Book Synopsis The Gentle Revolutionaries by : Don Lord
Download or read book The Gentle Revolutionaries written by Don Lord and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gentle Revolutionaries is a novel based on the lives of two prominent American missionaries, Dan and Emelie Bradley, who became close friends with the famous monk, later King Mongkut. They arrived in Thailand (Siam) in 1835 and made significant contributions to Thailand's medical, social and intellectual history. Their diaries and letters, as well as the Thai's evaluation of them, destroys the false image of Thailand an English writer had created. The Bradleys and their missionary coworkers came from New York's "Burned Over District," famous for its policy of accepting women as social equals. Thai nobles basically treated missionary women as their husbands did, respectfully and warmly. Anna Leonowens, who served as an English teacher for the children and wives of King Mongkut, later fabricated two novels about him that were bestsellers. Unfortunately, these books were innocently used as the basis for Margaret Landon's novel, Anna and the King of Siam, which was made into successful Broadway and Hollywood musicals. The Thai and the missionaries were so close that two missionaries negotiated Thailand's treaties with the United States and England. Missionaries also led the battle against smallpox and inspired the Thai to replace their antiquated educational system with one similar to Western schools. The best example of the Thai/missionary mutual respect came when an American ambassador to Thailand was shocked to discover at a royal dinner with King Chulalongkorn, that not he, but a missionary wife sat at the right hand of the king.
Download or read book The Gentle Craft written by Simon Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it was probably conceived as a trilogy, only the first two parts of Thomas Deloney's prose romance were completed, dealing with the origins of the shoemaker's trade and how it succeeded in London. The Gentle Craft is best known as the principal source of Thomas Dekker's The Shoemaker's Holiday. But Deloney's tale of Simon Eyre, who founded Leadenhall, the centre of the leather trade, and rose to be Lord Mayor of London, is itself significant for its adaptation of euphemistic romances and jestbooks. In this volume the author offers in modern typography, with explanatory notes and an extensive introduction, an account of the sources and influence of the book, its publication history and what is known of its author. He suggests that Deloney's combination of romance with the practical morality of an emerging social class produced a text that is uniquely important for those interested in late-Elizabethan popular culture.

Book Synopsis The Gentle Parenting Book by : Sarah Ockwell-Smith
Download or read book The Gentle Parenting Book written by Sarah Ockwell-Smith and published by Piatkus. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting trends come and go. Gentle parenting is different - it isn't a label for a precise set of rules but a method of parenting that embraces the needs of parent and child, while being mindful of current science and child psychology. It means parenting with empathy, respect, understanding - and boundaries. In The Gentle Parenting Book, Sarah Ockwell-Smith provides a trustworthy combination of what-to-expect information and gentle-parenting solutions to the most common challenges faced by parents with young children. Sarah addresses a wide variety of topics, including coping with a crying baby, introducing solid foods and creating healthy eating habits, potty training, starting nursery and school, sibling rivalry, tantrums, whining and sulking, aggressive behaviour and much more. And for those parents who have previously used a more authoritarian style of parenting, there's plenty of advice - and reassurance - on making the transition to a gentler approach. For many, gentle parenting comes as a relief because it chimes with their deepest instincts about the best way to raise their children.
