Book Synopsis The Future of International Courts by : Avidan Kent
Download or read book The Future of International Courts written by Avidan Kent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of World War II marked the beginning of a new golden era in international law. Treaties and international organisations proliferated at an unprecedented rate, and many courts and tribunals were established with a view to ensuring the smooth operation of this new universe of international relations. The network of courts and tribunals that exists today is an important feature of our global society. It serves as an alternative to other, sometimes more violent, forms of dispute settlement. The process of international adjudication is constantly evolving, sometimes in unexpected ways. Through contributions from world-renowned experts and emerging voices, this book considers the future of international courts from a diverse range of perspectives. It examines some of the regional, institutional and procedural challenges that international courts face: the rising influence of powerful states, the turn to populism, the interplay between courts, the involvement of non-state actors and third parties in international proceedings, and more. The book offers a timely discussion of these challenges, with the future of several international courts hanging in the balance and the legitimacy of international adjudication being called constantly into question. It should also serve as a reminder of the importance of international courts for the functioning of a rules-based international order. ‘The Future of International Courts’ is essential reading for academics, practitioners and students who are interested in international law, including those who are interested in the role international courts play in international relations.

Download or read book Fixing the Future written by Bruce Little and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1993, most Canadians believed that big government deficits were permanent and that the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) was in such deep trouble that younger Canadians would never collect a retirement pension. They believed too that Canada's politicians were incapable of dealing with either problem. Yet by 1998, both were essentially solved. While the deficit battles have been recounted many times, the story of the reform that rescued the CPP has gone almost entirely untold. In Fixing the Future, Bruce Little explains the CPP overhaul and shows why it stands as one of Canada's most significant public policy success stories, in part because it demanded an almost unparalleled degree of federal-provincial co-operation. Providing an overview of the CPP's entire history from its beginning in 1965, Little pulls together published, and new unpublished, material relating to the CPP reform, and interviews over fifty politicians, government officials, and others who were deeply involved in the reforms for their recollections, insights, and observations. A superbly told history of one of Canada's most important public policy issues, Fixing the Future will be of interest to political scientists, historians, economists, and anyone concerned about their retirement.

Book excerpt: The Future of Investigative Journalism: Report (HL 256) concludes that news organizations, regulators and relevant legal bodies need to make important changes if the future of investigative journalism is to be assured. The Committee recommends that media organizations introduce an audit trail to track and record their decisions: firstly, to commence an investigation, and secondly to publish a story. Legal clarity and consistency is also required. Guidelines should be published by the prosecuting authorities to help media outlets decide whether conducting an investigation or publishing a story could lead to prosecution. The Committee further suggests that funding models need to be flexible and creative. Fines for breaches of regulatory codes could be allocated to a special fund reserved for the financing of investigative journalism or training. All Public Relations practitioners should abide by a clear code of behavior, potentially overseen by a t

Download or read book The Future of National Intelligence written by Shay Hershkovitz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National intelligence agencies have long adjusted to the opportunities and threats from new technologies, and have created structures, concepts, and practices to best apply new capabilities. But such recent technological developments as artificial intelligence are different in kind. Increasingly affordable to nongovernmental actors, they are powerful enough to overwhelm and marginalize much of what agencies do. In The Future of National Intelligence: How Emerging Technologies Reshape Intelligence Communities, Shay Hershkovitz argues that only with a new paradigm can these agencies take up this fundamentally new technological challenge.
Book Synopsis The Building Schools for the Future Programme by : Great Britain. National Audit Office
Download or read book The Building Schools for the Future Programme written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (BSF) programme believe that it is leading to more strategic procurement of school infrastructure than previous school building programmes. Local Authorities are using BSF to rearrange the location, type and number of schools in their area and create facilities and school environments which support their educational objectives. BSF schools are built to higher specifications and space standards than previous schools. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and Partnerships for Schools (the body established by DCSF to manage the BSF programme centrally) were too optimistic in their assumptions of how quickly the first schools could be delivered. By December 2008, only 42 of the planned 200 schools had been built, with 54 due to open next year and 121 the year after. To include all schools in the programme, 250 schools will need to be built a year and the number of schools in procurement and construction at any one time will need to double from 2011 onwards. The extent to which problems in the finance markets will affect BSF is still unclear. DCSF and Partnerships for Schools estimate that the total cost of renewing the school estate will be between £52 billion to £55 billion which is £7 billion to £10 billion more than was estimated at the outset of the programme.

Book excerpt: American Dream or American Nightmare? Norman Spinrad describes The Star-Spangled Future: "America is something new under the sun. not so much a nation at all as a precog flash of the future of the species . . . I wrote believing that I was simply writing disconnected science fiction stories from whatever came into my head . . . And they all turned out to be about America, the leading edge of all possible futures unfolding around us . . . After all, that was what was coming into my head, that's the mother lode of science fiction realities - the American fusion plasma of which we are creatures - and all we have to do is keep ourselves open to it . . . that's my definition of science fiction. We have seen the future and it is us."

Book excerpt: This report is the Committee's third inquiry and examines the issues that arose from the Examination in Public in 2009 of the Phase 2 update to the Regional Strategic Plan. That examination covered contentious subjects such as overall housing growth targets for the region, transport and the allocation of land for employment use. The inquiry also looks at the region's preparations for the introduction of the single Regional Strategy process which will come into effect from 1 April 2010. The evidence received by the Committee was overwhelmingly in favour of retaining strategic at the regional level and they are convinced that this is necessary to agree priorities between local authorities to deliver transport infrastructure, protect the environment and achieve urban renaissance.
Book Synopsis Creating the Future? The 1960s New English Universities by : Ourania Filippakou
Download or read book Creating the Future? The 1960s New English Universities written by Ourania Filippakou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the developments of the UK Higher Education system, from a time of donnish dominion, progressive decline and the increasing role of the market via the introduction of tuition fees. It offers a protracted empirical analysis of the seven new English universities of the 1960s: the Universities of East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Lancaster, Sussex, Warwick and York. It explores the creation of these universities and investigates how they each responded to a number of centrally-imposed initiatives for change in UK higher education that have emerged since their foundation. It discusses changes in system governance and how the Higher Education policies it generated have impacted upon a particular segment of the English university model. Divided into three parts, the book first deals with such topics as the control the University Grants’ Committee exercised in its heyday and how they initiated the launch of new universities. It then examines policy initiatives on government cuts on grants, research assessment exercises, quality assurance procedures and student tuition fees. The last part takes a broader approach to change by studying the significance and demise of Mission Groups, a changing system of Higher Education and more general changes regarding the state, the market and governance.
