Book excerpt: The Gods of Pegāna (1905) is a short story collection by Lord Dunsany. Published at the beginning of his career, The Gods of Pegāna would influence such writers as J. R. R. Tolkein, Ursula K. Le Guin, and H. P. Lovecraft. Recognized as a pioneering author of fantasy and science fiction, Dunsany is a man whose work, in the words of Lovecraft, remains “unexcelled in the sorcery of crystalline singing prose, and supreme in the creation of a gorgeous and languorous world of incandescently exotic vision.” “Whether the season be winter or whether it be summer, whether it be morning among the worlds or whether it be night, Skarl still beateth his drum, for the purposes of the gods are not yet fulfilled.” The Gods of Pegāna, Dunsany’s debut collection of stories, contains some of his finest tales of fantasy and adventure. The Mana-Yood-Sushai created the gods of Pegāna before falling asleep in the middle of Time. The only thing keeping him from creating new gods and worlds is the drummer Skarl, who can never cease his playing. In their creator’s absence, dozens of small gods and a thousand local deities have free reign to create the worlds and realities they want. As they compete to outdo one another, the order and peace of Pegāna hangs in the balance. Humorous and inventive, Dunsany’s tales of high fantasy continue to delight over a century after they first appeared in print. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Lord Dunsany’s The Gods of Pegāna is a classic of Irish fantasy fiction reimagined for modern readers.

"I tell you the way you do be going on with the ass is enough to make a Christian man swear, so it is." "You let me be," she replied. "If I was doing hurt or harm to you I wouldn't mind, and if I am fond of the ass itself what does it matter to anybody?" "It's this way, that I don't like to see a woman kissing an ass on the snout, it's not natural nor proper." "A lot you know about natural and proper. Let you leave me alone now; and, besides that, doesn't the ass like it?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When more than one version of a story exists, choice has been made of that'one which seems best adapted to further the objects above indicated. The Greek names have been re tained in accordance with what is now recog nized as the only scholarly usage; but in the list of pronunciations the Latin equivalents are given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tooke's Pantheon of the Heathen Gods, and Illustrious Heroes: Revised for a Classical Course of Education, and Adapted for the Use of Students of Every Age and of Either Sex It is confessed that there arc already many books published on the present subject, two or three of which arc in our own tongue; and those, without doubt, will, by some men, be thought enough. But since this can be the opinion but of a few, and those unexperienced people, it has been judged more proper to regard the advice of many grave persons of known skill in the art of teaching; who, though they must acknowledge that Goodwin, in his Antiquities, has done very well in the whole, yet cannot but own that he has been too short in this point: that Rosse also, though he deserves commendation for his Mythology, is yet very tedious, and as much too large; and that Galtruchius, as D'Assigny has translated and dished him out to us, is so confused and artless in his method, as well as unfortunate in his corrections, that it in nowise answers the purpose it was designed for; and hereupon this work was recommended to be translated, being first well approved by learned gentlemen, as is above mentioned, for its easy method and agreeable plainness. Besides, it having been written by so learned a person, and that for the use of so great a prince, and so universally received in our neighbour nations, as to have sold several impressions in a short time, there was no room to doubt of its being well received here. Book excerpt: Time and the Gods (1906) is a short story collection by Lord Dunsany. Published at the beginning of his career, Time and the Gods, a sequel to The Gods of Pegāna (1905), would influence such writers as J. R. R. Tolkein, Ursula K. Le Guin, and H. P. Lovecraft. Recognized as a pioneering author of fantasy and science fiction, Dunsany is a man whose work, in the words of Lovecraft, remains "unexcelled in the sorcery of crystalline singing prose, and supreme in the creation of a gorgeous and languorous world of incandescently exotic vision." "Once when the gods were young and only Their swarthy servant Time was without age, the gods lay sleeping by a broad river upon earth. There in a valley that from all the earth the gods had set apart for Their repose the gods dreamed marble dreams." Time and the Gods, Dunsany's second collection of stories, contains some of his finest tales of fantasy and adventure. From their "marble dreams" arose a city fit for the gods, a sweeping expanse of towers, terraces, lawns, and fountains known as Sardathrion. Protected by mountains and a vast desert, safe in the heart of a fertile valley, the city of the gods is a place to which few humans go, and from which none can return. Dunsany's tales of high fantasy continue to delight over a century after they first appeared in print. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Lord Dunsany's Time and the Gods is a classic of Irish fantasy fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: A new edition of the Fantasy Tales that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft A pioneer in the realm of imaginative literature, Lord Dunsany has gained a cult following for his influence on modern fantasy literature, including such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien and H. P. Lovecraft. This unique collection of short stories ranges over five decades of work. Liberal selections of earlier tales—including the entire Gods of Pegana as well as such notable works as "Idle Days of the Yann" and "The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth"—are followed by memorable later tales, including several about the garrulous traveler Joseph Jorkens and the outrageous murder tale "The Two Bottles of Relish." Throughout, the stories are united by Dunsany's cosmic vision, his impeccable and mellifluous prose, and his distinctively Irish sense of whimsy. Here published for the first time by Penguin Classics, this edition is the only annotated version of Dunsany's short stories. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
