Book excerpt: This report describes the functionality of the Geophysical Data Fusion System (GDFS), which is a software system designed for use in support of environmental remediation studies at United States Air Force bases. Specifically, this report provides a detailed description of the version of GDFS which has been implemented at Maxwell Federal Division's Reston, Virginia Geophysics Office and installed on a UNIX workstation at the Phillips Laboratory facility at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. This prototype system is directed toward a specific application to the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) located on Cape Cod, and incorporates a wide variety of site specific environmental and geotechnical data, as well as selected geophysical analysis modules. Access to these data and analysis capabilities is provided via a graphical user interface operating off of a SPOT(registered) satellite image of western Cape Cod. An overview of the functionality of the software is presented in the main body of the text; installation and startup instructions, a sample session and a comprehensive system reference are presented in Appendices.

Book excerpt: A geophysical data fusion methodology is under development to combine data from complementary geophysical sensors and incorporate geophysical understanding to obtain three dimensional images of the subsurface. The research reported here is the first phase of a three phase project. The project focuses on the characterization of thin clay lenses (aquitards) in a highly stratified sand and clay coastal geology to depths of up to 300 feet. The sensor suite used in this work includes time-domain electromagnetic induction (TDEM) and near surface seismic techniques. During this first phase of the project, enhancements to the acquisition and processing of TDEM data were studied, by use of simulated data, to assess improvements for the detection of thin clay layers. Secondly, studies were made of the use of compressional wave and shear wave seismic reflection data by using state-of-the-art high frequency vibrator technology. Finally, a newly developed processing technique, called ''data fusion, '' was implemented to process the geophysical data, and to incorporate a mathematical model of the subsurface strata. Examples are given of the results when applied to real seismic data collected at Hanford, WA, and for simulated data based on the geology of the Savannah River Site.

Book excerpt: To prevent disastrous consequences imputed to levee breakage, assessment methodologies have to be improved. Geophysical and geotechnical investigation methods are usually used to make such assessments. However, the effective combination of these two specific types of data remains a challenge. We propose the fusion of geophysical and geotechnical data by means of Belief Functions. Here we demonstrate our approach on a synthetic case study including geophysical (electrical resistivity) and geotechnical (cone-bearing) data and by implementing Smets and PCR5 normalization rules. This new data combination approach allows the characterization of horizontal interfaces and of a geological structure initially hidden by the effects of a highly conductive body.

Book excerpt: Engineering projects such as siting waste facilities and performing remediation are often driven by geological and hydrogeological uncertainties. Geological understanding and hydrogeological parameters such as hydraulic conductivity are needed to achieve reliable engineering design. Information from non-invasive and minimally invasive data sets offers potential for reduction in uncertainty, but a single data type does not usually meet all needs. Data Fusion uses Bayesian statistics to update prior knowledge with information from diverse data sets as the data is acquired. Prior knowledge takes the form of first principles models (e.g., groundwater flow) and spatial continuity models for heterogeneous properties. The variability of heterogeneous properties is modeled in a form motivated by statistical physics as a Markov random field. A computer reconstruction of targets of interest is produced within a quantified statistical uncertainty. The computed uncertainty provides a rational basis for identifying data gaps for assessing data worth to optimize data acquisition. Further, the computed uncertainty provides a way to determine the confidence of achieving adequate safety margins in engineering design. Beyond design, Data Fusion provides the basis for real time computer monitoring of remediation. Working with the DOE Office of Technology (OTD), the author has developed and patented a Data Fusion Workstation system that has been used on jobs at the Hanford, Savannah River, Pantex and Fernald DOE sites. Further applications include an army depot at Letterkenney, PA and commercial industrial sites.

This will require a rapid and radical transformation of the world’s energy production and end use systems. The current generation of energy technologies are not capable of achieving the level of mitigation required. Next generations of renewable, low carbon generation and end use technologies will be needed. This book quantifies the mitigation challenge. It then considers the status of key technologies needed to protect the planet from serious climate change impact. Current and emerging technologies are characterized for their mitigation potential, status of development and potential environmental impacts. Power generation, mobile sources, industrial and building sectors are evaluated in detail. The importance and unique challenges for rapidly developing countries, such as China and India are discussed. Current global research and development efforts for key technologies are discussed. It is concluded that it will be necessary to substantially upgrade and accelerate the current worldwide RDD&D effort on both emerging energy technologies and those enabling technologies needed to improve mitigation effectiveness and economics.
