Book excerpt: Emerson Hough wrote a book titled "The Girl at the Halfway House," which was released in 1900. The narrative, which is set in the late 19th-century American West, centres on the adventures of Nan Brent, a mysterious and self-reliant young woman who becomes stuck in a desolate halfway house in the Wyoming wilderness. Nan gets entangled in the lives and struggles of the various people that dwell in the halfway house, such as innovators, cowboys, and outlaws, as she gets to know them. The main source of conflict is the rivalry between the homeowners and ranchers in the area as well as the potential for violence from a renown criminal group headed by Black Bart Haines. Nan's inventiveness and strong will make her an invaluable mediator in conflict resolution. As Nan works through the difficulties of life on the harsh western frontier, themes of justice, atonement, and the wild west are explored throughout the book. The storyline gains levels of mystery and suspense as Nan's true identity and her affiliation with the criminal gang become clear throughout the story.

One by one his comrades, even younger than himself, departed and joined the army hastening forward toward the throbbing guns. Spirited and proud, restive under com parisons which he had never heard but always dreaded to hear, Henry Fairfax begged his mother to let him go, though still She said, Not yet. But the lines of the enemy tightened ever about Louisburg. Then came a day - a fatal day fraught with the tidings of what seemed a double death. The wife of Colonel Henry Fairfax was grande dame that day, when she buried her hus band and sent away her son. There were yet tradi tions to support. Henry Fairfax said good-bye to Mary Ellen upon the gallery of the old home, beneath a solemn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One of his projects for Forest and Stream was to survey Yellowstone National Park in midwinter 1893, with a guide and 2 soldiers from the nearby fort of the same name. There were supposed to be more than 500 buffalo there, but their count barely reached 100. Due to Hough's report, eastern newspapers took up the cause against poaching, and in May 1894 the U.S. Congress passed a law making poaching of game in national parks a punishable offense.Later, he and other Saturday Evening Post writers wrote a letter for Stephen Mather and George Horace Latimer to sign, advocating the creation of a national park system. The National Park Service was created in 1916.In addition, he was a co-founder of the Izaak Walton League, an organization of outdoorsmen, in 1922.He wrote the "Out-of-Doors" column for the Saturday Evening Post and these columns later appeared in book form.

Only in the soul of a poet, a great man, could there have been conceived that thought by which the music of triumph should pass the little pinnacle of human exultation, and reach the higher plane of human sympathy. Forty black horses, keeping step; forty trumpeters, keeping unison; this procession, headed by a mere musician, who none the less was a poet, a great man, crossed the field of Louisburg as it lay dotted with the heaps of slain, and dotted also with the groups of those who sought their slain; crossed that field of woe, meeting only hatred and despair, yet leaving behind only tears and grief. Tears and grief, it is true, yet grief that knew of sympathy, and tears that recked of other tears.
