We are so focused on the products of the camera, the indelible images marking our lives and times, that it's easy to forget the instrument itself has a history. Now that history has been comprehensively traced for photography buffs and amateurs alike by Todd Gustavson, Curator of Technology at George Eastman House. In this ... volume, hundreds of new and archival images from George Eastman House bring the story to life and provide an unmatched reference source. Book excerpt: When George Eastman decided to make photography his hobby, "simple" was hardly the word to describe the pastime. He had to lug 50 pounds of camera equipment around with him, including the fragile glass plates that would become pictures. But resourceful George wasn't one to put up with such inconvenience for long. Click! is the story of how George Eastman developed a camera simple enough for anyone to use—the Kodak, predecessor of today's pocket instamatics—and forever revolutionized photography.

Book excerpt: From her hand-colored, machine-stitched photographic prints to her artist’s books and well-known Mountain Dream Tarot card deck, the first-known photographic treatment of the tarot, Bea Nettles’s work has always upended tradition. Bea Nettles: Harvest of Memory presents the span of her art across half a century, in conjunction with an exhibition co-organized by the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, and the Sheldon Art Galleries in St. Louis, Missouri. Recognized for her innovations in mixed-media photography, Nettles used alternative photographic processes that produced textured works with subjects including self-portraits; investigations of the body and its relationship to nature and landscape; and the experience of mothering, loss, and aging. A tremendously productive artist, Nettle’s work has received critical acclaim, and been acquired into the permanent collections of museums coast to coast. Now, for the first time in her fifty-year career, Bea Nettles: Harvest of Memory offers a large-scale retrospective, tracing the journey of an artist who profoundly illuminates our inner worlds.

Featuring nearly 100 masterworks from one of the most important private holdings of photography, the book includes works by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Walker Evans, László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, and Cindy Sherman, as well as a diverse group of important lesser-known practitioners. A fascinating interview with Ann Tenenbaum provides a personal account of the works, while the main text offers an essential history of photography that addresses the implications of calling this period the medium’s “last” century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, the George Eastman Museum approached a group of photographers to ask for their favorite recipes and food-related photographs to go with them, in pursuit of publishing a cookbook. Playing off George Eastman's own famous recipe for lemon meringue pie, as well as former director Beaumont Newhall's love of food, the cookbook grew from the idea that photographers' talent in the darkroom must also translate into special skills in the kitchen. The recipes do not disappoint, with Robert Adams' Big Sugar Cookies, Ansel Adams' Poached Eggs in Beer, Richard Avedon's Royal Pot Roast, Imogen Cunningham's Borscht, William Eggleston's Cheese Grits Casserole, Stephen Shore's Key Lime Pie Supreme and Ed Ruscha's Cactus Omelette, to name a few. The book was never published, and the materials have remained in George Eastman Museum's collection ever since. Now, nearly 40 years later, this extensive and distinctive archive of untouched recipes and photographs is published in The Photographer's Cookbook for the first time. The book provides a time capsule of contemporary photographers of the 1970s--many before they made a name for themselves--as well as a fascinating look at how they depicted food, family and home, taking readers behind the camera and into the hearts and stomachs of some of photography's most important practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping book, which was first published in 1927, preserves a series of letters written by the author, George Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company. The letters chronicle Eastman’s adventures on a hunting trip into the interior of Africa that he made during the summer of 1926 with Daniel E. Pomeroy and Dr. Audley D. Stewart. The party departed New York for the African continent on March 13, 1926. Landing at Mombasa, they proceeded to Nairobi, where they established headquarters, making from there various long trips into the hunting regions of the interior. Stewart and Eastman returned to Rochester on October 24, 1926. During this trip, Eastman also met Martin and Osa Johnson, the American adventurers and documentary filmmaker couple that captured the public’s imagination through their films and books of adventure in exotic, faraway lands in the first half of the 20th century. The couple were on a four-year expedition to track the lion across Kenyan veld to his lair, footage of which was later used to make their 1928 black-and-white silent documentary film, Simba: The King of the Beasts. Beautifully illustrated throughout with photographs taken on the trip.

A banker by trade, his determination to improve and simplify his weekend hobby led to discovering cutting-edge photographic technology and the birth of his own business. A shrewd and principled businessman, he was a pioneer in customer service, employee relations, and worldwide product distribution. A generous philanthropist, his donations helped build universities, improve healthcare, and advance scientific research. His fascinating journey is deftly chronicled in George Eastman: Bringing Photography to the People, where readers will be inspired by a man whose invention and passion improved the lives of millions of people and the pictures they took.
