Book excerpt: The frequency of plane standing waves of electrons moving through a background of infinitely heavy ions is strictly independent of amplitue as long as the electron velocity is a unique function of position. This result is contrary to those presented in recent publications by S. Amer, J. Electronics and Control, 5:105-13, 158 and L. Gold, J. Electronics and Control, 6:548-549, 1959. The frequencies of spherical and cylindicl plsma oscillations, however, do depend upon the amplitude of the oscillation. AsA RESULT, ANY PHASE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ELECTRONS EVENTUALLY WILL BE DESTROYED AND THE ELECTRON VELOCIY BECOMES MULTIVALUED. Therefore steady free oscillations do not persist even in a cold plasma. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time now there has been an interest in the nop. linear interaction of electromagnetic waves in plasma [1,2]. But only in the last few years has the theory of nonlinear wave inter action effects undergone such vigorous development as to result in the formulation of clear phYSical concepts regarding the mech anisms of interaction. This development has been engendered by attempts to solve many of the plasma-physical problems accom panying the tremendous growth of experimental research [3]. The importance of nonlinear effects in modern plasma physics is dis cussed in detail in Chap. I. At this point we merely stress the fact that today the analysis of nonlinear effects is a practical ne cessity in any experiment involving plasma instabilities. We should also point out that plasma instabilities can assert them selves extensively in solids (solid state plasma) and play an im portant part in the study of cosmic plasma. Consequently, the problems of nonlinear wave interaction in plasma are of concern to those working in widely different areas of physics. Yet it is difficult to assimilate the results of investigations on nonlinear effects, owing to the complicated way in which the results of orig inal research are presented. In the present book the author hopes in some measure to fill the need for a text on the physics of non linear effects that is accessible to a fairly general audience.

Book excerpt: Exact non-linear wave solutions are obtained for waves stationary in a uniformly moving frame for the case of a Maxwellian electron plasma in a uniform ion background. It is found that there are no waves below a minimum wave velocity; anharmonic waves develop above the critical velocity, but only up to a maximum amplitude, depending on the wave velocity; frequency amplitude relations indicate that small amplitude linearized theory is not a good approximation, except for large wave velocities; and in the limit of zero amplitude, twice the frequency of oscillation given by linearized theory for any wave velocity is obtained. Book excerpt: We find that the nonlinear wave propagation leads to the interesting nonlinear response in the terminal current even though the applied signal is of much lower frequency then the fundamental plasma frequency. Simllar response is found when the frequencies of applied signals are equal but their amplitudes are different or if there is a phase shift between applied signals. This may allow for the expenmental demonstration of the nonlinear plasma response and some novel device applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma Electrodynamics, Volume 2: Non-Linear Theory and Fluctuations deals with the theory of nonlinear waves in a collisionless plasma, including the quasilinear theory, the theory of plasma turbulence, and the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations in a plasma. Topics covered range from nonlinear high-frequency waves in a cold plasma to the theory of plasma oscillations in the quasilinear approximation. Nonlinear wave-particle interactions are also discussed, along with scattering and transformation of waves in a plasma. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with a study of nonlinear waves in a collisionless plasma, focusing on nonlinear high-frequency waves in a cold plasma; Langmuir waves in a non-relativistic plasma; and longitudinal, transverse, and coupled longitudinal-transverse waves in a relativistic plasma. After expounding on the quasilinear theory, which describes the effects of the first approximation in terms of the plasma wave energy, the nonlinear interaction of waves and particles is considered. The last three chapters explore the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations in a plasma; the theory of scattering processes and the transformation of waves in a plasma; and the scattering of charged particles in a plasma. The polarization energy losses when charged particles move in a plasma are calculated. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Nonlinear Plasma Theory is from lectures given in graduate classes in both University of Maryland and University of California at Berkeley. To be able to understand fully the contents in this book, the reader is assumed to be a graduate student with background of classical physics and linear plasma waves and instabilities. This text is divided into two major parts. Part I deals with the coherent nonlinear phenomena, while Part II discusses the turbulent nonlinear phenomena. Six chapters comprise Part I, where basic equations and methods are described and discussed. Some of these methods are Vlasov-Maxwell equations and Korteweg-de Vries equation. Part II meanwhile has eight chapters that discuss frameworks and theories for weak plasma turbulence. Specifically, the weak turbulence theory is presented as it is applied to electromagnetic wave-particle interactions, nonlinear wave-wave interactions, and nonlinear wave-particle interactions. This book is a useful reference for students and researchers in the study of classical physics and plasma theory.

Book excerpt: Lectures on Non-linear Plasma Kinetics is an introduction to modern non-linear plasma physics showing how many of the techniques of modern non-linear physics find applications in plasma physics and how, in turn, the results of this research find applications in astrophysics. Emphasis is given to explaining the physics of nonlinear processes and the radical change of cross-sections by collective effects. The author discusses new nonlinear phenomena involving the excitation of coherent nonlinear structures and the dynamics of their random motions in relation to new self-organization processes. He also gives a detailed description of applications of the general theory to various research fields, including the interaction of powerful radiation with matter, controlled thermonuclear research, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compact and well-organized text provides an introduction to plasma physics and shows the interaction of plasmas without any external magnetic fields. It deals with the concepts, processes, and characteristic features associated with plasmas. The interaction of magnetic fields on plasma is purposely excluded in this introductory text to help students grasp the basics first, which makes the understanding of the effects of the magnetic fields easier in the subsequent courses. The book begins with a review of the concepts of kinetic theory of gases, collision phenomena in ionized gases and motion of charged particles. It goes on to give a discussion on the characteristic properties of plasmas and conditions to be satisfied for an ionized gas to show plasma behaviour. In addition, the text covers such topics as transport processes, plasma oscillations, and plasma as a dielectric medium, as a charged fluid, and as a many-body system. Finally, it provides a systematic analysis of important instabilities for an unmagnetized plasma, as well as a discussion on the radiation processes. The organization is systematic and the style lucid, with more physical insight and only relevant mathematics. The text is well illustrated, and the References and Bibliography at the end of the book should stimulate those students who have a desire to study the subject deeper. It is a one-semester text and is designed for the undergraduate, postgraduate and research students of science and engineering who wish to choose plasma physics, astrophysics or space physics as their special areas of study.

Book excerpt: The nonlinear properties of electrostatic waves in a uniform, zero- temperature plasma free from magnetic field is investigated by two independent perturbation procedures. The first of these is the derivative-expansion technique, '' applied to the Lagrangian-variable formalism. The second is a canonical-transformation procedure based on a hamiltonian description. Both procedures lead to the same formula for the dominant (four-wave) interaction process. If the spectrum is one-dimensional, the wave interaction vanishes. In general, the effect of wave interactions may be divided into coherent'' and incoherent'' contributions. The former leads to a frequency displacement that may be characterized by a dispersion relation. This is evaluated for a test wave in a thermally excited plasma and found to be of the standard form.

Book excerpt: A consistent perturbation method for the calcula tion of non-linear effects in plasma oscillations in a one component system without magnetic field, is studied. The unperturbed state is that of a ''cold'' plasma, without thermal particle motion; particle-plasmon interaction appears through non-linearity only. A diagram technique is worked out which facilitates the application of some field theoretic methods. The frequency shift due to non-linearities self-energy effect is calculated in detail. (Author).
