Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal world embodies diversified groups which colonize, multiply and survive in nature on many macro- and micro-ecological niches and substrates. Fungi are eukaryotic, achlorophyllous, filamentous or unicellular living organisms which are ubiquitous and cosmopolitan in distribution. Of the estimated 1.5 million fungal species, more than 98,000 fungal species have been described. Approximately 28,000 fungal species are reported from India. The fungi play an important role in biodegradation, recycling of organic matter, pharmaceutical industries, agriculture, medicine, industry, bioremediation, waste management and other activities. In India hardly we have database but for few a books on Indian fungi, compiled from time to time by some mycologists. The present book includes 16 chapters contributed by eminent mycologists. Chapters include data on diversity, taxonomy, ecology and application of Helicosporous fungi, genus Spegazzinia, Rusts and Smuts, Chaetomiaceae, Macrophomina, Rhizoctonia, Russula, wild edible fungi, poisonous mushrooms, insect fungi and other related aspects. This book will be very useful and a valuable addition to the existing literature on the same subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this volume is purposeful in bringing together the information available till date on various aspects of fungal diversity in Indian sub-continent. The Indian sub-continent is characterized with diverse topography, climatic conditions and turn over of green vegetation all the year round in its one or the other parts and correspondingly this sub-continent is adorned with immense fungal diversity. This compilation focuses light on the diversity and bioremediation, biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles employing fungal organisms, biotechnological and molecular approaches in characterization of fungal diversity, biological control, new approaches on fungal diversity including heavy metal toxicities and resistance in fungi, alkaloid biosynthesis and complexone siderophores as iron transport compounds in some group of fungal organisms. An account is also presented on fungal cellulases in novel industrial application, aflatoxin contamination, toxicosis and preventive measures. A major part of this book is devoted to discuss the recent trends and current status of diversity of fungal forms or groups thereof including thermophilic fungi, keratinolytic fungi, rust fungi, agaricales, acellular slime fungi, fleshy fungi, Alternaria species associated with cucurbitaceous vegetables and fungal diversity in forest ecosystems. A great deal of morphotaxonomic diversity is presented including coelomycetes, loculoascomycetes and certain individual fungal genera viz., Phoma, Ravenalia, Vermiculariopsiella, Phaeoramularia, Gonatophragmium, Stenella, Corynespora, Colletotrichum and Ceratocytis species. Habitat diversity has also been discussed with reference to indoor and outdoor environments. Some chapters have also been devoted to discuss the biodiversity of fungal forms as biocontrol agents and their commercial application in agriculture and human life.

Book excerpt: Indian mycologists have extensively studied various groups of fungi such as soil fungi, aquatic fungi, marine fungi, endophytic fungi, fungi associated with man and animals. Though several books on various aspects of fungi are published, this is the first account of the history and developments in mycology in India. It discusses at length various stages of development of mycology including both classical and biotechnological aspects. It begins with a historical account of Indian mycology, followed by a description of research on fossil fungi. Further chapters cover the latest updates on different taxonomic groups of fungi. A dedicated section describes the roles and applications of fungal endophytes. The book also includes research in other important areas such as mushrooms and wood rotting fungi. Different chapters are written by leading mycologists. This book is useful to students, teachers and researchers in botany, microbiology, biotechnology and life sciences, agriculture and industries using fungi to produce various valuable products.

Book excerpt: The fifth order of the natural kingdom is made up of an estimated 1.5 million species of fungi, found in every habitat type worldwide. The Book of Fungi takes 600 of the most remarkable fleshy fungi from around the world and reproduces each at its actual size, in full colour, and accompanied by a scientific explanation of its distribution, habitat, association, abundance, growth form, spore colour and edibility. Location maps give at-a-glance indications of each species known global distribution, and specially commissioned engravings show different fruitbody forms and provide the vital statistics of height and diameter. Theres a place, too, for readers to discover the more bizarre habits of fungi from the predator that hunts its prey with lassos to the one that entices sows by releasing the pheromones of a wild boar. Mushrooms, morels, puffballs, toadstools, truffles, chanterelles fungi from habitats spanning the poles and the tropics, from the highest mountains to our own gardens are all on display in this definitive work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis' and Cunningham's work sets out to establish whether the connection between vegetable growths (fungi) and the diseases characterised by such growths is one of causation or correlation. Having worked as assistants to the sanitary commissioner of India, the researchers focus on the Madura foot-and-hand-disease common on the subcontinent. Fungoid growth of two distinct kinds is characteristic in various stages of the disease. Both the "pale" and the "dark" variety are examined and exemplified on various specimens in order to reveal if they provide a causal factor of the disease.
