Book excerpt: Who can say no to a vulnerable woman who needs assistance? Certainly not Patrick Miles Atwater. But it may be the worst mistake he will ever make. Patrick, a private investigator, is a hero in Los Angeles. An ex-marine and ex-police officer, he's truly a stand-up guy. His duty, as he sees it, is to help the victims of monstrous men-and he takes that obligation seriously. When Rachel Stone Barbieri finds him at his local watering hole, she says she needs his help-but her motives are murky and her intentions unclear. Patrick knows he can't trust her, but at the same time, he finds he can't turn this intriguing woman away. Claiming she suspects her husband of having an affair, she wants to engage Patrick's services to confirm her suspicions-and despite his better judgment, Patrick takes the case. He was wary of her from the get-go, but even Patrick can't foresee the magnitude of trouble this simple case of adultery will lead to. Accused of murder and hunted by the police, will Los Angeles's hero uncover the truth and live another day-or will the woman in the yellow dress be his ultimate downfall?

Book excerpt: JOHN is brought up on an isolated farm near York, spends his spare time birdwatching, lives with an unsympathetic stepfather and loving mother, and attends Hull University as the government pays his expenses. He worries about serious relationships with girls and has no idea of what career to follow. His experience so far is as a farm hand and a hospital porter. A letter he finds at home confirms his biological father is alive but has no intention of helping him. On Bonfire Night 1965 (Guy Fawkes Night), during his final undergraduate year, he meets a fellow student, JEAN-LOUISE, and a romantic relationship develops. In many ways she is different from John; she is a town girl, brought up by loving parents, is an only child, has opposing politics and knows what she wants to be – a fashion buyer for Marks & Spencer. The obstacle is her mother is ill with muscular dystrophy and she must help take care of her parents. She surprises John by encouraging his birdwatching. John joins Ford of Britain as a graduate trainee and after an uncertain start, is placed in industrial relations and decides to study for a graduate degree with the Institute of Personnel Management. He also discovers more about his real father. What happens to the couple during the subsequent 10 years as they navigate their careers, have to deal with events that take place in Britain during the period and manage personal issues at home, are the subjects of this book. There is panic buying during the 1974, 3-day working week, the affects on home life of Britain's entry into the Common Market, annual inflation driven above 25 percent in part because of trade union militancy, and many other national incidents. A unique feature of the novel is the use of bird species to illustrate human behavior and character. At the end of each chapter there is an illustration of the featured bird from that chapter to provide a summary of the bird's appearance and habitat in case the reader is interested. The novel blends British history, ornithology, success at work, discrimination against women and the challenges of home life into a single story.

Songs of despair and anguish – nothing more than silent screams from a secret world that was once sickened by all; has now risen up to rule our society. Like so much of my existence and those like me, our story begins at the moment of inception – the inauguration of the brotherhood, and carried forward through the curvature of our pain.” - The girl in the yellow dress A dystopian fantasy set within a society barren of any reason.

Patricia and Richard Wiley, an elderly white couple, are packing up to leave the farm they’ve sold to developers. Their preparations are interrupted by the arrival of a young man – ‘Look Smart’ – who used to be one of the black workers on their estate until he disappeared fifteen years ago. The day before Look Smart left, something terrible happened on the Wileys’ farm. But everyone has a different memory of the dreadful event and their own role in it. As the different accounts of their shared past are unravelled, they are all forced to confront their own versions of the truth – with shocking ramifications for their lives today. Dream of the Dog is a richly textured and complex story of South Africa’s emerging democracy, and its continued negotiation with its past in order to find a workable identity for its future. Critically acclaimed in South Africa, this new play takes an unflinching look at the twin mantras of the post-Mandela age – reconciliation and forgiveness – as it asks whether black and white can ever live together peacefully.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auschwitz, 1942: This unforgettable novel, based on a true story, brings to life history's most powerful tale of forbidden love. Set within the barbed wire of Auschwitz, a man and a woman fall in love against unimaginable odds. What happens next will restore your faith in humanity, and make you believe in hope even where hope should not exist "I won't let anything happen to you," he whispered, pressing a note into her hand. Her entire body trembled when she read it: I am in love with you. Helena steps off the cattle train onto the frozen grounds of Auschwitz. She has twenty-four hours to live. Scheduled to be killed tomorrow, she is not even tattooed with a prison number. As the snow falls around her, she shivers, knowing that she has been sentenced to death for a crime she didn't commit. When a gray-clad officer marches towards Helena and pulls her away, she fears the worst. Instead, he tells her that it's one of the guard's birthdays and orders her to serenade him. Inside the SS barracks the air is warm, thick with cigarette smoke and boisterous conversation. After she sings to the guard, Franz, he presses a piece of cake into her hands--the first thing she has eaten in days. On the spot, he orders her life to be saved, forever changing the course of her fate. What follows is a love story that was forbidden, that should have been impossible, and yet saved both of their lives--and hundreds of others--in more ways than one. Fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Choice, and The Orphan Train will be utterly entranced by this unputdownable page-turner. This completely heartbreaking yet beautifully hopeful novel shows that love can survive anything and grow anywhere. This book was previously published as Auschwitz Syndrome. At the heart of the story is Wanda Petronski, a Polish girl in a Connecticut school who is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. Wanda claims she has one hundred dresses at home, but everyone knows she doesn't and bullies her mercilessly. The class feels terrible when Wanda is pulled out of the school, but by that time it's too late for apologies. Maddie, one of Wanda's classmates, ultimately decides that she is "never going to stand by and say nothing again." This powerful, timeless story has been reissued with a new letter from the author's daughter Helena Estes, and with the Caldecott artist Louis Slobodkin's original artwork in beautifully restored color.
