Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freight Classification and Traffic Territories of the United States Every dollar of wasted freight money either by railroads or by shippers, is a dollar of wasted profit. There are two factors which control freight charges: (1) The legal published rate in the tariff, in effect at the time the shipment moves; (2) The reasonableness of the rate, when all transportation, traffic, industrial, commercial and physical conditions are taken into consideration. In order to know the application, reasonableness, and legality of any rate between two points on any given shipment, yon must know what tariff has jurisdiction. A knowledge of the use of tariffs presupposes an understanding of traffic territories, basing points, common points, rate zones, how the rates are based within, to, between, and from the various rate points or territories, which are instrumental in rate construction. The aim of this monograph is not to produce a large mass of printer's ink and paper, but to give an intelligent understanding of the traffic territories and points used in the construction of rates, enabling the practical traffic man to more fully understand the jurisdiction of tariffs. The information, therefore, has been presented in the smallest possible space, realizing that the busy man has no time to wade through hundreds of pages of discussion, which could be summarized in a few paragraphs. You can get very little out of this monograph by casually reading it. You must make a careful study of the technical points presented in connection with the Freight Classification & Traffic Territory Map and be able to answer all of the study questions which you will find in the back of the monograph. If you will do this conscientiously, the information presented here should help you to easily understand and interpret the tariffs. The wrong tariff is often used in connection with a shipment. The following incident shows how a large amount of money was lost for want of a practical knowledge of the jurisdiction and application of tariffs. The president of the Brown Manufacturing Company was seated behind his mahogany roll-top desk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Interstate business, and to a large extent on intrastate business, transportation of freight is con ducted under the rules and ratings of the Western Classification. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freight Rates: Official Classification Territory and Eastern Canada In offering this work to the public, the authors wish to state that it is designed with a view to setting forth the underlying principles and bases employed in constructing rates in the so-called Official Classification Territory. The rates used in the illustrations may be expected to change slightly from time to time, but this will not affect the general worth of the book, since the relationship of points is at all times preserved to some degree. The difficulties attending the preparation of a work in which specific rates are used can well be appreciated by men actually engaged in traffic work. In preparing this treatise, the authors have availed themselves of the published bases for rate construction employed in Central Freight Association, Trunk Line Association, and New England Freight Association territories. In addition thereto, many railway officials and traffic experts have been consulted and information acquired through personal interviews and correspondence. The authors wish to express their appreciation of the assistance received from these sources. The authors are under special obligation to Ralph E. Riley, of the LaSalle Extension University, for the assistance rendered in preparing the maps and diagrams and illustrations; to Asa Colton, of the same institution, who assisted in the preparation of the manuscript and offered many valuable suggestions; and also to Miss C. E. Brant for the assistance she rendered in preparing the manuscript for the printer, and in editing and revising proofs with such care that she corrected many inaccuracies that would otherwise have found their way into the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traffic Glossary In the study of the course in Interstate Commerce and Rail way Traffic, and in daily traffic work, there are used many terms of a very technical nature. These terms may be divided into two general classes: One class consisting of definitions of traffic territories and the other consisting of terms having a special technical meaning, such as basing points. This Glossary has been prepared to provide a ready reference work for those who need a definition of a territorial term or of some term having a technical meaning. Relative to the territorial definitions, it should be remembered that these definitions are subject to change, in order to meet the various changes in traffic requirements. Like freight tar ifis and classifications, the territorial directories and exceptions are supplemented and superseded from time to time, and it is not expected, therefore, that the descriptions given in Section A will be used in place of the publications carrying the informa tion, particularly 'where actual movement of traffic is involved. This Traffic Glossary and the Atlas of Railway Traffic Maps are furnished as reference works to be used throughout the course. Much of the information in both of these publications will not be clear to the beginner, but as familiarity with traf fic matters increases, the value of the Glossary and the Atlas as reference works will be more apparent. An example of the use of this Glossary may serve to illustrate its place in the Interstate Commerce Course. Let us assume that reference is made in the text matter to the term West ern Termini. By referring to page 101 of this Glossary, it will be found that a list of Western Termini points is given. Again, the question may arise as to whether a certain point is in Central Freight Association Territory or in Trunk Line Terri tory. Referring to the definition of each territory, the informa tion can be obtained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freight Rates: Southern Territory The term Southern Territory, as it is used herein, includes that territory lying south of the Ohio and Potomac rivers and east of the Mississippi River. For rate-making purposes this territory is sub-divided into four sections - the Southeastern (which is the largest in point of area, railroad mileage, and volume of traffic), the Mississippi Valley, the Carolina, and the Kentucky Tennessee. This sub-division came about through varia tions in the geographical and competitive conditions, as well as in the separate interests Of the several rail roads serving, respectively, these sections.
