Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulverized Fuel In a country of such enormous proportions as the Dominion of Canada, extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and northward to the Arctic, and with its severe winters, the question of an adequate fuel supply as a source of heat, light and power, and for use in the metallurgical industries, must always be of paramount importance. To a extent the requisites of power and light can be supplied by the utilization of the numerous waterfalls with which the country is so abundantly supplied. Based upon investigations by the Commission of Conservation, the total water-power in Canada is estimated at 18,953,000 horse-power. Assuming that, under average conditions, one horse-power-hour can be produced in a steam plant from three pounds of coal, one-half of the 17,000,000 horse-power, if developed, would, on a basis of twelve hours a day, and a load factor of 50 per cent, represent a saving of nearly 24,000,000 tons of coal per year. Although hydro-electric energy will, where available, to a great extent replace the use of coal for light and power purposes and for certain metallurgical work, the necessary uses of coal will continue on a large scale. The coal deposits of Canada, in respect of quality, quantity, and accessibility for mining purposes, compare favourably with those of other countries. About one-sixth of the coal resources of the world is possessed by Canada. The deposits are, however, confined to the eastern and western portions of the Dominion, the large central market being supplied by imported coal. Previous to the war, Nova Scotia bituminous coal was used as far west as Montreal, while United States bituminous was sold within the area extending from Montreal to Swift Current and Saskatoon, Sask., the railways being the principal users of this fuel. Portions of Manitoba and Saskatchewan are supplied with coal also from Crowsnest, Lethbridge, Canmore, Drumheller, Edmonton, Yellowhead Pass and Souris districts. Eastern Canada possesses no deposits of anthracite, and, as this class of coal is suitable for heating and domestic purposes, considerable quantities are imported from the United States. Prior to the war, it was sold over an area extending from Nova Scotia to Battleford, Sask., in the west. In 1913, imports exceeded 4,640,000 tons, more than double those of 1906; thus it is apparent that the demand for anthracite is rapidly increasing, notwithstanding the upward tendency of prices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fuels of Western Canada and Their Efficient Utilization: Revised Edition, Read at the Second Professional Meeting of the Engineering Institute of Canada, Saskatoon, Sask;, August 8-10, 1918 Coal is, of course, much the most important fuel of Western Canada, and ranges from the lignite of the prairies to the semi-anthracite of the Rocky mountains. Thu Coal Fields and Coal Resources of Canada contains a statement of the coal resources of the Dominion. This statement of reserves is divided into two groups. Group I includes "coal in seams containing not less than one foot of merchantable coal occurring not more than 4,000 feet below the surface, including workable submarine areas." This group, Dr. Dowling states, includes the coal "of economic value contained in seams of workable thickness, situated within a mineable distance of the surface." Group II includes seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal occurring at depths between 4,000 and 6,000 feet. Such seams are situated beyond present mineable distance of the surface and have not been considered in this paper. Both groups are subdivided into (1) Actual Reserves, which includes cases in which the calculation of the amount was "based on a knowledge of the actual thickness and extent of the seams"; (2) Probable Reserves, which includes "cases in which an approximate estimate only" could be arrived at. At the present time, to be economically 'workable, ' a seam must be more than one foot thick, and no coal mine in Canada approaches 4,000 feet in depth, though, in the Crowsnest district, some workings have a 'cover'of several thousand feet. At great depths the greatly increased ventilation is a matter of expense and difficulty; 'creeps' and subsidences of strata are unavoidable and either crush the coal or render it inaccessible; the capital and current expenditure of the mine grows in a higher proportion than the depths; the costs of raising water, coal, miners, etc., increase. As one who, living in Montreal and in daily touch with the affairs of some of our largest corporations, may not un reasonably have to accept any criticisms of big business as my own concern, I shall at once admit that I have sometimes found in its ranks less than full appreciation of all the problems of the West. Will you forgive me when I say that, in turn, my close andconstant contact with Western Opinion has sometimes made it quite clear to me that the Prairies do not always fully realize the problems of the industrial and commercial interests of the East. We are today facing conditions in Canada, which while less distressing than those in most other lands, are such as to demand the united effort of all sections of the nation if we are to emerge from our present maze of problems without permanent damage to our national fabric. I am frankly an optimist. During the times when we saw the commerce of this country, and the earnings of its citizens, slowly and apparently incessantly shrinking, I refused to accept the doctrines of despair which were so freely preached. I do not accept them today. I remain convinced that the destiny of our country is not to be fulfilled by our accepting defeat, and the denial of all the reasonable ambitions which we have confidently held, and have taught to our youth. The Texas Company was early in this oil fuel field, organizing in the year 1902.
