It is not the inten tion of the author in presenting this little hand-book to take up the subject in an exhaustive manner, for that would require a large volume. Nor is his intention to present a mere description of the various aspects of the geography of the State, for this has already been done, although in an inadequate manner, in various little school supplements and advertising pamphlets. Moreover, mere description cannot impart real geographic knowledge, since we must know something of causes and relations. The object which the author has in mind is rather to give a simple and yet detailed description of the conditions under which we are living, and weave them into a connected and rational whole, so that teachers and pupils may acquire the elements of a rational knowledge of California. As our work in geography is at present outlined it is ridiculously unphilosophical as well as thoroughly inadequate. The geography of California is extraordinarily varied and interesting. Children should not leave school without some elementary conceptions of the origin and meaning of the physical features about them, of the strongly contrasted climatic condi tions, and of the inﬂuence which these exert upon our lives. Upon each coast in the southern portion a system of mountain-chains follows the shore-line at a greater or less distance inland. Upon the Atlantic side this system, the Appalachian, begins in Northern Georgia, and extends continuously through the Carolinas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, finally disappearing in Northern Maine. It runs parallel to the coast, and at a distance of from two to three hundred miles inland. South of this line the land ceases, and the great heated body of the Gulf waters ex tends across the southern border of the continent, sending its modifying inﬂuence, borne by the Gulf winds, far inland along the open valley-way of the Mississippi. North of Central New York the chain begins to break down, leaving the country Open upon the north and west to the cold winds which sweep down from the polar seas, and from the great frozen plains which extend to the mouth of the Mackenzie. The northwesterly winds gather an increased harshness from the winter-chilled waters of the Great Lakes, across which they pass. About a year before the transfer Of the meteorological station to the Department Of Geography a cooperative Observer's shelter of the United States Weather Bureau pattern was set up on the grounds south of the Observatory, and Observations were begun with a duplicate set Of thermometers in the new location, the window shelter Observations being continued. A study of comparative readings under the two conditions of exposure was undertaken in order to determine the amount of correction to be applied to the valuable series Of window shelter observations, that they might be made available for use in connection with the Observa tions taken in the new and better location. Day-by-day results Of this comparison are unfortunately not available in sufficient numbers to permit a detailed study of the amounts of the differences. It was necessary for the purposes of this thirty-year synopsis, however, to determine these differences as accurately as possible. Inspection of the data at hand indicates that different weather conditions have had different effects on the readings in the two locations, sometimes causing them to show only slight differences, at other times greater differences, and that at isolated and irregular times individual differences have been considerably in excess of the average. It is clear that such excessive departures may exert an undue influence on the means of the departures. Being irregular and Often widely separated in point of time they/do not tend to neutralize each other. A large difference, occurring only once in a month and hence by no means typical of average conditions, may cause the mean difference to appear excessive. Taylor. See Appendix.to five thousand Indians each, who with their families were employed by the Jesuits in cultivating land or herding stock. They lived in plenty. The climate enabled them to grow not only the most valuable grains, but also sugar, figs, oranges, dates, and other tropical productions; while of cotton, they always raised sufficient to supply their wants in clothes. We search-in vain among the records of these people for accounts of those great drouths which are said to render the country incapable of culture. We find, on the contrary, that the fathers had a System of agriculture which was entirely reliable. They consulted with intelligence the characteristics of the country, and those very features which the impatient and the ignorant have reported as discouraging, were, turned to account and proven to be providential. The missions were usually planted on the hill sides so that they overlooked the valleys, and when the rains fell, contin gent water was secured by a system of enormous dams of stone, which were projected from hill to hill quite across the valleys, so as to back up the water in artificial streams till the next rain fell. These rude works were as creditable to the Jesuits of Lower California as were the aqueducts of Egypt and of Rome to the Pharoahs and the Caesars; and their ruins are to this day a rebuke to the present dero gate condition of the territory. The truth is, that Lower California, instead of being worthless or even undesirable, has simply retrogaded. Nevertheless, with all of its misfortunes, it is not today as desolate as the Roman Campagna, or as worthless as many of the once fertile districts of the Nile. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geographical Society of California: Special Bulletin Perhaps no question has so much perplexed the scientists of the past four hundred years as the vexed one of the origin of the Aztecs and the ancient and high civilization of Central America that confronted the Spanish conquerors on their arrival, and that up to the present period has received no satisfactory solution. It is therefore with great pleasure that this Society presents to the scientific world the following most valuable and scholarly paper of Mr. Johnston's which seems in a fair way to clear up the mystery which has so long shrouded this interesting region. In order that this desirable result may be attained we invite the co-operation of the learned in this and other countries and shall be happy to receive communications either throwing, light on the three absorbing topics embraced in this paper or inviting discussion on whatsoever points may appear doubtful, so that d'accord with Mr. Johnston we may be enabled to furnish such information as the vast fund of material which he has collected bearing on those topics can afford, and which he has hitherto abstained from utilizing in his work with a view to the attention of the reader not being diverted from the main issues by its length. In the meantime we venture to make a few remarks which may possibly be of some assistance in arriving at a decision with regard to the correctness of Mr. Johnston's theory. According to the traditions still existing amongst the Central Americans, and so much of the Aztec manuscript literature as escaped the destructive hands of the Spaniards and is to be found in the elaborate work of the Abbe Brasseur de Bourbourg, the earliest American civilization originated in Yucatan and the neighboring districts, a region which is amongst the most fertile in the New World. There, about 1000 B. C., Votan, the first of the American legislators, established himself, and Palenque, said to be the oldest city in Central America, was founded. He and his people evidently came from the West for it is stated that they found the whole coast from Darien to California occupied by a barbarous people, thus showing that their first discoveries were made on that, and not on the East side of the continent, at the same time that it will be apparent to any one acquainted with the geographical configuration of this region that this journey must have been undertaken in ships and not by land. Votan appears to have made four voyages to and from his original country and stated that in one of them he visited the "dwelling of the thirteen serpents" (Benares) as also the ruins of an old building which had been erected, by men for the purpose of reaching heaven. Now these four voyages would seem to correspond to an equal number of the joint ones of the Jews and Phoenicians, which, according to the best historic information, ceased with the death of Solomon - viz., in forty-five years, but at what period those of the Phoenicians, when undertaken alone, came to an end, it is impossible to determine with the limited knowledge at our disposal. We have here, however, facts which have long been within the scope and cognizance of the scientific world; the great difficulty consisted in ascertaining the nationality of the strangers who arrived on the west coast of America clad "in long flowing robes" and who had evidently visited Benares and the ruins of the Tower of Babel as above intimated. The identification of two stages of the voyage was thus established, but what were the intermediate ones? How were the vast intervening spaces traversed at a period when navigation was comparatively in its infancy? The solution of this difficulty seems to have been overcome by Mr. Johnston.
