The work on the farms, the fields and the classes are of primary importance. The students who come to the school and who invest in it three precious years of their youth, must be cognizant of the fact that everything else is secondary to the final aim and end of this invest ment, which is to prepare for an agricultural life. While all activities, social, athletic and literary have the full endorsement and support ofthe Faculty, they are secondary to the primary object of the school and must always be so regarded by the student body. He pon dered over the difference in their respective positions in the store, and concluded that it was manifestly impossible for him to show her even the slightest degree of favoritism. Still - ahem - no, he must not. The dignity of his office would not per mit of the slightest deviation from his fixed rule of refusing to have anything to say to other employees, except when required. However. This resolve was soon to be tested and found wanting. It started in the elevator one day when he knew she was going to the day nursery for children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gleaner, Vol. 34: July, 1930 In the activities of the Hebrew people of Newark, Mr. Schlesinger has played an important part. He is particularly interested in the maintenance of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum and is a director of the society governing it. He also was formerly a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, and was a chairman of the Building Committee under whose direction its handsome new temple was erected. He is a member of the Executive Board of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and Chairman of the National Board of State Directors of The National Farm School. These are only high spots relating to the career of a modest man, whom it has been my privilege to know intimately for many years. Had he done nothing more than his constructive work for The National Farm School, the results obtained would alone merit your esteem and appreciation. During our Jubilee Campaign, the object of which was the raising of funds necessary for maintenance and improvement, he graciously accepted the Chairmanship of the Newark Drive, which resulted in the city going over the top of their quota, which was The collections made in much larger cities were far below this amount, and Newark, N. J stood almost at the head of the list. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gleaner, Vol. 34: October Issue, 1929 At the Horticulture department it seems they can't get enough help to do the picking. For the last two weeks, peaches were in the spotlight with 1116 baskets and brought in $1045 in cash. Practically all Smokehouse apples have been picked and have sold well. For the remainder of the apple crop they expect to get very good prices this year on account of the cold spell that killed the blossoms in several of the surrounding sections. Several tons of grapes have been harvested from our vineyard. Most of the vegetables are off now, and late crops are making great headway, for example, late cabbage and lettuce are 100 per cent crops. Of our vegetables. The hot sun beamed comfortably down upon Hank Whist as he rode on the cultivator, with eyes busily intent on a steady, blurred vision of brown, loose dirt turning over from the cultivator and passing on behind. He awakened into life to chirp softly to the horse, Gee there Kate, Gee! Then he drowsed back into his hunched posture, came to the end of the row, raised the hoes, and got off. He glanced over the field. Three quarters of it was done and glanced back at him - a brown dusty mulch with waves of radiating heat broken by long accurately spaced rows. The remainder of the field seemed still more shining as a smooth, even cake of greyish earth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
