Book excerpt: Allison Briscoe is your average fifteen-year-old-until someone tries to kill her. Shot in the head, her doctors and family think she is in a coma, but in fact, though she cannot move, she can think, she can hear, and she can dream. Each night, Allison lives vicariously through her pioneer ancestors, experiencing their adventures through their eyes. First, she enters the world of Rebecca Haun, a fifteen-year-old rebel who lived in Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. To prove a friend innocent of murder, Rebecca betrays her Mennonite beliefs and joins the Women's Brigade with George Washington's rag-tag army at Valley Forge. And each day, Allison struggles to find a way to show her family that she is awake - a goal that becomes increasingly desperate when she realizes that whoever shot her has come back to finish the job.
Download or read book The Girl In A Coma written by Sanvi Bhat and published by Vishal Bhat. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coma, interesting word. Sounds more like comma - not literally, but metaphorically; "not a full stop to life, but a comma." Imagine you're on a hospital bed, apparently not alive to whatever is happening around you. However, you can hear it, experiencing everything, and trying to talk to the people you love and the world outside. The book is thoughtfully written by the author that crams a great deal of emotions like, distress, fear, frustration, as well as her hope for recovery. Throughout the journey, the readers will feel the terror and agony that being in a coma brings, especially for children. It is an experience different for everyone. Depending on how deep it is, some people can actually feel what is happening around them, while others don't. A Girl in a Coma is a series of events, good and bad, for a girl who is unconscious and helpless. The day of wetness came out of hands as it was a stormy, thundering, and flashing afternoon. Fire, screams, and pain went throughout the hospital. There were terrible and unbelievable hot burning flames of fire everywhere - everything is a twist and turn of a rollercoaster ride. The girl lies in hospital. She can't speak, move and eat anything. But she could hear and was well aware. Her parents try desperately to reach her. Until one day, against hospital rules, Dad brings Melisa, her dog, into the hospital. Can Melisa bring the girl back to life? The Girl in a Coma does not just focus on negative events. The author, Sanvi Bhatt, illustrates that positive things can come out of even the worst situations.

Perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Rebecca Serle. What would you do if your dream man turned out to be real? When law student Cass Walker wakes up after surviving a car accident, she is flooded with memories of her boyfriend, Devin. The only problem? Devin doesn't exist. But everything she remembers about him feels so real, like the precise shade of his coffee-brown eyes; the texture of his favorite hand-me-down scarf; even the slightly crooked angle of his pinkie, broken after falling off a trampoline in third grade. She knows he's a figment of her imagination--friends, family, and doctors confirm it--but she still can't seem to get him out of her head. So when she runs into the real Devin a year later in a Cleveland flower shop, she's completely shocked. Even more surprising is that Devin actually believes her story, and soon they embark on a real-life romance. With her dream man by her side and an upcoming summer job at a prestigious law firm, Cass's future seems perfect. But fate might have other plans... From the beloved author of Shipped comes a magical and witty romantic comedy that explores what happens when our dreams come true--even when they're not the ones we expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the Ministry of Jesus is a study of both of Jesus' attitudes towards women as reflected in his words and deeds, and of the women who were part of his ministry, or who interacted with him according to the Gospel accounts. The book seeks to provide a balanced analysis of the relevant Biblical material, and also the historical background necessary to illuminate the setting of the Gospel events. Particular attention is given to related issues such as Jesus' views on marriage, the family and the single life, as well as his teaching on adultery, the laws of the clean and unclean and the sabbath. Witherington concludes that Jesus cannot be categorized neatly either as chauvinist or as feminist.

Grounded by the African concept of ubuntu--"I am because we are"--I Am a Girl from Africa charts Elizabeth's quest in pursuit of her dream from the small village of Goromonzi to Harare, London, New York, and beyond, where she eventually became a Senior Advisor at the United Nations and launched HeForShe, one of the world's largest global solidarity movements for gender equality. For over two decades, Elizabeth has been instrumental in creating change in communities all around the world; uplifting the lives of others, just as her life was once uplifted. Book Synopsis A Woman's View by : Jeanine Basinger
Download or read book A Woman's View written by Jeanine Basinger and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now, Voyager, Stella Dallas, Leaver Her to Heaven, Imitation of Life, Mildred Pierce, Gilda…these are only a few of the hundreds of “women’s films” that poured out of Hollywood during the thirties, forties, and fifties. The films were widely disparate in subject, sentiment, and technique, they nonetheless shared one dual purpose: to provide the audience (of women, primarily) with temporary liberation into a screen dream—of romance, sexuality, luxury, suffering, or even wickedness—and then send it home reminded of, reassured by, and resigned to the fact that no matter what else she might do, a woman’s most important job was…to be a woman. Now, with boundless knowledge and infectious enthusiasm, Jeanine Basinger illuminates the various surprising and subversive ways in which women’s films delivered their message. Basinger examines dozens of films, exploring the seemingly intractable contradictions at the convoluted heart of the woman’s genre—among them, the dilemma of the strong and glamorous woman who cedes her power when she feels it threatening her personal happiness, and the self-abnegating woman whose selflessness is not always as “noble” as it appears. Basinger looks at the stars who played these women and helps us understand the qualities—the right off-screen personae, the right on-screen attitudes, the right faces—that made them personify the woman’s film and equipped them to make believable drama or comedy out of the crackpot plots, the conflicting ideas, and the exaggerations of real behavior that characterize these movies. In each of the films the author discusses—whether melodrama, screwball comedy, musical, film noir, western, or biopic—a woman occupies the center of her particular universe. Her story—in its endless variations of rags to riches, boy meets girl, battle of the sexes, mother love, doomed romance—inevitably sends a highly potent mixed message: Yes, you women belong in your “proper place” (that is, content with the Big Three of the women’s film world—men, marriage, and motherhood), but meanwhile, and paradoxically, see what fun, glamour, and power you can enjoy along the way. A Woman’s View deepens our understanding of the times and circumstances and attitudes out of which these movies were created.
