Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas and Oil Engine In this edition special attention has been paid to the oil engine, in view of its rapid rate of present development and the probability of its very extensive use for many new purposes, such as motor cars. Many engineers are now paying attention to the oil engine, to whom the subject is unfamiliar and in the hope of proving useful to such new men on the work, the author has gone caref'ully into the discussion of the chemical nature of petroleum and the different methods of vaporising heavy oils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Vol. 2 The first volume of the new edition of this work was published in 1909, so that three years have been spent in the preparation of the present volume, which deals with practical problems of design, con struction and operation of Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engines. The author has been fortunate in securing the co-operation of Mr. G. A. Burls, in collecting information and writing the book. Chapters I, II, V and XII are by the author Chapters VII, VIII, IX and XI are by Mr. Burls while Chapters III, IV, VI and X are in great part the work of Mr. Burls. The whole work, however, has been the subject of joint discussion, and the book as it now stands correctly represents the opinions of both writers. The aim throughout all the chapters has been the comparison of early and late constructions and the discussion of various problems which have appeared in the course of the development of the various types of engine since the introduction of the Otto cycle in 1876. Chapters I and II deal broadly with the development of four and two-stroke engines, and describe various difficulties which have been encountered and partially overcome; results of operation are given and various tests are dealt with both in the works and in practical Operation in factories. Chapter III deals with igniting arrangements, and describes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods used, tracing the development which has demonstrated the supremacy of electrical ignition in its best forms. Chapter IV describes governors and governing methods as practised on the Continent and in England and America. The Editor therefore hopes that this little volume will be especially welcome to non-technical readers who like to keep ahead Of the times in matters Of such universal importance. One chapter deals exclusively with the theory of the gas engine, but the non-technical mind Should have no fear, for mathematics have been as far as possible avoided. It may also serve to dispel wrongful notions concerning the practical limits of the efficiency of gas engines which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise: On Modern Gas and Oil Engines In 1838 Barnett made practical use of the principle of compression by constructing a single-acting motor cylinder, at each side of which was placed a gas and air pump. The three pistons moved simultaneously in the same directions the gas and air pumps delivered into a receiver, from which communication was made to the motor cylinder as the charge was ignited. Barnett afterwards constructed double acting engines, but with less success. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cycles of Gas and Oil Engines The words internal combustion engines contain a fairly approximate descriptive definition of gas, oil, and Spirit engines 3 and for the later period of these motors - for the whole may be conveniently divided into two periods, that before and that subsequent to the introduction of the Otto engines - this title is possibly the best that can be devised, yet as these words will necessarily include gunpowder, gun-cotton, and all similar fulminating engines, it is not sufficiently accurate for a work upon the cycles of these motors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas, Gasoline and Oil Engines: Including Complete Gas Engine Glossary AS the soot and monoxide have a calorific value it is evident that much of the heat Of the fuel is wasted if they are exhausted from the cylinder without further burning at the end of the stroke. To gain every possible heat unit it is necessary to fur: nish sufficient oxygen or air to reduce the fuel to its lowest state. As the free oxygen and nitrogen contained in the fuel are without fuel value, their rejection from the cylinder oc casions no loss except for that heat which they take from the cylinder by virtue Of their high temperature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Care and Repair of Gas and Oil Engines It may be said, in a general way, that any gas engine which has proper compression and receives the proper mixture of fuel and air from its carburetor, and, in addition, ignites this mixture at the proper time, and the moving parts of which, including the inside of the cylinder and the outside of the piston, are properly lubricated, will run and will develop the power it is intended to develop. When anything goes wrong with any of these conditions, the engine will give trouble, and it is the purpose of the following chapters to ex plain how these troubles may be avoided or remedied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Gas, Oil, and Air Engines One reason which may account for the great develop ment Of gas and Oil motors, besides their convenience and absence of a boiler, is their much larger thermal efficiency, as compared with that of steam engines. The best modern compound or triple steam motors, using 120 to lbs. Steam pressure, working with about the same piston speed as gas engines, give from 10 to 15 per cent. Heat efficiency; in other words, Of the total heat given to the engine, some 12 per cent. Only is converted into indicated work. With gas it is sometimes as much as 28 per cent; more Often. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Vol. 1: Thermodynamics of the Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Together With Historical Sketch Explosion and Cooling of Gaseous mixtures in large and small vessels and at initial pressures of atmosphere and above. Chapter VIII. Deals for the first time in any work on the subject with Explosion and Cooling in a Cylinder behind a Moving Piston. The recent work by the author enables approximate values to be arrived at for cooling within the internal-combustion Engine Cylinder, apart from tem perature fall due to work done. The last chapter, Chapter IX., discusses the Thermal and Mechanical Efficiency of all the different types of gas engine in use. On this part of the subject more accurate knowledge exists than at any previous time. Important work has been done by English, American, and Continental investigators, and the Research Committees of the Institutions of Civil and Mechanical Engineers have made experiments of great value. All this work has been fully discussed in this chapter. In the present volume the author has attempted to systematise the knowledge existing as to the properties of the working fluid of the Intemal - Combustion Engine, whether using gas, petrol, or heavy oil, so as to enable the engineer and inventor to consider not only mechanical modifications of engine construction, but more profound alterations possible by varying the actions going on in the working fluid. Such variations are, in the author's opinion, necessary to enable light and powerful internal-combustion Engines to be developed for marine work. For this purpose it is necessary that the engineer should be thoroughly familiar with the properties of the working fluid with which he is dealing.
