Few would now advocate the formation of large granitic bodies by in situ transformation of pre-existing crust as the result of the passage of ichors without the formation of a granitic melt. To many geochemists fluid transport and metasomatism have become slightly suspect processes which at the most locally disturb the primary geochemical and isotopic signatures. While there is common agreement that there are marked differences in the composition of the lower and upper crust, the role of fluid movement as one of the controls of this differentiation is often neglected in favour of suggested primary differences in the composition of igneous rocks emplaced at different depths. Selective fluid transport however provides many geologists with their livelyhood. Without the secondary concentration of commercially important elements by fluids within the crust the mining industry, geological science and human activities based on their products would be very different.

Specifically, they focus on how organic ligands and nanoconfinement influence fluid-rock reaction processes and rates. It is important to understand these processes as CO2 and H2O are the two most abundant volatiles in the crust and strongly influence subsurface hydration and carbonation reactions. These processes have implications for natural and engineered settings, including geothermal systems, metamorphic aureoles, and carbon utilization and storage. These geochemical processes have the potential to alter hydrologic and geomechanical properties. In this dissertation, the reactivity of CO2-acidified brine and water-bearing supercritical CO2 with rocks was examined. Naturally-occurring organic ligands also play a role in CO2-H2O-rock interactions, as they have the potential to affect reaction rates and pathways. Lastly, properties of nanoconfined fluids differ from those of bulk fluids, which has implications for the reactivity of fluids in interpore chemical environments. Nanoconfined fluids are also important to understand because they are likely present at all mineral-water interfaces. The interaction of water with minerals surfaces induces ordering and the development of a nanoscale water phase. Chapters 2 through 4 concern the reaction of forsterite with water-bearing (wet) supercritical CO2 (scCO2). The carbonation reactions take place in an ~2 nm-thick interfacial water film that forms when water from the scCO2 partitions onto the forsterite. Chapter 2 focuses on how naturally-occurring organic ligands may be mobilized and transported by wet scCO2 to mineral interfaces, where they influence carbonation pathways. Chapters 3 and 4 continue this line of inquiry and delve into the underlying mechanism of how organic ligands influence mineral carbonation in interfacial water films. Chapter 5 focuses on how the water film thickness, or degree of nanoconfinement, influences forsterite carbonation rates, pathways, and energy barriers. This chapter places wet scCO2 investigations in a new context where they can provide insight into reactions in other confined environments, including pores, fractures, and grain boundaries. Chapter 6 concerns the aqueous geochemistry of the reaction of shale and CO2-acidified brine. In the context of the dissertation, shale is a naturally occurring, economically important, nanoporous, and organic-rich substrate. This chapter indicates that aqueous geochemistry correlates with fluid-rock reaction-induced pore network architecture reorganization. It has set the stage for ongoing and future work that will provide insight into coupled physicochemical processes.

The reconstruction of past vegetation from the examination of ancient pollen records thus can be used to characterize the nature of past landscapes (e.g. abundance of forests vs. grasslands), provide insights into changes in biodiversity, and gain empirical evidence of vegetation response to climatic change and human activity. In this, the 35th Volume of "Palaeoecology of Africa", we bring together new data and extensive synthetic reviews to provide novel insights into the relationships between human evolution, human activity, climate change and vegetation dynamics during the Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years. Current and ongoing climate and land-use change is exerting pressure on modern vegetation formations and threatening the livelihoods and wellbeing of many peoples in Africa. In this book the focus is on the Quaternary because it is during this geological period that the modern vegetation formations developed into their current configurations against a backdrop of high magnitude global climate change (glacial-interglacial cycles), human evolution, and a growing human land-use footprint. In this book the latest information is presented and collated from around the African continent to parameterize past vegetation states, identify the drivers of vegetation change, and assess the vegetation resilience to change. To achieve this research from two broad themes are covered: (i) the present is the key to the past (i.e. studies which improve our understanding of modern environments so that we can better interpret evidence from the past), and (ii) the past is the key to the future (i.e. studies which unlock information on how and why vegetation changed in the past so one can better anticipate trajectories of future change). This Open Access book will provide a strong foundation for future research exploring past ecological, environmental and climatic change within Africa and the surrounding islands. The book is organized regionally (covering western, eastern, central, and southern Africa) and it contains specialized articles focused on particular topics (such as modern pollen-vegetation relationships and fire as a driver of vegetation change), as well as regional and pan-African syntheses drawing together decades of research to assess key scientific questions (including the role of climate in driving vegetation change and the role of vegetation change in human evolution).
