This is no surprise to his fortune telling friend Millicent Zacharias who thought his sudden heart attach and subsequent cremation a bit too fast and "hokey" to be believed. Besides, her Tarot deck never showed the old man's name along with the Death card. Mrs. Z's cards never lie. Someone has been about the business of elimination the original member's of the Detective Club. Simon's assistant Tom McElrath and his wife had a near miss by dropping a flight east and stopping over at Denver. The plane they were supposed to be on was blown up in the air. Ginnie Smith, her husband, and tiny son have been killed and their house burnt to the ground. Simon, returned from a government journey to Iraq will not discuss why he disappeared and what he did. He is now accompanied by a cold-eyed young man named Archer Shane whose task it is to keep him alive and who takes his work seriously. The remaining members of the Detective Club: Millicent Zacharias, Prentice Dodd and Lieutenant Robert Campbell are not inclined to take the precautions Simon or Archer think they should.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brenton College may be a highly reputed private school of music and the arts, but there are deadly things associated with its director and staff. Are some of them victims or villains? In any event two students have been killed near the Demon Cave once owned by the head of Brenton College and now in Simon's possession. Fortunately, Tom McElrath's young stepbrother has appeared on the scene to take his place as Simon's assistant. His job will be to learn how to protect himself and Simon, attend and spy at the Brenton College, and stay alive. With two students murdered near the Demon's Cave, this is a risky business indeed. With the wily Mildred Brenton guarding her school, Simon may have met his match. As usual, Lieutenant Robert Campbell of the Ben Nevis Homicide Department has more assistance than he wants from Simon, Mrs. Zacharias, and now young Alex McElrath.

Book excerpt: Sylvia Ashton-Warner, novelist and educationist, was extraordinarily famous in the 1960s. She maintained that young children best learn to read and write when they produce their own vocabulary, especially sex words—like ‘kiss’, and fear words—like ‘ghost’. Educators lauded her. Her autobiographical novels about teaching in remote schools, and being culturally abandoned in a remote country, New Zealand, attained enormous international popularity in both literary and educational circles. But she had an intensely ambivalent relationship with the land of her birth. Despite receiving many accolades in New Zealand, she claimed to have been rejected and persecuted by her homeland. In her darkest moments, she railed against New Zealand and New Zealanders, even stating in one television interview: “I’m not a New Zealander!” This is the first book to make Sylvia Ashton-Warner’s passionately difficult relationship with New Zealand its central focus. Its contributors argue that, rather than stultifying her, the country she decried produced Sylvia and her work. In addition, infant schooling in New Zealand in the post-war years was relatively radical and progressive, and education officials seemed to welcome Sylvia’s ideas about literacy. The edited collection includes chapters by Maori teachers and others who worked with Sylvia, as well as recollections of her son, Elliot Henderson. It reprints her Teaching Scheme that was originally published in New Zealand in the 1950s. And it celebrates her novels as brilliant and angry evocations of life in the wildness of New Zealand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Figurines dating from prehistory have been found across the world but have never before been considered globally. The Oxford Handbook of Prehistoric Figurines is the first book to offer a comparative survey of this kind, bringing together approaches from across the landscape of contemporary research into a definitive resource in the field. The volume is comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible, with dedicated and fully illustrated chapters covering figurines from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australasia and the Pacific laid out by geographical location and written by the foremost scholars in figurine studies; wherever prehistoric figurines are found they have been expertly described and examined in relation to their subject matter, form, function, context, chronology, meaning, and interpretation. Specific themes that are discussed by contributors include, for example, theories of figurine interpretation, meaning in processes and contexts of figurine production, use, destruction and disposal, and the cognitive and social implications of representation. Chronologically, the coverage ranges from the Middle Palaeolithic through to areas and periods where an absence of historical sources renders figurines 'prehistoric' even though they might have been produced in the mid-2nd millennium AD, as in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The result is a synthesis of invaluable insights into past thinking on the human body, gender, identity, and how the figurines might have been used, either practically, ritually, or even playfully.

Book excerpt: Everyone loves a ghost story - especially if it is true. 'Ghost Hunter' Paul Gater recounts here how far more people than is realized have encountered ghostly soldiers - from Roman to Roundhead, red-coat to mud-stained 'Tommy' from WWI or the phantom pilot from WW2. Evidence suggests that many linger not only as individuals but en mass, shocked, deeply traumatized, their spirits trapped by fear and terror that still haunts the sites of old battlefields from many periods throughout history. Roman soldiers 'still on duty'; Viking warriors and Norman knights protecting their land; princes and kings; ghostly replays that have taken place of events during and after both the English and American Civil Wars and the two great World Wars - all can be found in this thrilling collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ghost of a scuba diver who still haunts the former British Columbia powerhouse where he met his death. An Alberta theatre where entities have been seen, heard, and even felt so often that it deserves to be called one of the most haunted sites in North America. The spirit of a dapper young man who is willing to share the second floor of a Saskatchewan museum—as long as the employees don't linger after working hours. The ghostly nun who still occupies the third floor of a former Manitoba convent and has a strange way of making her presence known. The very frightening "Captain High Liner," who took a special interest in one family living in his old seaside house. In his latest book in a series of western ghost story collections, Spirits of the West, Robert C. Belyk relates the stories of ghosts, both friendly and fearful, who haunt museums, hotels, pubs, houses, and many other locations throughout western Canada. These true stories will persuade the reader to turn on one more light during the long, dark night.
