Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... them with the further evolution of the Gymnodinioidae in the more highly specialized Oochlodinium, and in Pouchetia, and Erythropsis. The species of this genus are, most of them, holozoic in nutrition. Four species only possess chromatophores, G. melo sp. nov., G. falcatum sp. nov., G. pusillum (Schilling), and G. foliaceum sp. nov. Of these G. melo and G. foliaceum show undoubted evidences of holozoic nutrition, such as the presence of food masses and vacuoles, products of metabolism, in the cytoplasm. The same conditon holds true in other Gymnodiniidae, as in Amphidinium scisslon, A. corpulentum, Gyrnnodinium agile, G. flavum, and G. herbaceum. Of the remaining species most of them show evidences of holozoic nutrition, such as food balls, oil globules, vacuoles, and refractive granules in the cytoplasm, the accumulated products of metabolism or indications of periodic feeding and digestion. Encystment is probably in many cases due to the ingestion of large food masses and follows upon it, the cyst being formed to meet the needs of the organism for a quiet period for its digestion. As the cyst wall is first formed it closely invests the body, becoming expanded at a later stage with the accumulation of fluid within it by osmosis. In many cases of encysted individuals, those enclosed in apparently newly formed cysts usually show the presence of food bodies as in G. truncatum (pl. 1, fig. 3), while others, in which the cyst has become greatly enlarged, may be entirely free from food bodies, as are individuals just emerging from the cyst. Distribution Gyrodinium, like Gymnodinium, is widely distributed, but is found principally within the warm temperate waters. Two species only have thus far been described from fresh water, G. hyalinum...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil and Living Dinoflagellates presents a detailed account of the cell physiology, morphology, and mode of life of dinoflagellates. This book discusses the development in the research, both on fossil and living dinoflagellates. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of dinoflagellates as the most important producers of luminescence in the oceans, which sometimes cause tropical seas to glow with phosphorescent light. This text then examines the characteristic feature of dinoflagellates to possess two flagella. Other chapters consider the sequence of events during reproduction in the armored dinoflagellate Glenodinium foliaceum based on culture. This book discusses as well the encystment in non-marine dinoflagellates, which occurs in response to the oncoming of adverse environmental conditions. The final chapter deals with the distribution pattern of dinoflagellate cysts in fossil sediments. This book is a valuable resource for marine biologists, zoologist, paleontologists, micropaleontologists, geologists, taxonomists, microscopists, geneticists, and research workers.

Book excerpt: The book begins with a general introduction and a taxonomic description of the dinoflagellates both to acquaint those unfamiliar with this group of organisms and to set the tone for the rest of the volume. It then addresses the following topics: cell biology (cell cortex, nuclear structure, cell cycle and mitosis, sexual reproduction, cysts and unusual inclusions); biochemistry (physiology and biochemistry, blooms and toxins, and biorhythms); and genetics. In addition, a comprehensive chapter on cell culturing provides the reader with an understanding of the growth conditions and requirements of various dinoflagellates and a simple to follow listing of culture media, all expressed in similar units for ease of comparison. The volume closes with a chapter on evolution which evaluates many of the features of dinoflagellates discussed in the text in terms of evolutionary significance. We hope that this treatise will be of use to research workers and students in the area of dinoflagellate biology and in other areas of biology in which dinoflagellates may be used as a model system for studying various biological problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates is the second identification manual created from the literature developed for the Advanced International Phytoplankton Course. This version, enlarged and modified from the earlier literature, deals with the identification of marine diatoms and dinoflagellates. The data and references presented here should allow the researcher to pursue the question of valid species and how they can be verified. This volume comprises three chapters, beginning with an introductory chapter discussing the subject's historical background. The next chapter focuses on marine diatoms, providing an introduction that describes their general characteristics, life cycles, morphology and terminology, and classification. It is followed by a discussion of genera represented in marine plankton, a description of taxa, and methodology. The third and final chapter focuses on dinoflagellates, beginning with an introduction that describes their general characteristics and eukaryotic unicells. The discussion continues with terminology and morphology, identification of species, techniques for preparation of dinoflagellates for identification, common dinoflagellate synonyms, and an index of dinoflagellate taxa. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biology, zoology, and environmental protection.
