By drawing on extensive survey evidence, it charts Germans’ changing views of the political system prior to and following unification. The study examines four aspects of the political system: how it functions overall, attitudes towards the Basic Law, trust in representative institutions, and views of the European Union. Rather than accepting or rejecting democracy, the research shows how Germans merge shades of criticism and support. In addition, it pinpoints the factors that condition support, showing how it is influenced by durable and changeable stimuli. Overall, the findings challenge suggestions of a crisis of democracy but they also demonstrate that support is particularly low towards aspects of the European Union. This book appeals to readers interested in public opinion and democracy in Germany, along with those interested in the changing relationship between citizens and the state.

The foundations, however, have also committed themselves to strengthening democratic political and societal structures abroad. Their joint mission abroad is the contribution to democratic structures, information and debate in the countries and regions they are working in. They complement the official German foreign policy, but choose their own priorities and strategies. The focus of this thesis is the German political foundations as actors in democracy assistance. 'Democracy assistance' focuses less on the aspects of technical assistance but much more on political parties and the promotion of civil society as the backbone of democracy. Democracy assistance is a relatively recent international development activity of governments and international organizations. In recent years the international community has come to realize the importance of political parties and a well-functioning political party system for the process of democratisation. Here the German political foundations are working internationally as actors in democracy assistance - independent from the German government but at the same time fully state-funded. The objectives of this dissertation are to understand the work and strategies of the German political foundations as actors in the context of democracy assistance abroad, research their partner spectrums on selected countries, to identify their short comings and to give an outlook of the foundations work in the future in the fast-changing global political environment.

Also, electronic democracy (e-democracy) can be seen nowadays as a large concept with more successful participation for German democracy. E-democracy represents the use of Information and Communication Technologies and strategies by democratic actors (governments, elected officials, the media, political organizations, citizens/voters) within the political and governing processes of local communities, nations and on the international stage. Moreover, e-democracy suggests greater and more active participation enabled by the Internet, mobile communications, and other technologies in today ́s direct democracy as well as through more participatory or direct forms of citizen involvement in addressing public challenges. In Germany, the new and unconventional style of Internet politics has enabled the German Pirate Party to take a spot on the national political stage. The Pirate Party operates quite differently from other parties and can be seen as a model that will affect other parties through adoption of direct e-democracy in the future. Apparently, their unconventional, transparent and internet-based style of politics has become the center of several public debates and gained quick popularity. It is for these reasons that this is a worthwhile topic to be examined in this paper: What impact has the digital revolution of the German Pirate Party on direct democracy in Germany and how does it affect the transparency of an administration? To answer this question, the paper is divided into four main chapters, excluding the introduction and conclusion. Chapter one lays out the foundation of the German Pirate Party and provides an insight into its origination. Chapter two examines the German Pirate Party, its structure, political agenda as well as their aims according to the political system of Germany. Chapter three aims at investigating the impact of the Pirates on transparency of administration. Finally, chapter four is dedicated to present an analysis of the changed aspect of direct democracy by the Pirate Party and its digital influence as a new social movement on German direct democracy.

Given East Germany's authoritarian history, how democratic are its citizens now? What kind of democracy do they want a liberal or socialist democracy? What economic system do they prefer? How have they reacted to democratic and market systems since 1989? The book shows how individual institutional learning may be offset by the diffusion of democratic values. The author uses public opinion surveys to compare attitudes of MPs and the general public, and in-depth interviews with parliamentarians in east, and west Berlin to show the persistence of socialist views in the east as well as lower levels of political tolerance. Moreover, the book argues, these values have changed fairly littlesince unification. The author presents evidence and develops implications for other post-socialist nations, arguing that while post-socialist citizens do not yearn for the old socialist order, their socialist values frequently lower enthusiasm for new democratic and market institutions. The implications being that ideological values are primarily shaped by individual exposure to institutions and that democratic and market values are diffused only in specific conditions. More than just an analysis of German political culture, the book offers conpelling conclusions about the future of democracy in all post-socialist states. Robert Rohrschneider won the Stein Rokkan Prize for best book in comparative politics by a young scholar awarded by the International Social Science Committee of UNESCO.
