Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles of Petrology The need of a short presentation of the fundamental principles of petrology as applied to geology has suggested the translation of the first volume of Professor Weinschenk's Grundzuge der Gesteinskunde. Without thereby expressing his belief or disbelief in the views of the author, the translator has tried to adhere as closely as possible to the sense as well as to the mode of expression of the original. Only in the case of the Osann classification has any additional material been inserted. The rules for calculating analyses in this system are readily accessible to the German student but not to others, and in view of the growing use made of Osann's triangular diagrams by European geologists, the addition was thought justifiable. Owing to the uncertainty of shipments from Germany, it was impossible to obtain the original electrotypes of the illustrations, consequently the cuts in this translation were reproduced from the figures in the German volume, and are not quite so sharp as they otherwise would have been. The translator is deeply indebted and very grateful to Dr. E. A. Stephenson for critically reading this manuscript and for various suggestions. He is also indebted to Miss Caroline A. Duror for carefully reading it and for pointing out certain ambiguous passages. The sad death of this brilliant and promising student permits the writer to express his appreciation only in the dedication of this translation to her memory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Petrology The present work is founded on An Introduction to Petrology, published in 1909. It was originally intended as a third edition of the latter, but the changes which seemed advisable in the treatment of some parts of the subject and in the bringing of others up to date were so extensive that a change of title appears fully justified. Some of the old illustrations have been used, but most are new; tables of analyses, etc., have been inserted and larger type has been employed for the text. The chapters on the origin of the igneous rocks and those dealing with metamorphism have been entirely remodelled, and it is hoped that they will be found less crude than some critics of the former volume not unjustly pronounced them to be. They are the result of over ten years' almost continuous field work in South Africa, which has been set out less comprehensively but with more local detail in the Geological Magazine, the Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society, and elsewhere. For the most part this book was written at too great a distance from the centres of scientific thought to owe much to outside influence, save as conveyed through books. I have, however, to thank Messrs. Franklin White, H. B. Maufe, and A. E. V. Zealley for access to specimens and literature, and for other information. I am also indebted to Prof. G. A. J. Cole and Dr. C. G. Cullis for several suggestions and corrections. As regards illustrations, figs. 38, 43 and 107 are from photographs of slides lent by Mr. Zealley, figs. 82 and 86 from rocks sent me by Mr. G. W. Card, while fig. 45 was made from one of Mr. J. L. Popham's slides. To the last I am under a special debt of gratitude for taking the photographs from which were made figs. 26, 44, 47, 49, 98 and 104.The few figures which have previously appeared elsewhere have their source indicated underneath each of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of Rocks: An Elementary Text-Book on Petrology Assistant Naturalist to the Geological Survey, for some interesting notes on his method of preparing microscopic sections of coal, and to Mr. J. B. Jordan, of the Mining Record Office, for the revision of the chapter on the preparation of microscopic sections, and for the use.of the wood-block representing the construction of his section-cutting machine. In the classification I have to some extent deviated from the systems commonly adopted; and, in the general treatment of the different subjects, original ideas and observations are more or less plentifully interwoven with the information derived from books. Visitors and students are advised to follow the order of the explana tory text, beginning with the Vestibule and completing the study of the geological agencies before passing to the petrographic collections in Room B. A part only of the main floor of this room is devoted to Petrography, sec tions 24 to 31 and the gallery being reserved, provision ally, for illustrations of the local and New England geology. On entering Room B, the lithologic collection begins on the left hand, in section 1 of the wall-cases, and extends around the room to section 23; while the two central or floor-cases contain the petrologic collection, with the exception of some of the larger illustrations, which are in the table-cases and in the Vestibule. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Geology There are probably but few people of observation and practical experience who doubt the value of proper geological training for the engineer, since he must be prepared to meet and often to solve many problems which involve geological principles. For such knowledge it is necessary that the engineer Should have adequate training in at least those fundamental principles of geology which relate to engineering problems. Among the important questions which the engineer has to consider are the character of the common rocks in their use for building stone and road material; the structure of rocks in relation to tunneling opera tions, dam and reservoir foundations, landslides, etc.; the geological conditions affecting and controlling underground water supplies; the relation of soils to sewage disposal and water purification, etc. More over, some familiarity with such materials as fuels (coal, oil and gas), clays, cements, etc., is also necessary. There may be difference of opinion as to whether the civil engineer should be grounded in abstract geological principles and afterwards allowed to apply them in the field, or whether the exposition of the necessary principles should be illustrated in each instance by actual cases, which show the application of the principle. The first method does not usually appeal to those who have had much practical experience, nor does it find much favor with the engineering student; moreover, it can hardly be considered successful from the pedagogic standpoint. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Geology, or the Modern Changes of the Earth and Its Inhabitants: Considered as Illustrative of Geology In thus separating the two works, however, I have retained in the Principles (book i.) the discussion of some matters which might fairly be regarded as common to both treatises as for example, an historical sketch of the early progress Of geology, followed by a series of preliminary essays to explain the facts and arguments which lead me to believe that the forces now operating upon and beneath the earth's surface may be the same, both in kind and degree, as those which at remote epochs have worked out geological changes.
