Book excerpt: Fred Arbogast is infamously known for his invention the Jitterbug; however, many in the fishing world do not know is that he started making lures at the age of twelve. Born in Akron, Ohio on Brown Street, he grew up in the city, and developed a love of biology and fish early in life. As a teenager, he became a star athlete with his high school football team and entered the workforce during his high school years during summers. In addition to fishing, he had a passion for journalism, making bamboo casting and fly rods in his spare time, and working with taxidermy. As he became an employee of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, he honed skills in the rubber industry. During those years, he worked in different roles which taught him a new trade and gave him skill in molding, development, and rubber manufacturing. These skills combined with his uncanny desire to create his own fishing lures led to many unique ideas outside of work. As he developed lures at home, publicly, Fred Arbogast grew in notoriety in tournament casting. He became a very competitive tournament caster and his experience outpaced his competitors in the 1920s. Because of his inept abilities to cast with accuracy and distance, he became a "World Champion" bait caster. Out of this experience and notoriety in the tournament casting circles, Arbogast started his own fishing tackle company in 1925 at his home in Akron, Ohio. This book uncovers much of the history of his early company and the products he manufactured at his home for many years until in 1932, he moved his business to 313 West North Street. His company, aptly named Fred Arbogast, created some of the most iconic fishing tackle in history. This book provides a guidebook and related history for collectors of Fred Arbogast fishing lures of the metal brands, his Kicker and Tin Liz families of lures. This volume provides insight into Fred Arbogast's early fishing lures and provides knowledge for collectors and those interested in fishing tackle history.

Download or read book Pearl Harbor written by Homer N. Wallin and published by . This book was released on 2001-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearl Harbor will long stand out in mens minds as an example of the results of basic unpreparedness of a peace loving nation, of highly efficient treacherous surprise attack and of the resulting unification of America into a single tidal wave of purpose to victory. Therefore, all will be interested in this unique narrative by Admiral Wallin. The Navy has long needed a succinct account of the salvage operations at Pearl Harbor that miraculously resurrected what appeared to be a forever shattered fleet. Admiral Wallin agreed to undertake the job. He was exactly the right man for it _ in talent, in perception, and in experience. He had served intimately with Admiral Nimitz and with Admiral Halsey in the South Pacific, has commanded three different Navy Yards, and was a highly successful Chief of the Bureau of Ships. On 7 December 1941 the then Captain Wallin was serving at Pearl Harbor. He witnessed the events of that shattering and unifying "Day of Infamy." His mind began to race at high speeds at once on the problems and means of getting the broken fleet back into service for its giant task. Unless the United States regained control of the sea, even greater disaster loomed. Without victory at sea, tyranny soon would surely rule all Asia and Europe. In a matter of time it would surely rule the Americas. Captain Wallin salvaged most of the broken Pearl Harbor fleet that went on to figure prominently in the United States Navys victory. So the account he masterfully tells covers what he masterfully accomplished. The United States owes him an unpayable debt for this high service among many others in his long career.
