Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 85: January to June, 1916 The number of flies in every part of the world is dependent upon the existence of conditions suitable for their development, and it may at once be said. That the whole problem of the house fly as a nuisance and as a menace to health hangs around its processes cf breeding and feeding. A full appreciation of the problem and of the means of its solution rests on an intimate knowledge of these processes. It will therefore be our first duty to make ourselves acquainted with the development of the fly from egg to adult, with the structure and function of certain parts of its body, and with its habits of feeding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 83: January to June, 1915 There is no record of hospitals for the sick, either under that or any other name, in pagan Rome; but it is to be supposed that some existed, for the first hospital of which we have any record was of considerable size, and history shows that all things grow from small beginnings: nothing springs suddenly into full development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 89: January to June, 1918 The advent of the electron theory has given us the means of building up a very reasonable explanation of the physical aspect of colour. Although we are not concerned at present with the constitution of matter, it will be of assistance to picture what an atom of matter is now supposed to be. We picture the atom as being composed of nothing but positive and negative electricities. We imagine a core of positive electricity (whatever that may be), and embedded in it a number of particles of negative electricity, each particle of which is called an electron. Around this central core we picture a ring of satellite electrons, revolving at an enormous speed, approaching the velocity of light. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 91: January to June, 1919 Italy bleeding was extensively practised, and nearly all those who were bled died, of them in Rome alone. In unbled patients the mortality was very low. The weather conditions varied from intense heat to unusual cold there were earthquakes in Yorkshire and Kent. During this epidemic, in the month of August, while an English force was advancing through Kerry in the war against the Desmonds suddenlie such a sicknes came among the' soldiers, which tooke them in the head, that at one instant there were above three hundred of them sicke. And for three daies they laie as dead stockes, looking still when they' should die; but yet such was the good will of God that few died for they all recovered. This Sicknesse not long after came into England and was called the gentle correction. In this year the weekly deaths in London rose from 55 in the end of June to 133 and 146 in the middle of July, falling gradually to the previous rate by the middle of August. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 63: January to June, 1905 And these latter should not be regarded as pathological processes, but really as physiological in nature, exaggerated it may be or deviated by abnormal states. They are conveniently grouped as the formative and functionating processes, and have their prototypes in the normal growth and development of the body or in the normal life of the fully developed organs and tissues. We shall see that increased proliferation of cells and increased functional activity constitute the defensive mechanism in disease. It is manifest, though the fact is often overlooked, that in the scientific study of the phenomena in any diseased state we must resolve them into their simplest constituents and then discuss the significance of each. Thus, in conditions of infection the behaviour of the leucocytes, the nature and significance of exudation, alterations in the capillary endothelium and such like, would be separately considered. But so long as such a phenomenon as inflammation is treated as a single pathological process, attempts to define it and assign its biological significance can only result in endless dialectic. The subject of defensive mechanism may be treated of in two main parts - the first dealing with the histological changes visible with the microscope, and the second, with these subtle chemical substances in the cells and fluids of the body which play so important a part both in protection against infective agents and in cure of disease. It need hardly be stated that the latter are the ultimate weapons of defence, but the visible cellular activities form an important underlying mechanism. The chief cellular activities are, of course, embraced in the term phagocytosis, and the main facts are now so well known that they do not need to be repeated by me. A few points may, however, be referred to. That intracellular destruction of bacteria occurs is undoubted, and in this there are two factors, viz., ingestion and digestion; both are essential. Ingestion is largely governed by what is known as chemio-taxis - the attraction or repulsion of living cells by chemical substances. Whether all movements of phagocytes in the presence of bacteria are explicable in this way must be regarded as still doubtful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 43: January to June, 1895 As a temporary hypnotic for acute cases in private practice, and as a sedative for chronic and incurable cases of excitement, it is of great service, but its administration requires to be carefully watched, as with little warning symptoms of great severity may arise, and the life of the patient be endangered. There was possibly, also, some weakness of the facial muscles. Sensation to touch was abolished below the level of the feeling of constriction, and it was greatly impaired in the arms, particularly in the right. Severe pain was complained of over the spine between the shoulders, and headache also was very troublesome. No diaphragmatic movement could be seen, the respiration being carried on very feebly. Deep inspiration was very limited, the xiphoid movement not being greater than about a quarter of an inch. There was no motion of the bowels, and the urine, which was passed in bed, gave a very faint sugar reaction. The breath had a very foul odour, but the temperature and the condition of the lungs and heart were quite normal. He died from loss of respiratory power, the heart acting well and strongly up to the last. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
