Book excerpt: Jacques Ellul is primarily known for his insightful critiques of Western culture. His recent books describe the "new demons" let loose upon the contemporary world by the double-edged achievements of science and industry. But he asserts in this latest book, the critics have gone too far. The West is the victim of a betrayal--that of its own children. Its intellectuals, most notably those of the Left, are necessarily that products of a civilized society. Yet they so loudly reproach this civilization for the atrocities and the destruction of rich local culture which have accompanied its growth that we are deaf to the reasoned voice which proclaims our debts to this Western tradition. When Ellul acknowledges the validity of many of these accusations, in The Betrayal Of The West he points out that they are not peculiar to the West, that they are indeed inherent in the growth of any civilization. And Ellul, as an historian, is a lover of civilization. He especially emphasizes the importance of the legacy of our own civilization. We are indebted to the West for our concepts of freedom, equality, and above all, the idea of the individual. In his words, "The West represents values for which there is no substitute. The West is a past, a difference, a shared history, and a shared human project ... The end of the West today would mean the end of any possible civilization." The Betrayal of the West explores the need for defense as well as critique of our culture. It explains the origins of the contradiction at the heart of Western Civilization and traces the course of this dialectic in three supreme chapters constructed around metaphors which correspond to the promise, the challenge, and, ultimately, the failure of the political left in Western societies.

Book excerpt: I thought I had a lot of questions before. Finding myself back in Besmet with the demon from my dreams, I'm finding it hard to deny the connection I feel toward him, despite the fact that he's certifiably insane. When did my life get so chaotic? My green magic isn't stable. My moods aren't stable. My ex isn't stable. Gran's not stable... oh who am I kidding? She's never been stable, so at least one of us is consistent. Luckily, I still have my guys; Cam, Fischer, Kai, and maybe Sloane. Honestly, I'm not sure that Sloane is capable of letting someone claim him, but he certainly makes my heart race. Secrets, lies, and prophecies are coming to light. Hopefully I put my trust in the right people because betrayal on it's own is terrible, but to be betrayed by those who swore to protect you? That would be devastating... This is a full-length RH romance, intended for adults 18 and over, which includes MMFMMM content. It ends on a cliffhanger and contains domestic violence including physical, mental, and sexual abuse and other themes that readers may find triggering. *This is the second book in a paranormal RH series.*

Book excerpt: Sexual misconduct by clergy is a devastating issue that reaches across all denominations, damaging the credibility of the church in its wake. The media regularly reports on the moral failure of leaders and abuse at the hands of those who are supposed to be trustworthy. Betrayal of Trust focuses on a common scenario of abuse--sexual involvement between a male pastor and a female congregant--and offers practical solutions on how to respond to and prevent this betrayal of trust. This book presents methods that will help churches respond sensitively to victims and implement policies and procedures to prevent abuse from taking place. For clergy who may be at risk for this behavior, it offers help in establishing appropriate boundaries. This second edition includes a new chapter that offers help for the wandering pastor and a risk-determination questionnaire for pastors who may become abusers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Seamlessly combines analytic rigor with personal memoir . . . its arguments are drawn from political history . . . Biblical commentary . . . novels and biographies.” (Amélie Rorty, Tufts University) Adultery, treason, and apostasy no longer carry the weight they once did. Yet we constantly see and hear stories of betrayal. Avishai Margalit argues that the tension between the ubiquity of betrayal and the loosening of its hold is a sign of the strain between ethics and morality, between thick and thin human relations. On Betrayal offers a philosophical account of thick human relations?relationships with friends, family, and core communities?through their pathology, betrayal. Judgments of betrayal often shift unreliably. A traitor to one side is a hero to the other. Yet the notion of what it means to betray is remarkably consistent across cultures and eras. Betrayal undermines thick trust, dissolving the glue that holds our most meaningful relationships together. On Betrayal is about ethics: what we owe to the people and groups that give us our sense of belonging. Drawing on literary, historical, and personal sources, Maraglit examines what our thick relationships are and should be and revives the long-discarded notion of fraternity. “Provocative and illuminating.” —Michael Walzer, Institute for Advanced Study “Witty and wise, precise and profound, On Betrayal is an easy but deep read: it sees life as it really is with all its turmoil.” —The Christian Century “The range of Margalit’s examples is astonishing. . . . He is much more knowledgeable about and comfortable with communities (and in communities) than most philosophers are, and so he is very good at recognizing when they go wrong.” —New York Review of Books

