Book excerpt: When a twentieth-century archeologist discovers a sacred altar at the abandoned, overgrown ruins of Machu Picchu in 1920, he vanishes from the site just as the solstice sun strikes the altar at a precise momentactivating an ageless gateway into another time. Joseph Bennett is never seen again. Seventy-two years later, Bennetts disappearance sparks the interest of his great-grandson, Christopher Giordano. Equipped only with Josephs journal, Christopher travels to Machu Picchu, determined to solve the mystery that has plagued his family for three generations. In retracing his great-grandfathers last steps, Christopher discovers the ancient altar and finds himself hurled back five hundred years to an Inca civilization on the brink of annihilation. Yet it is here that he meets Shama, an extraordinary Inca Priestess; together they discover a love so powerful that he is torn between his two worlds in two infinitely different centuries. As Christopher and Shama find themselves caught up in the rituals, power plays, and the disintegration of Inca society, Christopher must decide whether to stay in the sixteenth century or return to his family in present time. But is it even possible to return? His choice will determine whether he and Shama live or die.

Book excerpt: The Gateway is divided into two main parts. Part One: Takes place primarily in the town of Evergreen. Sarah DeWinter is a young, athletic college student just finishing up her last year of college and is looking forward to her summer job working as an assistant manager in a bookstore. There is to be great excitement this summer because Walter O'Bannon, past resident of Evergreen college, is finishing up his American book tour at the very book store Sarah has worked in since high school. O'Bannon is a highly popular, incredibly eccentric, and peculiarly mysterious fantasy writer. He has reached cult status among high school and young college readers. O'Bannon's publisher, Valiant Quest, kicks off the book tour with the usual press coverage all to showcase O'Bannon's newest epic novel. The book tour is tied into VQuest's Renaissance Festivals and sponsored theatrical productions - all financially lucrative endeavors to VQuest. To heighten the release of the book, a type of lottery is marketed. Wax sealed scrolls with random numbers inscribed are sent prior to each bookstore/festival and theater box office scheduled in O'Bannon's tour. The prize to the holder of the winning scroll is a coveted leather bound copy of O'Bannon's book. There is also a mystery surrounding the book tour: the strange disappearances of young people nearly every where O'Bannon makes an appearance. O'Bannon finally arrives in Evergreen. He is intent and insistent on visiting the city park. The object he is adamant about is the "Evergreen henge"; the focal point of the park. The henge is a stone oddity - prized by some as art and despised by others who label it an eyesore. Devoted fans flock to the book store with hopes of receiving the special edition novel. The tour ends on an anti-climatic note and Sarah is rather relieved. Yet there is still something not right, something that still disturbs Sarah. That evening Sarah is in the park and is pursued by unknown stalkers.

Book excerpt: New competitive realities have ruptured industry boundaries, overthrown much of standard management practice, and rendered conventional models of strategy and growth obsolete. In their stead have come the powerful ideas and methodologies of Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad, whose much-revered thinking has already engendered a new language of strategy. In this book, they develop a coherent model for how today's executives can identify and accomplish no less than heroic goals in tomorrow's marketplace. Their masterful blueprint addresses how executives can ease the tension between competing today and clearing a path toward leadership in the future.

Book excerpt: Classic stories of science fiction featuring powered armor: Tales from the Golden Age through the current era featuring military, police, and civilians utilizing powered armor. Stories by Joe Haldeman, Christopher Ruocchio, Jason Cordova, and more! MEN, MACHINES, AND TOMORROW’S BATTLEFIELDS War is planned violence . . . or, at least, it starts out that way. And even if plans go awry, the violence is indispensable. Today’s soldiers have far more firepower on a per-man basis than the doughboys of a century ago, and there is no reason to believe that this trend will not extend into the future. Imagine a revival of suits of armor, but with structural strength undreamed of by medieval knights, and powered by built-in motors, giving each soldier the invulnerability of a tank, but even more mobility, and mechanical muscle strong enough to carry light artillery, rocket launchers, laser cannon, and weapons not even on the drawing boards yet. Add on the ability to fly, or at least jump for a kilometer at a time, using rocket boosters, or even powerful leg motors, or a combination of both. The stuff that superheroes are made of, hanging in every fighting man or woman’s closet, ready to wear. If it’s possible, history teaches us, it will be done. But don’t expect a nation or planet possessing such battalions of super-powered soldiers to not worry about attack by an enemy . . . there’s no reason why the enemy won’t have its own armored infantry. Keep the midnight oil burning and the R&D rolling. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek by expert dreamers putting the battle-hardened reader at the sharp end of tomorrow. At the publisher’s request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). Praise for anthologies edited by Hank Davis and David Afsharirad: “This intriguing anthology explores the human race’s violent potential [but] also bends toward exploration and the triumph of the human spirit, with brave tales [that] take the reader on a fascinating, thoughtprovoking, enjoyable journey . . . ” —Publishers Weekly on The Year’s Best Military SF and Space Opera, starred review

Book excerpt: A spellbinding exploration of the human capacity to imagine the future Our ability to think about the future is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. In The Invention of Tomorrow, cognitive scientists Thomas Suddendorf, Jonathan Redshaw, and Adam Bulley argue that its emergence transformed humans from unremarkable primates to creatures that hold the destiny of the planet in their hands. Drawing on their own cutting-edge research, the authors break down the science of foresight, showing us where it comes from, how it works, and how it made our world. Journeying through biology, psychology, history, and culture, they show that thinking ahead is at the heart of human nature—even if we often get it terribly wrong. Incisive and expansive, The Invention of Tomorrow offers a fresh perspective on the human tale that shows how our species clawed its way to control the future.

Book excerpt: "Cape Town's Foreshore has been a site of contestation for much of the twentieth century. Conventional accounts of its history describe the sudden reclamation of land in 1937, and subsequent planning throughout the 1940s and 50s. However, these accounts do not take into account the complex nature of these developments. South African urban history has tended to view town planning as an apartheid spatial practice - highlighting an over-emphasis on race that has tried to make a case for 'South African exceptionalism'. This thesis attempts to fill the lacuna on histories of Cape Town, providing a comprehensive, indepth narrative of the development of the Foreshore, and its subsequent impact on most of Cape Town's built form - the most infamous of these are the 'lost highways' of the Table Bay flyovers. It will also challenge the dominant narrative of South African planning belonging to the Corbusian tradition, instead arguing that there is a clear convergence of the City Beautiful movement with that of High Modernism. In attempting to understand the complex forces that shaped Cape Town, a thorough understanding of the particular context of the early twentieth century and the debates around town planning and the reconstruction of cities is essential. These had a direct influence on the contested visions of the city that were advocated by the Cape elite, and were influenced by British and American ideas of town planning and architecture, negotiated in a local context, and employed by a variety of actors that came from both local and international contexts. These networks of ideas highlight the transnational influence of town planning as it plays out on the Foreshore. Through the particular South African context of the time, the space of the Foreshore became layered with a political ideology that affirmed white South African ownership of the space and marked the rise of Afrikaner nationalism and capital. This 'Afrikanerisation' of the Foreshore will be shown in the various
