Book excerpt: This best selling textbook focuses on the changes in geographical patterns that have taken place in recent years i.e. on the geographical pattern of recent and current economic change. The area covered includes the countries lying between the limits of the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. In this second edition substantial changes have been made in every chapter in order to keep up to date in respect of both the geographical pattern of development and prevailing attitudes towards it. The discussion is still largely confined to the twenty year period between 1956 and 1976, and to the economic component of development

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines development issues, particularly spatial integration, in Sub-Saharan Africa regarding its tropical timber trade, and the related formal-informal operational turf creation, control and dynamics. Focusing primarily on Ghana, Owusu examines the scramble to control the timber trade by various political and socio-economic interests, from the colonial to the neo-liberal era. In relation to this, Owusu documents the structural and organizational changes that have occurred in the region resulting from national and international development policies, such as modernization and neo-liberal structural adjustment on industrialization and development, and assesses the roles played by powerful international organizations such as The World Bank as agents of economic change. The discussion is couched in the critical but often unrecognized or neglected role the discipline of geography and its associated perspectives play in relation to examining and understanding the unequal relationship between the advanced and developing economies, and how that relationship affects development and trade behavior of developing economies. The core argument made regarding this relationship is tied to the structuralist perspective that Africa's persistent underdevelopment problem is rooted in the very structure of its political economy. Based on the discussion, Owusu identifies and distills lessons from Ghana's experience for Development policy and practice in Africa and comparable Developing countries in the 21st Century.

Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Africa examines the varied pattern of development in the continent, the progress and the disappointments experienced, and the prospects. This picture is set firmly within the frame of the continent’s geography. From a general synthesis, the books moves to a country by country analysis of the interdependence of geography and economic development. The authors’ analysis of the effects of varied development strategies in Africa leads them, in the final section, to discuss what lessons maybe learned from these earlier initiatives and to assess the changes in development policies that were later implemented. This book will be of interest to students of geography, economics and development studies.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this volume is to build a different set of images of Africa: of African society characterized less by exotic cultures than by motivations and dynamics of change parallel to our own; of African landscapes not populated by herds of wild animals but as complex resources for sustaining societies; of African history in interaction with the world; of African development creating economic systems, social institutions, and spatial organizations increasingly like those found elsewhere; of perils and potentials for African change in the future. Here, Africa is portrayed through the eyes of scholars immersed in Africa and African studies." -- Preface, page ix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a group of researchers applying their insights and experience to a common theme. All the authors are con-cerned with rural development in Africa and all have focused on the con-nection between the development process and the arrangement of people and their built environment in rural space. Both anthropologists and geo-graphers have contributed to the dialogue on this subject and represen-tatives of the two disciplines are included in this volume. The members of this group have never all been in the same place at the same time, and so have utilized various electronic modes of commu-nication to link their locations around the world. Two conferences were organized, however, among a subset of the whole, in order to generate a group discussion. One of these meetings was a symposium on African rural development held at Temple University while a second was orga-nized at the African Studies Association Meetings in Toronto. Both opportunities helped raise issues that found their way into individual chapters. The audience in each case further stimulated our thinking.
