At the base Of the formation there is sometimes a conglomerate. The sandstone varies from rock that it quite firm to loose sand which is barely consolidated and is frequently so soft as to be readily excavated with a pick. Fossil leaves are very abun dant in places and the flora of the Dakota sandstone includes no less than 450 species Of plants. The thickness of the sandstone varies widely at different points but it is seldom more than 500 feet and is commonly less.
