It was quite a mess, and I had a hard time in the aftermath of writing it deciding what to make of it. I was exploring stream of consciousness writing, and it was my first foray into fiction, somewhat, though I found myself jumping into the narrative, breaking the fourth wall. The book centers on a young woman named Sid, who we find at loose ends and feeling disconnected from friends, remembering the only man she ever loved who died before her dark eyes after saving her from OD?ing, twice; and her mother's death, a suicide; her father's illness, leaving him catatonic; and finding herself unemployed with no direction, a dark seed is planted in her otherwise strong spirit.

Book excerpt: This is a novella of about 50,000 words, written for National Novel Writing Month in 2014. It is a literary novella about a girl named Sid who contemplates whether life is worth living. There is also an AUTHOR that keeps jumping into the story, and a few other odd characters that take over the narrative. It contains a lot of musings on life and death and some stream of consciousness writing. It has been described as "unappealing" and "too dark" and "sloppy" and was accused of "using too many pronouns" by some of the random internet people who have seen portions of it. My friend and only current reader really liked it, however, and felt it sucked her in no matter what part she was reading. It is her favorite book of mine. Not much happens. It really is just a long, despairing, stream of consciousness diatribe about life and death. And there is nothing conclusive, no particular message I try to get across. Just a muddy musing about the girl who was sorrow's friend.

Book excerpt: A powerful tragedy distilled into a small masterpiece by the Nobel Prize-winning author of Beloved and, almost like a prelude to that story, set two centuries earlier. Jacob is an Anglo-Dutch trader in 1680s United States, when the slave trade is still in its infancy. Reluctantly he takes a small slave girl in part payment from a plantation owner for a bad debt. Feeling rejected by her slave mother, 14-year-old Florens can read and write and might be useful on his farm. Florens looks for love, first from Lina, an older servant woman at her new master's house, but later from the handsome blacksmith, an African, never enslaved, who comes riding into their lives . . . At the novel's heart, like Beloved, it is the ambivalent, disturbing story of a mother and a daughter – a mother who casts off her daughter in order to save her, and a daughter who may never exorcise that abandonment.

Book excerpt: God made you for friendship. Friendship is one of the deepest pleasures of life. But in our busy, fast-paced, mobile world, we've lost this rich view of friendship and instead settled for shallow acquaintances based on little more than similar tastes or shared interests. Helping us recapture a vision of true friendship, pastor Drew Hunter explores God's design for friendship and what it really looks like in practice—giving us practical advice to cultivate the kinds of true friendships that lead to true and life-giving joy.

While on the surface Elfrieda's life is enviable (she's a world-renowned pianist, glamorous, wealthy, and happily married) and Yolandi's a mess (she's divorced and broke, with two teenagers growing up too quickly), they are fiercely close-raised in a Mennonite household and sharing the hardship of Elf's desire to end her life. After Elf's latest attempt, Yoli must quickly determine how to keep her family from falling apart while facing a profound question: what do you do for a loved one who truly wants to die? All My Puny Sorrows is a deeply personal story that is as much comedy as it is tragedy, a goodbye grin from the friend who taught you how to live.

Ever since their parents got married, she's made Molly and Michael's life miserable. Now their parents have moved them all to the country to live in a house that used to be a church, with a cemetery in the backyard. If that's not bad enough, Heather starts talking to a ghost named Helen and warning Molly and Michael that Helen is coming for them. Molly feels certain Heather is in some kind of danger, but every time she tries to help, Heather twists things around to get her into trouble. It seems as if things can't get any worse. But they do—when Helen comes.

Book excerpt: When watching a friend or loved one grieve a loss, you certainly want to help. But how, exactly; can you help? In what manner? With which tasks? In A Good Friend for Bad Times, grief counselors Deborah Bowen and Susan Strickler offer advice and concrete suggestions for helping a friend throughout the grief experience. A remarkably practical resource, this book first grounds you with an understanding of normal responses to grief, then offers insight for expressing sympathy and emotional support. In subsequent chapters, the authors give specific suggestions for both "what to do" and "what not to do" when providing assistance all through your friend's grief journey -- when anticipating a loved one's death, immediately after that death, and in the months and years beyond. In addition, this book relates how you can be supportive when the death involved particular circumstances, such as Alzheimer's disease, cancer, AIDS, suicide, or the death of a child. Special chapters advise how to comfort a friend whose loved one died in a catastrophic event; how to acknowledge your friend's grief on holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries; and how to reassure and console young children. In short, this hands-on guidebook will help you act on your impulse to be a good friend in bad times. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: "A loving testament to the work and reward of the best friendships, the kind where your arms can’t distinguish burden from embrace.” — People New York Times Bestselling author Ann Patchett’s first work of nonfiction chronicling her decades-long friendship with the critically acclaimed and recently deceased author, Lucy Grealy. Ann Patchett and the late Lucy Grealy met in college in 1981, and, after enrolling in the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, began a friendship that would be as defining to both of their lives as their work. In Gealy's critically acclaimed and hugely successful memoir, Autobiography of a Face, she wrote about losing part of her jaw to childhood cancer, years of chemotherapy and radiation, and endless reconstructive surgeries. In Truth & Beauty, the story isn't Lucy's life or Ann's life, but the parts of their lives they shared together. This is a portrait of unwavering commitment that spans twenty years, from the long cold winters of the Midwest, to surgical wards, to book parties in New York. Through love, fame, drugs, and despair, this is what it means to be part of two lives that are intertwined...and what happens when one is left behind. This is a tender, brutal book about loving the person we cannot save. It is about loyalty and being uplifted by the sheer effervescence of someone who knew how to live life to the fullest.

Book excerpt: Throughout our lives, we are influenced by the sensation of loss. Whether implicit or obvious, the impact of this sense of loss affects our daily thinking and behavior. This new text provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of loss via exploration into three major types of loss: loss of important relationships (divorce or perhaps the dissolution of important relationships and friendships); losses that damage who we are, our self-esteem (loss of employment); and losses resulting from victimization (being the target of violence or prejudice; loss of home in a natural disaster). Students of sociology, theology, and family studies will find this text of key interest. Moreover, professionals in these fields, including the fields of trauma and loss, will appreciate the thorough literature review, practical language, clinical interventions, and case highlights.

At their request and for their convenience the volume is published. While hundreds of addresses to young women of college age have found their way into print, the books that deal with the problems and needs of younger girls and that look at life from their point of view are few. Though these talks were inspired by the needs of a definite group, the author will be glad if the book finds a wider audience.
