Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jeremiah I. Dibua challenges prevailing notions of Africa's development crisis by drawing attention to the role of modernization as a way of understanding the nature and dynamics of the crisis, and how to overcome the problem of underdevelopment. He specifically focuses on Nigeria and its development trajectory since it exemplifies the crisis of underdevelopment in the continent. He explores various theoretical and empirical issues involved in understanding the crisis, including state, class, gender and culture, often neglected in analysis, from an interdisciplinary, radical political economy perspective. This is the first book to adopt such an approach and to develop a new framework for analyzing Nigeria's and Africa's development crisis. It will influence the debate on the development dilemma of African and Third World societies and will be of interest to scholars and students of race and ethnicity, modern African history, class analysis, gender studies, and development studies.

Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a South-South conference jointly organized by the Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA), the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) in Dakar, Senegal, May 2012. The conference was organised in response to the financial crisis of 2008 which started in the United States and Europe, with reverberating effects on a global scale. Economic problems emanating from such crises usually leave major social and structural impacts on important sectors of the society internationally. They affect living standards and constrain the well-being of people, especially in poor countries. Persistent problems include high unemployment, increased debt and low growth in developed countries, as well as greater difficulties in accessing finance for investment in the developing world. There is a need for countries in the South to examine the available options for appropriate national and regional responses to the different problems emanating from the economic crisis. This book attempts to provide ideas on some strategic responses to the disastrous impact of the crisis, while keeping in mind the global common interest of the South. It is hoped that the book will contribute significantly towards the agenda to rethink development and the quest for alternative paradigms for a just, stable and equitable global political, economic and social system. A system in which Africa, Asia, and Latin America are emancipated from the shackles of hegemonic and anachronistic neoliberal dictates that have nothing more to offer than crises, vulnerabilities and dependency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world economy is facing the most severe financial crisis since the Great Depression of the last century. The risk of global recession has heightened significantly and volatility of commodity prices, which is the mainstay of most developing countries like Nigeria, has increased further. If this situation continues to deteriorate, developing countries could be in great jeopardy. This study examined the influence of the Global Financial Crisis on Nigerian economy. It was discovered that the financial crisis will cause fall in commodity prices, decline in export, lower portfolio and FDI inflow, fall in equity market, decline in remittance from abroad etc. It was recommended that the federal government should come up with intervention policies that will minimize these effects and jump start the economy and that business operator should learn to do things using resources at their disposal to develop and expand at manageable level to stem the tide of the crisis.

The current global financial crisis is triggered by events in the United States, and rapidly engulfing the entire globe. Nigerian financial market being one of the emerging global markets have over the last four years witnessed some significant level of progress and stability in the form of recapitalization and consolidation of its financial institutions. These reforms though commendable, yet could not shield the banks and the entire economy from the global financial crisis. This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy.Methodology/Technique - Descriptive analysis through secondary sources of data employed. A stratified sampling method adopted to select between the two strata that are the strongest and the weakest in terms of capital based. Four organizations were chosen from each stratum making eight banks and the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as the sample size of the study.Findings - This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy. It was observed that Nigerian banks are open to global practices and business relationships with foreign banks that are badly affected by the crisis. While investors lose confidence in the Nigerian markets as stocks and oil fall drastically almost daily. This has almost resulted in drastic cut in the foreign capital inflow for the country.Novelty - Based on the above findings the study recommends that Nigerian government should diversify the economy by improving the state of infrastructure, intensify the war against corruption, propose bailout measures for privatized companies and ensure fair and sincere democracy.Type of Paper: Conceptual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work studied the effect of global financial crisis on Nigeria economy in Nigeria. The financial crisis ravaging the global economy is naturally a serious cause for concern to policy makers. Secondary data were used in this study, the data were collected from CBN statistical bulletin also data were also gathered from journals and textbook that are related to the research topic. The overall significance of the regression is tested using Fisher's statistics. In this study the calculated F* value of 47.375 is significant at 5%. The result however show that linear relationship exist between the dependent and the independent variables of the model. The evidence established that the independent explanatory variables have individual and combine impact on the market capitalization in Nigeria. There is significant relationship between global financial crisis and capital market in Nigeria. Some of the recommendations made in this study are that. There is an urgent need for the total overhaul of regulations and regulatory framework, in order to enhance both the on-site and off-site examination and supervision of the banks. There is the need for increased and enhanced provisions for consumer protection. Nigerian economy is a mono-economy; any crash on the price of oil internationally will cripple our economy. So it is a matter of urgency for the Nigerian economy to divest into agriculture, manufacturing, information technology etc. Political stability is an important factor that encourages investment in an economy. So our nascent democracy should be nurtured.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial sectors in low-income sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are among the world's least developed. In fact, assets in most low-income African countries are smaller than those held by a single medium-sized bank in an industrial country. The absence of deep, efficient financial markets seriously challenges policy making, hinders poverty alleviation, and constrains growth. This book argues that building efficient and sound financial sectors in SSA countries will improve Africa's economic prospects. Based on a review of the key features of financial systems, it discusses the main obstacles and challenges that financial structures pose for SSA economies and recommends steps that could address major shortcomings in implementing the reform agenda.

This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global food, fuel, and fertilizer prices have risen rapidly in recent months, driven in large part by the fallout from the ongoing war in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia. Other factors, such as export bans, have also contributed to rising prices. Palm oil and wheat prices increased by 56 and 100 percent in real terms, respectively, between June 2021 and April 2022, with most of the in-crease occurring since February (Figure 1). Wide variation exists across products, with real maize prices increasing by only 11 percent and rice prices declining by 13 percent. The price of crude oil and natural gas has also risen substantially, while the weighted average price of fertilizer has dou-bled. With these changes in global prices, many developing countries and their development part-ners are concerned about the implications for economic stability, food security, and poverty.
