Book excerpt: Hybrid cars, and indeed, all electric vehicles are playing a rôle in the salvation of the planet’s eco-system. At least, in respect to the world supporting human life. However, hybrid cars will one day be replaced by vehicles that use no irreplaceable energy at at all, once the technology is there. It is likely that there will be at least two such power sources in the near future: electricity and hydrogen – but who knows what else will be available? Hybrid and electric cars are revolutionizing the automotive landscape, offering a myriad of advantages that extend beyond the traditional internal combustion engine. One of the primary benefits is environmental sustainability. Electric cars produce zero tailpipe emissions, significantly reducing air pollution and carbon footprint. As the world grapples with climate change, the shift towards electric vehicles is a crucial step in mitigating environmental impact. Furthermore, these vehicles contribute to energy efficiency. Hybrid cars combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor, optimizing fuel consumption and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Electric cars, relying solely on electric power, boast high energy efficiency and cost savings over time. With advancements in battery technology, electric cars now offer extended ranges and faster charging times, addressing concerns about range anxiety. Beyond environmental and economic advantages, hybrid and electric cars provide a smoother and quieter driving experience. The instant torque delivery in electric motors enhances acceleration, making these vehicles not only eco-friendly but also performance-oriented. As governments worldwide incentivise the adoption of cleaner technologies, the advantages of hybrid and electric cars position them as the driving force in the future of sustainable and efficient transportation. Book excerpt: Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) could alleviate the nation's dependence on oil and reduce U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas. Industry-and government-sponsored research programs have made very impressive technical progress over the past several years, and several companies are currently introducing pre-commercial vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations in limited markets. However, to achieve wide hydrogen vehicle penetration, further technological advances are required for commercial viability, and vehicle manufacturer and hydrogen supplier activities must be coordinated. In particular, costs must be reduced, new automotive manufacturing technologies commercialized, and adequate supplies of hydrogen produced and made available to motorists. These efforts will require considerable resources, especially federal and private sector funding. This book estimates the resources that will be needed to bring HFCVs to the point of competitive self-sustainability in the marketplace. It also estimates the impact on oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions as HFCVs become a large fraction of the light-duty vehicle fleet.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, University Karlsruhe (TH) (Sprachenzentrum), course: English for Engineers C1, language: English, abstract: It is very unusual in today's world that an evolutionary development step turns out to be revolutionary. Some experts claim, hybrid cars can revolutionize the car industry, but will they? In order to come to an objective conclusion, the following analysis deals primarily with the technical improvements of hybrid cars and compares key aspects to conventional car design. Structure is one of the first and most crucial decisions to be made. Evaluating different structures is thus an important aspect of an overall analysis. The relatively complex situation of having two engines combined leads to the question of optimized controlling strategies. Responsible for storing the electric energy are the rechargeable batteries. With these aspects in mind, a detailed conclusion on costs and benefits is possible. This should allow for a differentiate view on hybrid cars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Racing Toward Zero, the authors explore the issues inherent in developing sustainable transportation. They review the types of propulsion systems and vehicle options, discuss low-carbon fuels and alternative energy sources, and examine the role of regulation in curbing emissions. All technologies have an impact on the environment, from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and hybrids-there is no silver bullet. The battery electric vehicle may seem the obvious path to a sustainable, carbon-free transportation future, but it's not the only, nor necessarily the best, path forward. The vast majority of vehicles today use the internal combustion engine (ICE), and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Improving the ICE and its fuels-entering a new ICE age-must be a main route on the road to zero emissions. How do we go green? The future requires a balanced approach to transportation. It's not a matter of choosing between combustion or electrification; it's combustion and electrification. As the authors say, "The future is eclectic." By harnessing the best qualities of both technologies, we will be in the best position to address our transportation future as quickly as possible. Book excerpt: Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Power Sources, Models, Sustainability, Infrastructure and the Market reviews the performance, cost, safety, and sustainability of battery systems for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs), including nickel-metal hydride batteries and Li-ion batteries. Throughout this book, especially in the first chapters, alternative vehicles with different power trains are compared in terms of lifetime cost, fuel consumption, and environmental impact. The emissions of greenhouse gases are particularly dealt with. The improvement of the battery, or fuel cell, performance and governmental incentives will play a fundamental role in determining how far and how substantial alternative vehicles will penetrate into the market. An adequate recharging infrastructure is of paramount importance for the diffusion of vehicles powered by batteries and fuel cells, as it may contribute to overcome the so-called range anxiety."" Thus, proposed battery charging techniques are summarized and hydrogen refueling stations are described. The final chapter reviews the state of the art of the current models of hybrid and electric vehicles along with the powertrain solutions adopted by the major automakers. Contributions from the worlds leading industry and research experts Executive summaries of specific case studies Information on basic research and application approaches

Book excerpt: Electric vehicles are changing transportation dramatically and this unique book merges the many disciplines that contribute research to make EV possible, so the reader is informed about all the underlying science and technologies driving the change. An emission-free mobility system is the only way to save the world from the greenhouse effect and other ecological issues. This belief has led to a tremendous growth in the demand for electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), which are predicted to have a promising future based on the goals fixed by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 program. This book brings together the research that has been carried out in the EV/HEV sector and the leading role of advanced optimization techniques with artificial intelligence (AI). This is achieved by compiling the findings of various studies in the electrical, electronics, computer, and mechanical domains for the EV/HEV system. In addition to acting as a hub for information on these research findings, the book also addresses the challenges in the EV/HEV sector and provides proven solutions that involve the most promising AI techniques. Since the commercialization of EVs/HEVs still remains a challenge in industries in terms of performance and cost, these are the two tradeoffs which need to be researched in order to arrive at an optimal solution. Therefore, this book focuses on the convergence of various technologies involved in EVs/HEVs. Since all countries will gradually shift from conventional internal combustion (IC) engine-based vehicles to EVs/HEVs in the near future, it also serves as a useful reliable resource for multidisciplinary researchers and industry teams.
