Book excerpt: General von Falkenhayn, who served as Chief of the German General Staff during the First World War, discusses in detail the decisions he and his colleagues in the military command took between 1914 and 1916. Writing with exacting detail and an appreciation for the conditions on the various fronts on which the German army fought, Falkenhayn is frank in his assessments of Germany's capacities, successes and failures. When the war commenced in 1914, he was all too aware that large swathes of German forces were unprepared, ill-equipped and ill-trained: adaptation to the realities of modern war had to be swift. The rapid descent of the Western Front into the stagnation of trench warfare, whereby both sides were locked in continual combat with little movement, is amply detailed. Accompanying Falkenhayn's detailed accounts of the war are several maps, which detail the shifting conditions in the various battlefronts. Changes in conflict owing to new technologies, such as the aeroplane and the submarine, are likewise discussed, alongside attempts at achieving a breakthrough to decisively turn the tide of war in Germany's favour. In all, Falkenhayn's recounting is valuable for its attention to detail and the privileged position of the author at the apex of the military command structure.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German War Book: Being "the Usages of War on Land" Issued by the Great General Staff of the German Army; Translated With a Critical Introduction Our war-book is more discreet but not more merciful. Private property, it begins by saying, Should always be respected. To take a man's property when he is present is robbery when he is absent it is downright burglary. But if the necessity Of war makes it advisable, every sequestration, every appropriation, temporary or permanent, every use, every injury and all destruction are permissible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General Staff and Its Problems, Vol. 1: The History of the Relations Between the High Command and the German Imperial Government as Revealed by Official Documents In "My War Memories" I gave a connected description of the events of the World War, so far as they are associated with the names of Field-Marshal von Hindenburg and myself. Even at that stage I had decided to publish records bearing on the subject in order to enlighten the world as to the thoughts and actions of the Supreme Command, its sphere of labour and dealings with the Imperial Chancellor, as well as to substantiate what I said in my memoirs by documentary evidence. What I am giving now is a series of significant documents drawn from existing originals. At the time a good deal of the negotiation was carried on by word of mouth but it was always along the same lines as are revealed in the written records. From my sphere of activity as Director of the Concentration Section of the Great General Staff I have taken the letters which form Chapter I. in order to show what great pains the General Staff took to build up the army of the German Empire and enable it to face the coming war in a military sense. My object in reproducing diplomatic documents, though some of them are already known, is to bring home to every German that a peace of understanding was unattainable, and to reveal how much was kept secret from the Supreme Command by the Imperial Government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brain of an Army Six years ago a Royal Commission, under the presidency of Lord Hartington, was known to be inquiring into the administration of the national defence. There was much talk in the newspapers about the Prussian staff, and many were the advocates of its imitation in this country. Very few of those who took part in the discussions seemed to know what the Prussian staff was and I thought it might be useful to the Royal Commission and to the public to have a true account of that institution, written in plain English, so that any one could understand it. The essay was published on the nth of February, 1890, the day on which the Report of Lord Hartingtons Commission was signed. The essential feature of the Prussian staff system consists in the classification of duties out of which it has arisen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Great and Urgent Imperial Service investigates the reasons behind Great Britain’s combined military and naval offensive expeditions of Europe during the Great War. These campaigns have been branded by various historians as unnecessary sideshows to the conflict waged on the European continent. Pattee argues that the various campaigns were necessary adjuncts to the war in Europe, and fulfilled an important strategic purpose by protecting British trade where it was most vulnerable. Since international trade was essential for maintaining the island nation’s way of life, Great Britain required freedom of the seas in order to maintain its global trade. While the German High Seas Fleet constituted a serious threat that placed the British coast at grave risk, forcing the Royal Navy to concentrate in home waters, the importance of the island empire’s global trade made it a valuable and vulnerable target to Germany’s various commerce raiders—as Admiral Tirpitz’s risk theory had anticipated.
