DR. GUNTHER very well observes, that no female with an elongated spine and yellow covering has ever been discovered, and that the slight variation in the habits of the Gemmeous and Sordid Dragonets is caused, not by any distinction of species, but by difference of age. The mature fish is quick in its habits, and likes moderately deep water, while the immature specimens are brisk, active, and lively, darting off at any passing object which they may think suitable for food, and then returning to their resting-place, just like fly-catchers pursuing their prey. The Dragonets are mostly captured in trawl nets, and are frequently taken by shrimpers, though the capture of an adult male in a shrimp-net would be rather a rare occurrence. If the reader can secure a good specimen, let him make much of it, and not fail to preserve it when it succumbs to the fate that at one time or another befalls all inhabitants of an aquarium. There is a small group of fishes which are called, from their structure, Pipe, or Bill Fishes. They are among the oddest of the finny race, and are well worth a careful examination. Fortunately, they are very plentiful, so that there is no difficulty in obtaining specimens for investigation. In this group there exist so many peculiarities that it is difficult to describe them in their proper order. We will, however, begin with the structure from which they derive their name. They are among fish what the Snipe and Woodcock are to birds, their jaws being greatly lengthened and attenuated. But they differ from the Snipe in the fact that the jaws are united throughout their whole length, and have but a very small mouth at the extremity.
