Book excerpt: The author has made the science of geology his life study, with a view to harmonizing it with the Bible record of creation particularly. His book is based on discoveries in geology which clearly indicate that thee is something wrong with the generally accepted teachings on this science. An intensely interesting, non-technical presentation of the doctrine of evolution, and its application to Bible truth.

CHAPTER XIII Scientific Methods In Part One of this book I tried to examine into the facts and methods which are commonly supposed to prove that there has been a succession of life on the globe. We found that this life succession theory has not a single fact to support it; that it is not the result of scientific research, but wholly the product of an inventive imagination; that no one kind of fossil has ever been proved or can be proved to be intrinsically older than another, or than Man himself; and hence that a complete reconstruction of geological theory is imperatively demanded by our modern knowledge. In short, that ancient world whose ruins we now have as fossils was a unit, and simply an older state of our present world. All the important groups of living plants and animals have now been found as fossils, and their classification does not represent a time value in the one case any more than in the other. The geological series of fossils represents merely taxonomic relationships, just as would a similar arrangement of the living species, nothing more. In Part Two the following additional facts have been brought out: 1. The abnormal character of much of the fossiliferous deposits. 2. A radical and world-wide change of climate. 3. The marked degeneration in passing from the fossil world to the modern one. 4. The fact that the human race, to say nothing of a vast number of living species of plants and animals, has participated in some of the greatest of the geological changes--we really know not how to limit the number or character of these changes. These additional facts still further emphasize the unity or solidarity of that ancient world. They show how all its parts are indissolubly bound together in a common fate, and how sharply...

Book Synopsis Systematic Theology, Volume 1, Fourth Edition by : James Leo Garrett Jr.

This book was released on 2014-09-14 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rivals the major systematic theologies of this century." --Baptist History and Heritage Journal, July 1996 "One of the characteristics of Garrett's system that needs especially to be noted is its balanced, judicious, and nearly invariably objective presentation of materials. While holding true to the teachings of his own Baptist faith, Garrett so carefully and judiciously presents alternatives . . . that teachers and students from other confessional and denominational positions will find his work instructive." --Consensus, 1997 "If one is searching for an extensive exposition of the biblical foundations and historical developments of the various loci of systematic theology, there is no more complete presentation in a relatively short work than this . . . Pastors will especially find this feature to be a real help in teaching theology . . . [It is] an indispensable contribution to the task of systematic theology." --Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, September 1999 "Many students and pastors will find all they need here, and will in addition be helped to relate their knowledge to recent developments in the theological world." --The Churchman: A Journal of Anglican Theology, 1991 "A gold mine of helpful material." --The Christian Century, May 29-June 5, 1991 "No book that I know is more loaded with biblical and theological facts than this one. The prodigious research that must have gone into the preparation of this volume is truly mind-boggling." --Faith and Mission, Fall 1991 "Garrett has provided a massive and scholarly systematic theology from a thoroughly conservative and comprehensive viewpoint. The work is well documented in both biblical and historical scholarship and will prove to be a classic." --William Hendrickson, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary "One of the most comprehensive, concise books of its type available; it should receive wide use in the classroom and in the study." --Robert H. Culpepper, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Download or read book Creation and Evolution written by Lenn E. Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can religion survive Darwinism? Do scientists entering the lab or heading for the field have to bracket, or reject outright, all religious commitments and convictions? Trenchantly laying out the evidence for natural selection and carefully following and underscoring the themes and theses of Genesis, L. E. Goodman traces the historical and conceptual backgrounds of today’s evolution controversies, revealing the deep complementarities of religion and the life sciences. Solidly researched and replete with scientific case studies, vignettes from intellectual history, and thoughtful argument, Creation and Evolution forthrightly exposes the strengths and weaknesses of today’s polarized battle camps. Religious and scientific fundamentalisms, Goodman shows, obscure the real biblical message and distort the deepest insights and richest findings of Darwinian science.

Book Synopsis God and Nature by : David C. Lindberg
Download or read book God and Nature written by David C. Lindberg and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication in 1896 of Andrew Dickson White's classic "History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom", no comprehensive history of the subject has appeared in the English language. Although many twentieth-century historians have written on the relationship between Christianity and science, and in the process have called into question many of White's conclusions, the image of warfare lingers in the public mind. To provide an up-to-date alternative, based on the best available scholarship and written in nontechnical language, the editors of this volume have assembled an international group of distinguished historians. In eighteen essays prepared especially for this book, these authors cover the period from the early Christian church to the twentieth century, offering fresh appraisals of such encounters as the trial of Galileo, the formulation of the Newtonian worldview, the coming of Darwinism, and the ongoing controversies over 'scientific creationism'. They explore not only the impact of religion on science, but also the influence of science and religion. This landmark volume promises not only to silence the persistent rumors of war between Christianity and science, but also serve as the point of departure for new explorations of their relationship. Scholars and general readers alike will find it provocative and readable.