Book excerpt: In Connie Berry's third Kate Hamilton mystery, American antique dealer Kate Hamilton's spring is cut short when a body turns up at the May Fair pageant. Spring is a magical time in England--bluebells massing along the woodland paths, primrose and wild thyme dotting the meadows. Antiques dealer Kate Hamilton is spending the month of May in the Suffolk village of Long Barston, enjoying precious time with Detective Inspector Tom Mallory. While attending the May Fair, the annual pageant based on a well-known Anglo-Saxon folktale, a body turns up in the middle of the festivities. Kate is even more shocked when she learns the murder took place in antiquity shop owner Ivor Tweedy's stockroom and a valuable Chinese pottery jar that she had been tasked with finding a buyer for has been stolen. Ivor may be ruined. Insurance won't cover a fraction of the loss. As Tom leads the investigation, Kate begins to see puzzling parallels between the murder and local legends. The more she learns, the more convinced she is that the solution to both crimes lies in the misty depths of Anglo-Saxon history and a generations-old pattern of betrayal. It's up to Kate to unravel this Celtic knot of lies and deception to save Ivor's business.

Book excerpt: A “magnificent, brave, tender” novel of post-WWII Russia from the author of The Siege—shortlisted for the Orwell Prize and Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (The Independent on Sunday). Leningrad 1952. Andrei, a young doctor, and Anna, a nursery school teacher, have forged a life together in the postwar, post-siege wreckage. But they know their happiness is precarious, like that of millions of Russians who must avoid the claws of Stalin’s merciless Ministry of State Security. When Andrei is forced to treat the sick child of a senior secret police officer, his every move is scrutinized, making it painfully clear that his own fate—and that of his family—is bound to the child’s. Trapped in an impossible game of life and death, Andrei and Anna must avoid the whispers and watchful eyes of those who will say and do anything to save themselves . . . With The Betrayal, internationally acclaimed author Helen Dunmore “vividly depicts the difficulty of living by principle in a tyrannical society, in which paranoia infects every act, and even ordinary citizens become instruments of terror” (The New Yorker). “An emotionally charged thriller, The Betrayal unfolds breathlessly and with great skill. . . . You don’t want to put it down. . . . Elegant yet devastating.” —The Seattle Times “With precise period detail and astute psychological insight, Dunmore brings the last months of Stalin’s reign to life and reminds us why some eras shouldn’t be forgotten.” —Publishers Weekly

Peace. Treason. Friendship. A novel like none you've ever read. War and treachery threaten the legendary kingdom of Khazar. And only the young prince, Istrak, untried, unsure of himself, can lead his people back to harmony. The Betrayal is a novel too big to be defined by a simple description. It's a page-turner, with non-stop action and surprises. It's a family saga, following the lives, and the conflicts, of the many members of Khazar's royal house. It's a human drama, a story of growing up, of friendship and frailty; it's a mystery, with an unknown traitor plotting against the king. A tremendously popular bestseller in its original Hebrew, The Betrayal is a gripping saga that blends the mythic history of a fascinating kingdom with a compelling and contemporary message.

Book excerpt: The Gift of Love explores the intelligibility of Augustine’s claim that we come to know and encounter God in and through our love. Building upon the discoveries of recent scholarship, Andrew Staron reads Augustine’s De Trinitate not as presenting the Trinity as a concept to be grasped, but rather as a rational study of the limits of theological language and the possibility of coming to know the Trinity because of those limits. Human dependence on God’s initiative indicates that the Trinitarian God of love is knowable only through attention to how God’s self-revelation transforms and saves us. Therefore, to see God, one seeks to mark love’s formative activity within the heart. Jean-Luc Marion’s rigorous description of the gift of love offers to Augustine’s theology a phenomenological texture by which the Trinitarian love given in revelation might be made incarnate in one’s life. The Gift of Love presents a reason for hope that while coming to know “the Trinity that God is” might be impossible for human beings, it is made possible by God’s antecedent gift of love, given in the missions Son and Holy Spirit, and iconically received in the particularity of one’s own love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genealogies of Fiction is a study of gender, dynastic politics, and intertextuality in medieval and renaissance chivalric epic, focused on Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando furioso. Relying on the direct study of manuscripts and incunabula, this project challenges the fixed distinction between medieval and early modern texts and reclaims medieval popular epic as a key source for the Furioso. Tracing the formation of the character of the warrior woman, from the Amazon to Bradamante, the book analyzes the process of gender construction in early modern Italy. By reading the tension between the representations of women as fighters, lovers, and mothers, this study shows how the warrior woman is a symbolic center for the construction of legitimacy in the complex web of fears and expectations of the Northern Italian Renaissance court.
