I had several times entreated him, but in vain, to make use of his leisure hours at Creisau in noting down some of his rich store of reminiscences. He always objected, in the same words Everything official that I have had occasion to write, or that is worth remembering, is to be seen in the Archives of the Staff Corps. My personal experiences had better be buried with me. He had a dislike to memoirs in general, which he was at no pains to conceal, saying that they only served to gratify the writer's vanity, and often contributed to distort im portant historical events by the subjective views of an individual, and the intrusion of trivial details. It might easily happen that a particular character which in history stood forth in noble simplicity should be hideously disfigured by the narrative of some per sonal experiences, and the ideal halo which had sur rounded it be destroyed. And highly characteristic of Moltke's magnanimity are the words he once uttered on such an occasion, and which I noted at the time Whatever is published in a military history is always dressed for effect yet it is a duty of piety and patriot ism never to impair the prestige which identifies the glory of our Army with personages of lofty position. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franco-German War, 1870-71 The great War between France and Germany which is recorded in these pages is properly speaking the startingpoint of the period in which we are now living. People are very fond of phrases such as fin de siecle a decadent century or what not. These appear to imply that suddenly when the year 1900 has completed its course we shall find ourselves launched into a fresh era and that all things will become new. There seems little in the past history of the World to justify these assumptions. Looking to the end of the last two previous centuries, we ourselves speak ofthe glorious revolution of The French take their cycle from I789; our American cousins theirs from 1776. More than a century surely was influenced or took new life from each of these great dates. Each of them affected many'other nations besides those which now specially remember them. So also the Germany which began its career in 1870 is driving a thread through the warp and woof of the World's history that will for many a long year leave its trace on both colour and pattern. But, while keeping this in view, he involun tarily - as was inevitable from his position - con templated the task from his own standpoint as Chief of the General Staff, and arranged events in connection with a' gen?ral scheme which could only be known at head-quarters. Thus this work, which was undertaken in all simplicity of purpose, as a popular history, isfbpractically from beginning to end the expressiofi of a private opinion of the war from the field-marshal himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bismarck in the Franco-German War, 1870-1871, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is almost like the recollection of a dream, when I call up before my mind the circumstances under which, more than eight years ago, I made my first and last tour through France, and ponder on all I was permitted to observe and pass through. No other tour I ever made stands out so clearly and livingly in my memory. This will be readily understood, when I say that my route led from Saarbriicken to Versailles, by way of Sedan, and that I had the honour of passing the seven months it took me to traverse it in the immediate society of the Imperial Chancellor - or, as he was then called, the Chancellor of the Confederation. My visit to France was connected with the campaign of 1870 and 1871, during which time I was attached to the mobilised Foreign Office, which accompanied the first section of the main headquarters of the German army.
