I had several times entreated him, but in vain, to make use of his leisure hours at Greisau in noting down some of his rich store of reminiscences. He always objected, in the same words: Everything official that I have had occasion to write, or that is worth remembering, is to be seen in the Archives of the Staff Corps. My personal experiences had better be buried with me. He had a dislike to memoirs in general, which he was at no pains to conceal, saying that they only served to gratify the writer's vanity, and often contributed to distort im portant historical events by the subjective views of an individual, and the intrusion of trivial details. It might easily happen that a particular character which in history stood forth in noble simplicity should be hideously disfigured by the narrative of some per sonal experiences, and the ideal halo which had sur rounded it be destroyed. And highly characteristic of Moltke's magnanimity are the words he once uttered on such an occasion, and which I noted at the time: Whatever is published in a military history is always dressed for effect yet it is a duty of piety and patriot ism never to impair the prestige which identifies the glory of our Army with personages of lofty position. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franco-German War, 1870-71 The great War between France and Germany which is recorded in these pages is properly speaking the starting-point of the period in which we are now living. People are very fond of phrases such as fin de siecle a decadent century or what not. These appear to imply that suddenly when the year 1900 has completed its course we shall find ourselves launched into a fresh era and that all things will become new. There seems little in the past history of the World to justify these assumptions. Looking to the end of the last two previous centuries, we ourselves speak ofthe glorious revolution of 1688 The French take their cycle from I789; our American cousins theirs from 1776. More than a century surely was influenced or took new life from each of these great dates. Each of them affected many'other nations besides those which now specially remember them. So also the Germany which began its career in 1870 is driving a thread through the warp and woof of the World's history that will for many a long year leave its trace on both colour and pattern. So quickly were my few necessaries collected, that by midday I had my railway-pass, my passport, and my military billet and by eight O'clock in the evening I was joined by the two companions ordered by the Minister to accompany me. We travelled by the Anhalt railway, going by Halle, Nordhausen, and Cassel, anxious, by God's help, to reach headquarters as fast as possible. They threw into the city from two to three hundred grenades daily, sufficient to make every place on the left bank of the river 'lively, ' and to drive most of the inhabitants from their houses. The actual material damage was certainly trifling. After the fall of Mezieres. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emperor's Diary: Of the Austro-German War, 1866 and the Franco-German War, 1870-71; To Which Is Added Prince Bismarck's Rejoinder In the third week of September, Europe was startled by the publication of what purported to be extracts from the private Diary of the Emperor Frederick of Germany, written whilst he was yet, Crown Prince, during the stirring times of the Franco-German War. The first impression was one of incredulity, as to the authenticity of the document. But from DEGREEShe candid mind all incredulity vanished on studying the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With an Ambulance During the Franco-German War: Personal Experiences and Adventures With Both Armies, 1870-1871 It was written in 1873, and is simply an em bodiment of a series of notes or jottings, taken during the war in my spare moments, together with the contents of a number of descriptive letters to my friends. They were written solely for them, and nothing was farther from my mind at the time than the idea of publication. Thus, they remained in a recess of my study for nearly a quarter of a century, until a new generation had grown up around me; and doubt less, but for their friendly importunity, there they would have lain until the memory of their author, like the ink in which they were written, had faded to a blank. I would ask my readers to bear in their kindly recollection that the scope of such a work as the following must of necessity be limited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German-French War of 1870 and Its Consequences Upon Future Civilization It being an avowed characteristic of the high order of civilization attained to at this period of the world's history, for man and nations to sympathize with and aid in ameliorating the misfortunes of one another, it is quite natural that, we find the people of the United States not only averse to and regretting all wars, from principle, themselves politically acting upon its high commands, but observe them aggrieved at the war which in turn has devastated France, as affecting one of the most civilized nations by retarding its general progress of prosperity. Truly loyal in their wishes for the maintenance of the Republic in France, and eager in discerning symptoms of a like improvement upon government in other civilized nations, the American people, while pondering over the extraordinary commotion of this war, experience a relief in the contemplation that with the tranquil demise of the venerable Emperor of Germany, the great intellectual union of the German people may signify the unveiling of the bright Goddess of Liberty in Germany, and, resting at her heart, feel its throbbings a mother's love for every child alike. Then, with Great Britain and her colonies simultaneously to follow, there is indeed a fair prospect, at this age, for all mankind to become free! And how unlike the dark periods of history when the Romans failed in the permanency of the Republic through want of universal education, precluding a high state of morality, and were not guided to happiness by experience in the inestimable advantages of an enlightening Christianity. With us the republican versus the monarchical government has stood a centennial test - enough positive proof of not only its rational superiority over all other forms of government, but of its admirable efficiency, de facto, and its indivisibility and feasibility in enlightened ages.
