the wildlife in the nearby swampy marshland by rowboat, (he is at heart a Naturalist), and makes the startling discovery that his linguistic research specialty, that of the ancient Cornish language is spoken by a Community of Inhabitants, as he refers to them.
