Book excerpt: The objective of this report is to improve the material performance of a graphite/epoxy prepreg composite with particular relevence to its fatigue performance. Fatigue strength and resistance to fatigue damage of Modmor II/ Narmco 5206 composite were improved by interleaving the composite prepreg laminate with glass scrim cloth. Cantilever beam specimens of two fiber orientations were tested under uniform stress fatigue and sequential block loading. Flexural strength studies and the effects of ambient aging of composites on their elevated temperature properties are reported. Besides ambient aging the investigation also included accelerated aging tests on laminates of two different fiber orientations with and without interleaving of scrim cloth. Improvement in the mechanical behavior of graphite/epoxy prepreg composite was obtained with the addition of glass scrim cloth.

Book excerpt: The advanced composite materials possess characteristics of stiffness and strength which are most desirable for advanced naval aircraft. Glass composite materials, on the other hand, possess the equally desirable characteristic of low cost. The appropriate combination of these many features can be obtained by a suitable blending of the two or more composite materials. Technically, the blending of two or more fiber types in a laminate, can be achieved by (1) mixing the fibers in the tow or roving, (2) intra-ply mixing of glass rovings with graphite tows or, (3) interleaving or interply mixing of two separate fibrous prepreg systems or any combination of the above. There are additional economic advantages to the third approach where prepreg tapes with a common resin system are prepared for two separate fibers: glass and graphite. For this reason the third approach was selected for some further study particularly with regard to the fatigue performance and its relative behavior to prior studies of the separate composites. The specific objective of the program was to utilize a commercially available glass and a commercially available high strength and high modulus graphite with a common epoxy matrix to maximize the technical performance of the hybrid composite in fatigue applications. Book Synopsis Fatigue Damage, Crack Growth and Life Prediction by : F. Ellyin
Download or read book Fatigue Damage, Crack Growth and Life Prediction written by F. Ellyin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-11-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.
