Book excerpt: We study the effect of feedback about relative performance on the choice to compete, and the demand for that feedback, using an experiment where participants can choose between piece rate and tournament compensation for simple addition tasks. The experiment was conducted in a shopping mall with 885 adults with wide demographic variation. We replicate the gender gap in competitive choices in this large and diverse sample. We find that providing free feedback about relative performance does not affect the overall gender gap, but does affect the choices to compete by gender and ability. When feedback is costly, females are less likely to buy it than are men, and the reduction in the competitive choice gender gap for high ability individuals is smaller than when feedback is costless. The gender gap in feedback demand varies with age and confidence.

Book excerpt: We use a controlled experiment widely adopted in the literature to assess the extent of gender differences in attitudes towards competition in a sample of UK professionals working in two different companies. We find no gender differences in attitudes towards competition nor in performance under a competitive reward scheme. This results qualifies the findings of a large number of experimental studies that show that women are more likely than men to shy away from competition. We also find that, in our sample of professionals, women's performance under competitive schemes does not decline. We conclude that it is important to avoid generalisations on the presence of gender gaps in attitudes towards competition. This being the first field study with professional workers in relatively competitive sectors, we think more needs to be carried out.

Book excerpt: Gender differences in competitiveness have been suggested as an explanation for the observed dearth of women in highly-ranked positions within firms. In this paper we ask: could a price mechanism be used to achieve gender balance? Our results show that if the rewards to competition are sufficiently large, women are willing to compete as much as men and will win as many competitions as men. Nonetheless, while entry increases, it is not enough to reduce average wage cost. Given the proportion of men and women willing to enter the competition at various prizes, firms whose objective is to minimize their costs would not voluntarily chose prizes which allow them to attract a balanced workforce. Hence markets forces would not be sufficient to achieve gender parity. Our experimental design also allows us to propose a new measure for competitiveness that incorporates the fact that incentives change participants' willingness to compete, namely the minimum prize at which participants chose to enter a tournament. We find that women choose to enter at significantly higher minimum prizes and that only a small fraction of the initial gender gap can be attributed to performance, beliefs, and general factors such as risk and feedback aversion. Thus, even though for some prizes women behave as competitively as men, women nevertheless are less competitive than men.

In the experiment subjects can either continue or drop out of an environment that involves ego-relevant feedback and solely rewards high performance. I find that men are on average 10 percentage points (15%) more likely to continue than women who performed equally well and received the same feedback. This gender gap in persistence can not be explained by preferences for competition or risk. Instead, I detect two novel mechanisms: First, men are more confident about their future performance even when compared to women who are similarly confident about their past performance - both in the experiment and a classroom field study. Second, experimental findings suggest that men seek, while women avoid exposure to additional feedback. Together, these mechanisms can explain roughly two-thirds of the gender gap in persistence.

Book excerpt: Previous experimental evidence has documented that competition may enhance the performance of male subjects relative to female subjects in some tasks. In these studies competition in wages is imposed exogenously by the experimenter. This note describes data for a task where a simple agency relationship is established in the laboratory between two groups of agents, managers and workers. The managers make the compensation choice for the worker from either a non-competitive piece rate or the competitive tournament payment scheme. The results show that even though male subjects are better at the task this advantage dissipates when the competitive compensation scheme is chosen for them by the manager. Evidence also suggests that the gender of the manager may be an important facet of the agency relationship.
